...See, it all started when they all got drunk and my mom called herself the Queen of Denmark, and then they all lezzed up, and the next thing you know...

That is an unforunate story, DB.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 4 November 2002 21:32 (twenty-two years ago) link

That story sounds lame, no doubt, but I bet there was something that led up to it that the folks in the audience didn't know about...I've talked with Angelo and Walt and Nord a couple times, and they're very open-minded and good people to anybody who doesn't refer to them by the "N" word...however, if it was Kendall who said that stuff, as he was a very disturbed individual, it could quite possibly been him just being a paranoid schizo.

nickalicious, Monday, 4 November 2002 21:39 (twenty-two years ago) link

Now, I'll fully admit that I still enjoy bands who have probably done and said far more offensive things, and I've just been fortunate enough to not know about it, or see it before my ears and eyes. It's not that I've been burning Fishbone effigies or anything all this time.. in fact, I kinda want to hear "In Yer Face" now.. (which is my favorite record of theirs). And there were other reasons related, mainly, to my mutating musical tastes that had a lot more to do with it... but that story provided a little extra ooomph in my movin' on out of Fishbone-ness, if you will. And I recently brought up the same story shortly before in a completely different conversation, hence...

That is an unforunate story, DB.

Aww, that's alright, Alex. My mom and the Great Danes are doing just fine, now.

To me Fishbone is one of the saddest tales in the business, for such an influential band to now be playing pubs and shit. Without them there would be no Red Hot Chili Peppars, Primus, or No Doubt. None of those bands are my favorites, but they sold a bunch of fucking records on that California pop/ska/funk angle. But nobody did it better than the Bone on that first album (EP).

And live? fuhgetaboutit.

I haven't heard anything since Psychotic Friends Nuttwerk, but there was some good stuff on that, espec. "The Suffering."

And I will defend Monkey... and Reality..., at least in parts. Truth and Soul is sometimes (often, really) the greatest album in the world.

ten months pass...
I never saw them live but I'll second everything else.

The release of "The Reality of My Surroundings" may be one of my greatest ever musical disappointments... I love melodicism and songcraft, and the band jettisoned them almost entirely. At the time I assumed it was the lack of David Kahne's influence and that bust-up with whoever in the band getting cultified. But maybe it was a more accurate reflection of their live shows.

As bumped by:

C/D: Fishbone

Do they still play "Fat Chicks" live? I remember them doing different versions of it over the years, and thinking they were singing "Fascist" the first time I saw 'em, when they opened for the Beastie Boys circa '87.

Did they invent "U-G-L-Y/you ain't got no alibi/you ugly" or did they swipe that from a schoolyard chant?

chaki, Friday, 13 April 2007 19:57 (seventeen years ago) link

It's heavy-ish (not nearly heavy or metallic enough, given that their new lead guitarist is Rocky George from Suicidal Tendencies. I was really hoping to like it, but I don't, much. I bet they still tear the place down live, though - especially with Rocky in the band now.

scott seward, Friday, 13 April 2007 20:17 (seventeen years ago) link

the new record is good. Classic Fishbone sound and some good anthems. "Jack ass Brigade" "Let Them Hos fight" are right up there with anything on reality of my surroundings.

Personally, I think The Psychotic Friends Nuttwork is right up there with their best records, and its kinda criminal that it died such an unloved death.

They are currently touring decent sized venues and have some festivals booked in australia in europe. Seems the comeback is working. Norwood is a good guy, I wish him the best.

UncleTomfly, Saturday, 14 April 2007 05:49 (seventeen years ago) link

The release of "The Reality of My Surroundings" may be one of my greatest ever musical disappointments...

(Why I am responding to a year-old comment I don't know but) I interviewed the band when this came out and they were on Lollapalooza. I was trying to sum up what I felt was missing in the disc without being blatantly offending and Angelo just sad, "You mean it don't have no mo' 'Crazy Nigger' on it." That's what the band termed... Well, the stuff that made Fishbone great and that album a downer (he says, editorially).

Truth And Soul remains one of my all-time favorite albums. The fact that it got shafted and Garth Brooks got rewarded when SoundScan was introduced made me irrationally hate SoundScan for a long time...

NYCNative, Saturday, 14 April 2007 12:58 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't see why that's an irrational hate.

Oilyrags, Saturday, 14 April 2007 13:02 (seventeen years ago) link

On reality.. those "If I were a...I'd" had the so-called "crazy nigger" on it, but yeah, two of the good songs from the reality.. sessions wound up on that "bonin in the boneyard" maxi single (came out in 91) "hide behind my glasses" is one of my favorite fishbone tracks, and "love and bullshit" is loony as well.

