billy joel looks so cool in that! I wonder if he went to see The Dictators back in the day, or something... maybe The Hassle even opened for them!

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 30 January 2004 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

on his foot there, do you think that's wear-and-tear on the album cover or is it salt-stains on his zippered ankle boots? salt stains on rock boots are awesome.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 30 January 2004 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

billy definitely could have hung out with these dudes:

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Saturday, 31 January 2004 07:38 (twenty-two years ago)

You have to use the greater-than/less-than brackets. Like this:

The end result would look like:

Quibble with the Frampton. The yawnsomely literal title for this picture would be something like "Frampton Stares" or "Mouth Agape, With Guitar." It doesn't show him "coming alive," not literally.

Well, maybe if the album was called Crouching manfully next to a Panther maybe.

Listening to the song right now. It's incredible.

jmm, Sunday, 11 January 2026 14:15 (two months ago)

I was once in a band that loved yawnsomely literal etc. We were working on an album to be called Movers and Shakers with the front cover being staged photos of us comically attempting to load furniture into a van. The other side was to be us playing maracas and presumably other shakers.

In a tragic series of events that will astonish exactly no one, the project fizzled and the band went nowhere. But... one can never truly stop wondering what if....

I know! It's like the alt text of album covers :D

clamage, Friday, 23 January 2026 14:36 (two months ago)

Yessss. Most of these are more "amusingly literal" but that one, that is truly yawnsomely literal.

Saw this album cover and thought of this thread:

DJ Haram - Beside Myself

and then thought, surely it didn't take until 2025 for someone to come up with this brilliant idea and sure enough:

Pretty sure if you went to Discogs and typed in "beside myself" you could depress yourself in a hurry.

I'm seeing a "Depress Yourself" cover, with pictures of the band's faces on the keys of a computer keyboard.

Ray Stevens – #1 With A Bullet

His other albums include Have A Little Talk With Myself, Turn Your Radio On, There Is Something On Your Mind and Be Your Own Best Friend, none of them featuring yawnsomely literal album covers. Which seems a missed opportunity.

you're doing that thing again (Matt #2), Thursday, 12 February 2026 21:29 (one month ago)

Oh, he's got some more literal ones.

Who's going to stop 200 balloons? Nobody! (President Keyes), Thursday, 12 February 2026 21:34 (one month ago)

Missing a foam finger for extra literalness there.

Kim Kimberly, Thursday, 12 February 2026 21:37 (one month ago)

He spent the whole budget on the oversized novelty bullet.

Instead of create and send out, it pull back and consume (unperson), Thursday, 12 February 2026 21:44 (one month ago)
