what about deerhoof? i didn't even know they were still around but they played a pretty big place around here last year and i think it even sold out. maybe that's just around here though.

yeah a lot of mainstream rock radio staples kinda sorta qualify for this thread (Incubus, Weezer, Foo Fighters) but Papa Roach is probably the best example because they seem like such a one hit wonder but the last few years you can hear one of their new songs on those stations every hour on the hour

1) have an identifiable, instantly familiar sound
2) stick with it through thick and thin, even in the midst of experimentation
3) write catchy, comfortable tunes
4) have no contempt for sentiment or easy appeal
5) have no vested interest in staying current
6) avoid confrontation and shock
7) connect with an at least moderately affluent audience that can raise kids & grow old with you

Blues Traveler weren't incidental, they started HORDE and headlined it for several years! they still, like, play Red Rocks, but i think their hardcore fanbase is kind of negligible, their last album (which features a SPOKEN WORD INTERLUDE BY BRUCE WILLIS apparently) didn't even chart.
