Jody, you wouldn't dare.

I was originally going to say too bad I can't post an image *inside* the gatefold of A Star is Born, but a quick search turned it up.

My music teacher in grade school made us all watch Yentl in 5th grade. I didn't realize till much later that that our teacher was such a homo.

DUD. Best line on Streisand ever: I was talking with a fairly well-known NY cabaret singer and said I didn't understand what anyone saw in Streisand. To which she replied, "Oh, she's awful. She sounds like a vacuum cleaner."

okay dammit I've talked before about the absolute rooling brilliance of the ButterFly album -- she covers Bowie's "Life on Mars?", fer godssake!!! -- but the cover just shows a fly on a stick of butter. Can anyone locate and post the illustration from the back cover, which is a mad psychedelic Streisand-turning-into-a-butterfly sort of illustration?

oh and on the inside foldout she's lookin' braless and hott.

Her first 2 LPs are classics in the genre of unrestrained (nearly giddy) girl-singer enthusiasm and are right up there with "She's So Unusual" or Madonna's debut. And the cover of her second was my contribution to the "Truly Sexy Album Cover" thread!

Then sbe turned 21, and got kinda boring...

one year passes...
TWO CLASSICS FROM LADY S:

(1) Stoney End (1971) - surprisingly rich country (pedal steel) / soul (horns) / pop (tunes) set, much of it fantastic - check out Harry Nilsson's "Maybe", Randy Newman's "I'l Be Home", Carole King's "No Easy Way Down", plus Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot, Laura Nyro, Kurt Weill etc. Nice cover too.

(2) What's Up Doc? (1972) - Bogdanovich's screwball homage, still very much underrated - both Streisand and Ryan O'Neal (et al) very lovable and very funny.

Rest dud, natch.

C/D: Barbra Streisand Broadway Covers;

I'll start.
"As If We Never Said Goodbye" - Classic
"Music of the Night" - Dud
"Being Alive" - 50% Dud, then 50% Classic
"Something's Coming" - Dud
"Send In the Clowns" - Classic

Seems I like her much more when she's doing those soaring show-stoppers, and I don't really like her covers of originally male-sung tunes (like "Lady Luck" and "Some Enchanted Evening"). I would love to hear her do a cover of "The Miller's Son" which I bet would be even better than "Send In the Clowns."

Yes I've read all the way up to 1969 so far.

So far I've learned a lot about which colors Barbra likes and which she dislikes.

LIKES:

burgundy
off white
black
dusty rose
navy blue

DISLIKES:

royal blue
turquoise
orange
red (won't wear it bc it only looks good on dark-haired people)

Josefa, Monday, 13 November 2023 15:22 (one year ago) link

From ‘Yentl’ to ‘Prince of Tides’ her book is rough going. After that it’s unreadable. I feel as if I’ve learned a lot about her, but not necessarily what she intended to convey.

jaymc, Wednesday, 29 November 2023 14:49 (eleven months ago) link

Yeah she would never relinquish control of something like that. This is one of the themes that the book hammers into the ground.

I’ve seen a handful of those As Read By The Author audiobooks, not sure it’s always a wise choice.

this is honestly very impressive, I wonder how many days they tracked. doing an audiobook is very fucking tiring; you every time you say a word weird or skip a definite object or whatever you start that over, I guess in her cased the engineer just grabs it all and puts it back together instead of stopping, dragging back & punching (which saves a little time) -- but seriously, it takes a week to do 200+ pages, it's WORK.

Live at the Bon Soir is amazing. It's a shame they didn't have the noise reduction technology in 1962 to clean up the recording and make this her debut album. I know her actual debut won the Grammy for Best Album, but this live collection is better. The ease and relaxed humor she has at age 20 in front of what was purportedly a sophisticated crowd is almost uncanny.

My two cents:

Get Live at the Bon Soir instead of her actual debut album.
My Name is Barbra and Color Me Barbra are great examples of her classic style.
Stoney End is perhaps the most successful of her "contemporary" albums.

Barbra Streisand... and other musical instruments is her most bizarre album.
