http://www.hartzine.com/blog/acute-records-maison-de-reeditions-post-punk

This is not up for download yet, only streaming. I'll post it soon. And it's not dance music. Just another somewhat eclectic post-punky type mix that will make it even more unlikely that anyone will ever book me for a night of hi-nrg, despite that being my true dream.

2. Locust – I Become Overwhelmed
3. Design for Living – Red Ribbon Day
4. It’s Immagerial – A Gigantic Raft (in the Philippines)
5. The Raincoats – Balloon
6. Family Fodder – Silence
7. Disco Inferno – New Clothes for the New World
8. Pram – Dancing on a Star
9. Broadcast – DDL
10. AA – Society Stinks
11. Home & Garden – (please) Fix My Horn (my brakes don’t work)

> It’s Immagerial – A Gigantic Raft (in the Philippines)

spelling! i like this. they are only really known for Driving Away From Home but this is much better. White Man's Hut is the other, which i don't think i've heard since then.

that entire mix looks right up my street.

koogs, Thursday, 27 October 2011 20:41 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah already told them about that. I only knew driving until recently when I started checking out the early stuff. This and white man's hut and a few other b-sides are all really awesome. Surprised they're not as well known by post-punk fan types.

dan selzer, Thursday, 27 October 2011 20:53 (thirteen years ago) link

(the sea shanty b-side to Gigantic Raft is great too)

koogs, Thursday, 27 October 2011 21:16 (thirteen years ago) link

No Place for a Prompter? The follow-up single Imitate the Worm/The Worm Turns is more of sea shanty?

I've been looking into seeing who may have the rights to this stuff. It looks like at some point they signed to a label owned by Warner Bros, which means I probably wouldn't bother. But the first single, Young Man, is fun, the next three, A Gigantic Raft, Imitate the Worm and White Man's Hut are all amazing. Then the Fish Waltz EP and Life's Hard LP which are a bit more adult contemporary (in a good, arty way), but I think probably owned by Warners. A comp of all that stuff would be great. Or an LP of the singles and EP.

dan selzer, Friday, 28 October 2011 05:44 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh yeah, you can download the mix here:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3848975/New%20Clothes%20for%20the%20New%20World.mp3

dan selzer, Friday, 28 October 2011 05:44 (thirteen years ago) link

i haven't heard half that it's immaterial material. i just have gigantic raft 12" and remember white man's hut from janice long's radio show. am listening to it now but i'm not sure it's as good as i remember it. but there can't be many songs that mention wattle and daub...

the sea shanty is The Mermaid which is on later copies of Gigantic Raft ('84 rather than the original '81 or '82) release.

SOUNDCLOUD

Made this on Audacity over the last 5 days: It's the first time I've ever done such an ambitious mix (in terms of mixing - it's almost all 3 track transitions, often for an entire track's length, and fits 19 tracks in 55 minutes), I hope it's tight enough, cause I tried to fit in as much ooomph as possible.

FUXA - WITNESS TO NATURAL INVENTION (you can skip this, I added it 'cause soundcloud blocks uploads starting with the orb)
THE ORB - INTO THE FOURTH DIMENSION
OUTKAST - HVMBLE MVMBLE
AUTECHRE - CLIPPER
INSTRA:MENTAL - WATERFALLS
SHED - ITHAW
NO SMOKE - KORO KORO
VELVET HAMMER - PARTY DOWN (THE REVENGE EDIT)
K-S.H.E. - CROSSTOWN
MOVE D & BENJAMIN BRUNN - LOVE THE ONE YOU'RE WITH
EDDIE C - DEEPA
PLASTIKMAN - MARBLES

LVKE HESS - KRATOS
PLAID - REISHI

The first is picking up on all the techno influences that have been percolating through the uk this year and connects some dots with berlin and detroit:

Ha i just came in from playing this on my commute on way home and came straight online to look for tracklisting

Liked the first part Thought the Owen Jay track clashed with the previous one (tho i like the track a lot)...then after the Owen Jay when it stepped up, thought it was super good, the 4-5 tracks after that will buy them all

Cashmere Combabe, Friday, 13 January 2012 19:13 (twelve years ago) link

Cool, Glad you liked it!

See what you mean about that clashing mix, trying to walk the line between super planned out perfect matches and a more improvisatory live selection...

Love your last one too, gonna have to track down some of that as well.
think we share similar esthetics of house!
That jump rope track that you opened with in particular is kind of magical.
Think i heard it before on a Move D mix and it didnt grab me at first, but it really grew on me.
also "Build Her" is Great.

dsb, Friday, 13 January 2012 20:53 (twelve years ago) link

I'm gonna give your mix a go too dsb it looks pretty sweet. I've been playing Linkwood, Omar S, Floating Points and Juniper quite a bit recently.

Yep definitely similar aesthetics! I like this kind of mix because some of the things which don't come to the fore immediately end up coming to the fore later on

Move D was also where i first heard jump rope, he played it on the sunday afternoon at Free Rotation

all bomb tracks ... something about the track selection makes me think you'd enjoy this?

the late great, Saturday, 14 January 2012 18:18 (twelve years ago) link

i posted this on sandbox, got roundly ignored ... anyway, here goes again

always appreciate feedback on my "technique" - i'm just a bedroom hobbyist, no aspirations to play out btw, at least not for anybody but friends - and selection and the one time someone sat down (on two different occasions) to give my stuff a listen i feel like i improved massively after that so anybody who does, pre-emptive gracias (and thanks again EDB if you're out there)

it's pretty much what we're all spinning these days, skippy skippy techy housey stuff and post-dubstep w/ lots of novelty classics in there too, slapped together as fast as i could manage "live" w/ traktor + controller ... though it's not in one take, i don't know how many times i fucked around with this until i was happy - at least 50 takes, if not 100

the weeknd
harddrive - deep inside (pearson sound remix)
didz & chico - something new
littlefoot - sell my soul (dj dom remix)
distal - android tourism
christophe - the force
novelty rap track, gotta listen if you want to know what ... did better than derrick carter w/ it, IMO *polishes own knob*
distal - boss of the south (sinden remix)
mumbai science - lotus
classic novelty german microhouse-cum-italo track
la konk fiesta the gomma version
crookers & kid cudi - embrace the martian (seiji acid remix)
secret british house white label
zomby - labyrinth
tin man - love sex acid (falling in love acid)
post-dubstep anthem
novelty detroit techno blend
surkin - ultra light
rustie - cry flames
untold - i can't stop this feeling (pangaea remix)
sepalcure - love pressure (lando kal remix)
cessa - recon (sbtrkt remix)
surkin - never let go

I totaly forgot I had that Shoebox 12" you've got in your mix. It's well nice big up on the reminder. If you're into that deep house/slow vibe you might dig a few of my mixes on that best of 2011 xpldr mix link. The first one and fourth one are both slow burning 110-130-ish bpm sessions.

b12 is such an all time fave. They're even on the Crazy Rhythms mix for those who remember that.

Xpost: Thanks!

That B12 track is absolutely "all-time."

This is what happens when, instead of scrambling to find a mix's worth of new material, you just go through your music collection and pick out your favourite tracks.
