"6 CD" + "British" + "Fatboy Slim" + "Notorious B.I.G." + "cover picture"

David Raposa, Saturday, 29 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Avalanches is not quite a mix album is it? And even still someone needs to get them a fuckin good producer, it's awfully out of sync in places. (nb I still think they're great)

Ronan, Saturday, 29 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The mix I enjoyed most last year was my second-last set at Sussed Mark I. "Mix" here used in its very very loosest sense.

All these records sound really good fun, actually.

Helen - is the Soulwax remix his Skee-Lo one? Because that is marvellous.

Tom, Saturday, 29 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

My favourite is Stacey Pullen's DJ Kicks. Very hard to explain why though. The Jeff Mills mix of course. Honourable mentions: Kemistry & Storm's DJ Kicks and 'Laboratoire Garnier' double whammy. Out-of- competition-because-everyone-rates-it: Coldcut JBDJ.

Omar, Saturday, 29 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Me at the Griffin Sports Club, Dulwich, on 21 December 2001. The twin peaks:

DJ Otzi vs Andrew WK - "Hey Baby, Party Hard." And it worked!

DJ Otzi vs S Club 7 vs Peter Brotzmann Octet - "Doo Wah Diddy, Don't Stop Movin' Your Machine Gun." And it worked!!

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

"Any remembrances of mixes past, where you were there?"

Cut La Roc at the Viper Room a couple years back, climaxing with "Sunshine Underground" cut together with other stuff at the critical juncture.

To address the topic question, seek Prince Paul promotional tape retrospective, "Confessions of a Beat Junkie." Stetasonic + De La Soul + Dr. Octagon + Prince Paul's mom + more = fantastic. Definitely worth hunting

I know it's been overstated by everyone and his dog, but you really can't see past Coldcut - it's the grand unifying force in so-called dance music. This is because 1) every track goes together (and I mean PROPERLY, like they were ALWAYS meant to be part of the same track), 2) it moves forward and progresses without having to necessarily become faster in tempo or more 'up' in mood, 3) there are NO bad records on it - to this day I will buy on sight any tune that figures within it, and 4) it doesn't limit itself to just one style (so lame!)

On a similar note, but with more obvious computer-aided cheating, DJ Hekla (Hrvatski's mate) did a mix only for trade which is similarly broad sweeping in style. You can get it on soulseek, I think. Very nice indeed.

marcia, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Sorry, I forgot to answer your other point- 'Is DJ mixing an art?' I would say that it is, but that, like any other art, it can be done well or badly, and that it is very rarely done well at all. There's a massive DJ culture here in Glasgow, to the point that in a lot of bars there's one playing every night, and they always fail to amaze me. Sure, thousands of people can beat-match records and choose good tunes, but isn't it more about taking the raw materials of seperate records and making them into one, actually synthesising disparite parts into a whole? Or do other people judge good DJing by other criteria? Sorry for ranting...

marcia, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The whole = a set. The experience is in the flow, obv. But most DJs do that to *some* extent or another.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Sometimes a good DJ is somebody who just whacks on good records one after the other. The location of the 'art' in this case shifts from music-making to strictly keeping the party going. From a crowd's point of view I think both are equally cool if done well. Michael T's "Motherfucker" and "Kitsch Inn" parties are a good example of the second kind - hit rock record after hit rock record etc. and the crowd loves it. No one's ever going to release a Motherfucker mix CD, though. It doesn't work as an object in and of itself, which is maybe one definition of art.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Maybe Michael T's stuff works because it goes so FAR in the other direction from seamless mixing. Like "outsider" art.

The greatest DJ mix I ever saw though was Jeff Mills at the Limelight. There was no "song" that anyone recognized (except for those really up on their stuff) because he assembled it all live in front of us... the bass from one turntable, the treble from another, some midrange from a 3rd, all whirling around. It was a brand-new thing, just for us. He was "spinning plates" and at any moment one could fall over. But the way you forgive the plate-spinner if one starts to wobble, what he was creating for us was so extraordinary that the odd fuck-up wasn't a big deal - there was so much else going on! After an hour or two of loops and beats that shifted and pounded into and out of each other, and after bringing in a 909 which he was programming on the fly, sometimes just by itself with no records - basically just beating us senseless but always one step ahead - he blasts out some big vocal house number. Hearing a "song" or recognizable thing in the middle of what he was doing was indescribable. The place went bananas.

His mixes are unique enough objects in their own right to fit most people's def of "art" ("a new thing from raw materials" maybe, def of every word of course extremely subjective) and Mills's mixes at least have already become pretty canonical. (sorry for rant...!)

mark dynamics and mardi buttler live at transition in sydney aaustralia it was very moving stuff

daniel bosci, Sunday, 24 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Fatboy Slim can't mix to save his life, but he's still amazing to see.

Ronan, Sunday, 24 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i would have said the opposite - his music's rubbish, but the Live At The Boutique mix from a few years back is excellent. maybe he just doesn't bother these days

michael, Sunday, 24 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yeah I dunno, Live at the Boutique IS class. But anytime I've seen him he doesn't mix very well. And the music he plays tends to be brilliant. He has better bootlegs than any other DJ I've seen and just a knack of playing the right song at the right time.

2. History of Our World Part One: Breakbeat & Jungle Ultramix by DJ DB--DJ set at history lesson, with irresistible faster-faster- plateau-much faster pacing, covering early 'ardkore into '94 jungle with unbelievable panache.
9. Derrick Carter, About Time--"deep house" means a few different things; all of them are on here.

this is funny because history of our world part ii: the rough + the smooth, and derrick carter's "the cosmic disco" mix for mixmag is on my list

three weeks pass...

i have a nuanced q that's a tad removed from the main plot here, but didn't want to start a new thread-
i'm specifically interested in commercially released continuous/blend/cut-up mixes. stuff like this: https://www.discogs.com/release/163023-DJ-Spinna-Strange-Games-And-Things

-pendantry: a lot of them that i remember are not on streaming, presumably over licensing issues. also i don't mean "artist mixtapes" like the back to mine or late night tales series. i'm interested specifically in mixes where there's some sort of real time manipulation happening-

kind of the progenitor of artist playlist curation? what are your favs? idc about genres. i mostly know hiphop ones, but i found this other one by dj spinna that's a straight up deep house mix. it's really good, too! he has his signature effects + blend style, so even though i knew none of the music, it still had an air of familiar ground. love that.

anyway, this thread is an amazing resource.