UncleTomfly, Saturday, 14 April 2007 13:34 (seventeen years ago) link

The records never came close to capturing the mayhem that is their live show. That said, "Truth and Soul" and "The Reality of My Surroundings" are great records. I also really like the song "Servitude" off the "Give a Monkey a Brain..." album, and I'm not entirely sure why.

j-rock, Sunday, 15 April 2007 11:31 (seventeen years ago) link

half of 'give a monkey a brain' is great - 'swim', 'drunk skitzo', 'warmth of your breath', 'servitude'...I even have a soft spot for 'black flowers'.

but 'reality' is their crowning glory, with 'babyhead' the only weak spot. 'behaviour control technician' might just be the most intense groove of all time.

quite keen to hear the new album, especially give the rocky george angle.

m the g, Sunday, 15 April 2007 12:09 (seventeen years ago) link

There is a Fishbone show on Archive.org that highlights that energy and mayhem. Live at Entpe, 1989.

None of their albums really capture what made/makes them such an amazing band.

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 15 April 2007 16:04 (seventeen years ago) link

their production is quite horrible.

titchyschneiderMk2, Sunday, 15 April 2007 16:50 (seventeen years ago) link

agreed that they're infinitely better on stage, but...

their production is quite horrible

...is only true of 'monkey', which was seemingly recorded in a shed with mics made of balsa wood. 'reality' sounds incredible - powerful, multi-layered, boisterous and alive. beautiful sounding record.

m the g, Sunday, 15 April 2007 17:09 (seventeen years ago) link

This is ridiculous and sad and might even be the end of Fishbone:

Los Angeles-based alt-rockers Fishbone and their frontman Angelo Moore have been ordered by a Pennsylvania judge to pay nearly USD$1.4 million in damages to a woman who was severely injured during a stage dive which went horribly wrong back in 2010.

THR reports the incident took place on 23rd February, 2010, at a performance by the band at Philadelphia’s World Live Cafe. 46-year-old Kimberly Myers was transported to hospital after being knocked to the ground and fracturing her skull when Moore dove into the crowd.

Myers, who has reported various lingering medical symptoms since the incident, claimed that her immediate medical bills came to USD$15,846. She also estimated that her future medical costs would run up to USD$351,299. Judge DuBois awarded Myers compensatory damages for both amounts.

The judge also said that Myers was entitled to non-economic damages for future pain and suffering, any possible embarrassment, humiliation, and loss of the ability to enjoy the pleasures of life and disfigurement. This decision added another USD$750,000 to the tab.

Finally, Judge DuBois said punitive damages should be assessed solely against the band’s lead singer, noting Moore’s refusal to answer questions relating to his drug use and his acknowledgement of the risks stage diving posed to audience members. “Further, Moore exhibits little remorse or impetus to change his conduct,” the judge said, adding another USD$250,000 to the bill.

The decision in awarding these damages to Myers was also partially informed by Moore’s previous testimony in the original 2010 lawsuit. The judge in that case noted the fact that Moore and Fishbone had been stage diving into crowds since the 1980s, and even continued to do it after Myers’ 2010 incident.

The future of Moore and Fishbone, who have now released seven studio albums after rising to prominence in the 1980s, is unknown at this stage.

& loved the keyboardists songs as reworked by jeff Huckley. Thought that song was one of the best things i heard Jeff Buckley play live and thunk it was a song written about his estranged dad. Until I heard it was actually mainly written by Chris the keyboardist with this bunch.

frogbs, Wednesday, 21 September 2022 04:22 (two years ago) link

They were fantast9c love at the turn of the 90s. Used to do 2 hour + shows that remained energetic throughout.
Fantastic musicians.
I remember following Rollins Band a the same time and seeing their tour itineraries where Fishbone had a printed one complete with setlists before the show and managed to make the versions differ heavily between shows whereas Rollins had a handwritten one but at least appeared to say exactly the same thing at exactly the same point each night. Not sure how much versions of songs varied night to night but it was pretty intense so worth seeing.

Haven't checked them out much since so not sure if lineup has changed massively. I think the last time I was really hearing about them the guitarist had joined a christian cult or had a christian cult he had been involved with interfering with him. That and the keyboard player having co written a song Jeff Buckley did which sounded extremely personal to him and his relationship with his dad.
