Not pop stars per se, but Siobhan Duffy from Gunga Din and the girl from Solex are both quite easy on the eyes.

Kate Bush and Debbie Harry.

Duran Duran's John Taylor he was just beautiful!! Scott Baio was when I knew I had hormones!!

After I got over my "fancying cartoons stage" (my boyfriend might say I never got over it, the way I go on about Shaggy off Scooby Doo and Jason off G Force) my first serious crush was Bobby Gillespie, at the time wearing implausibly tight leather trousers in the Jesus and Mary Chain.

Pwhoooaaaarrrr!!! etc.

We've been over this a thousand times.

kate the saint, Friday, 27 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I hope I never have to go over Bobby Gillespie a thousand times.

perhaps if you involve a large tractor of some sort

ethan, Sunday, 29 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I don't know. Tractors aren't as heavy as you might think - and the pressure is reduced by the large tyre surface. I'm sure quite a lot of people survive being run over by a tractor. Maybe if you attached big fuck-off spikes it might be OK.

tony mortimer essential quotes

"I'm really feminine. You have to be to write songs. Sometimes I catch my hands doing wonderful things and I think 'Oh God! Very feminine', but it doesn't bother me."

minna (minna), Friday, 6 December 2002 06:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well, he is a Libran.

Damian (Damian), Friday, 6 December 2002 09:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

My answer - probably someone like Debbie Gibson...even at that age I was divorcing looks from musical quality, but I suppose Electric Youth was tolerable once.

Damian (Damian), Friday, 6 December 2002 09:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

It pains me to admit it but probably Roger Taylor from Duran Duran. Although if i'm being revisionist about it i'd probably say John Taylor. Morten Harket arrived about the same time as puberty, i feel slightly unnerved whenever i see him today.

leigh (leigh), Friday, 6 December 2002 12:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

I was ten years old and I had just seen Belinda Carlisle for the first time. And here was this woman unlike any other woman I had ever seen. It was then I realized that women were for me. It wasn?t until I was seventeen that women realized I was for them?.

geeta (geeta), Friday, 6 December 2002 13:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

Marc Almond, Siouxsie Sioux. I was 11 or so. But they both sort of scared me so I settled for Adam Ant and John Taylor. Now I could just wish I had picked Nick Rhodes; he is still utterly swoonworthy.

Zora (Zora), Friday, 6 December 2002 13:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

Bernadette Peters maybe, back in 6th or 7th grade. I'm not really big on pop star crushes.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 6 December 2002 14:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

Dee Snider gave me the heebies when i was about 9 or 10 after seeing Twisted Sister on Razzmatazz, he still scares the life out of me.

leigh (leigh), Friday, 6 December 2002 14:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

wow, i was surprised to see other refs to nick rhodes. i'm a bit ashamed of having had a crush on him. simon le bon came second. i was waaay too obsessed with duran duran. with age, i came to my senses.

I dunno, probably Annabella Lu-win from Bow Wow Wow. I was very young though, and not quite a crush (and certainly not "starlust"!), but there were certainly stirrings. Also Clare Grogan, Madonna and Kate Bush, I think. The usual. More fascinated by the girls at school in my early teens though, to be honest. Much more.

Ah, to be 11 and not quite sure which Spice Girl to fancy (I eventually settled on Posh Spice, which was a terrible mistake in hindsight)

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 7 December 2002 23:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

I was obsessed with many pop stars, but never really fancied as far as wanted to date or sleep with or something. I guess this is kind of weird.

I didn't watch a lot of MTV, or any at all until I was about 11, so as a kid I just kind of imagined what my favorite rockstars looked like while listening to the radio. I associated the image of Vanna White with any female singer and for quite a long time I just assumed all bands that were not Metal looked like Mr. Mister. Then somehow I was exposed to 'Walk Like An Egyptian' and have been sweaty for Michael Steele (and brown-eyed female bassists in general) ever since.

Tom Millar (Millar), Sunday, 8 December 2002 02:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

I never really fancied any pop stars until I saw the hope sandoval/JMC video. I've fancied hope ever since.

three years pass...
Agnetha, the blonde from Abba. For many people the queen of 1970s pop. I've been hooked since I was about 17. Sure, dark-haired Frida was pretty hot too (I certainly wouldn't have declined the chance of a date), and had an excellent voice. But why did guys then, and even now, go on so about the blonde? Why do I gaze longest at her? I think she certainly had the edge as far as looks were concerned. What man isn't driven at least a bit wild by thick, long, blonde hair? She was the youngest, too - still only 26 in 1976, arguably Abba's most popular and visible year of all, when the other band members were already into their 30s. And her body...you don't win awards for your rear for nothing!

Stevie Nicks, hands down.

I have to give a third nomination to Deborah Harry. I think I was around 12 or so when Heart of Glass came out, and man! That voice of hers was all I needed...

Come to think of it, I think Ann-Margret, or should I say Ann-Margrock got me when she "appeared" on the Flintstones well before Deborah Harry gave me wood.

Justin Timberlake...NSYNC was HUGE when I was in middle school. I remember borrowing my friend's copy of their debut album, putting it in my computer and watching the video for "Tearin' Up My Heart" 100000000000000 times. Especially the part where he goes "I'm goin' crazy without you" and does this poppin' thing and it totally blew my mind. Oh, and the video for Bye Bye Bye where he jumps from the sky and lands and the music stops and he kind of laughs and then it starts again and OMG SQUEE. The only other boy-bander who came close was Nick Carter, but psssh. It was a big deal at my school, the whole BSB v. NSYNC thing. Memories.

Susan Dey as Laurie Partridge. I still lose it for girls w/high cheekbones+long straight hair + big eyes+ full lips.

Debbie Harry.

+ many many 70's (when I was a little one) Spanish pop star ladies whose names I can't recall at the moment but Bless You All.

I had to double-check Leigh's post up there to make sure I didn't write it myself, so yeah, Roger Taylor (but I often kid myself on it was John Taylor so I don't look like I had such rotten taste). But really, Morten Harket was the first real proper freaky obsessive one.
