After accidentally making a mix that spanned hip-hop to house to bass, I deliberately made another:
PARTY IN A CAN

Great mix! I have a lot of catching up to do on this thread, a lot of interesting looking mixes have been posted lately ...

NoTimeBeforeTime, Saturday, 10 March 2012 13:07 (twelve years ago) link

Here's something recent I made ... mostly older stuff that I was listening to in the 90's:

"Gullible souls have noticed a correspondence in shape between certain mixes" - 52 minutes

Serge Gainsbourg f. Charlotte Gainsbourg - Lemon Incest (Philips)
Pet Shop Boys - A Man Could Get Arrested (12" Mix) (Parlophone)
Orphx - Autogestion (Hands Productions)
Offset - Aims of Me (New Electronica/Spacehopper Records)
Underworld - Spoon Deep (Junior Boys Own)
Green Velvet - Abduction (F-111 Records)
Romance - Throwing Caution to the Wind (Invisible/Noise Museum)
The Orb - Earth (Gaia) (Big Life)
Woob - On Earth (em:t)
Fennesz - Instrument 4 (Touch/Mego)

Hi, DJ's. I have a beginner question here. When a DJ cuts off the bass and then brings it back up to get a reaction, what effect do they use? Or do they simply cut the low EQ? Thanks.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Sunday, 11 March 2012 04:07 (twelve years ago) link

They just use the eq usually. Sometimes there's a separate isolator. The latest pioneer gives you the option of having the EQ be a standard eq which turns the bass down. Or an isolator that kills it completely.

The other way is to use a filter which has only recently become common on mixers. I think that gets tired really quick but I generally hate resonant filter sweeps. Especially when applied to disco loops by French people.

dan selzer, Sunday, 11 March 2012 04:20 (twelve years ago) link

why do dj's rarely use that trick in a mix?

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Sunday, 11 March 2012 05:10 (twelve years ago) link

personally, I think a lot of those tricks can be really trite and while effective on a packed dancefloor, sound silly when listening to a mix for non-dancing purposes.

dan selzer, Sunday, 11 March 2012 05:48 (twelve years ago) link

ok, thanks dan :) I'm having my first "performance" tonight with a laptop (probably no one will watch anyway since it's a cafe) and maybe I will post the set here.

hey late great, that mix is great. love the "flash" remix. i would have liked to hear "hardbells" play out a little longer before getting mixed out... i mean we've JUST had the big signposted bass drop, let us enjoy the moment a little bit. that's my only critique!

It's no Prisoneer mix, but I made a "highlights from the last 6 months of record acquisitions" mix, which I think is really good cause I've been fortunate to be getting loads of good acquisitions. Anyways, its pretty spring-timey and I think all around swell.

welcome back prisoneer!

jimi what tempo are your mixes at 135? 130?

do dudes like ben UFO play w/ the tempo in sets or do they tend to keep it all at one tempo for the whole set?

the late great, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 16:41 (twelve years ago) link

love the waveforms on Prisoneer's sets :D

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 16:46 (twelve years ago) link

I don't really stick to a tempo as such I just nudge it up or down a little at a time depending on the tracks. The last one started at around 126-ish dips to around 120 by the time the DJ Sotofett track comes in and I nudge it up again to around 130-ish by the end. Wasn't much of a jump that one, I've done sets that start around 110 and end on 140 or even 160 before or the other way around. I don't have a bpm counter so I'm just guessing really, but the tempos are prob about right. I only have technics and a mixer.

Mine start slow and speed up

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 20:27 (twelve years ago) link

i'm just starting out with this but mine are allll over the place (usually have ~3 song clusters with close tempos or feels). not trying to make dance mixes though.

40oz of tears (Jordan), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 20:31 (twelve years ago) link

my last one starts at 160, drops to about 125, then creeps up to 140. each one is a bit different tho.

if you feeling frogbs, leap (The Reverend), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 20:34 (twelve years ago) link

i'm asking because i really enjoy this mixed-up bass, breaks + 4/4 sound and it doesn't sound like dudes who do it well (pearson sound, ben ufo, etc) really mess a whole lot w/ the tempo but i'm also not standing there keeping track. also for whatever reason they rarely sound as fast 135-140 zone i'm pretty sure they stick in.

personally i *hate* playing with the tempo, mainly because i can never figure out where/when to nudge it up or down in a way that doesn't make the pitch sound funny.

the late great, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 20:38 (twelve years ago) link

pearson changes the tempo quite a bit iirc?

if you feeling frogbs, leap (The Reverend), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 20:49 (twelve years ago) link

at the very least, the bpms of his productions are all over the place. i saw an interviewer ask him about this and he said he that if he's playing a long set, he likes to break it down into sections of different tempos.

if you feeling frogbs, leap (The Reverend), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 20:51 (twelve years ago) link

yeah one thing i've noticed about pearson sound sets is he's not afraid to completely drop the beat out for a little while (thinking of his sicko cell remix among other things) so maybe that's when he switches it up

the late great, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 20:54 (twelve years ago) link

Heh, two of my last mixes went from 95/100 to 135.

That said, sets that move from mid 125ish techno/house to 135-140ish bass music in 2 or so hours are, done well, like, the best thing ever (throw in an extra hour to start off with slo mo house and that's even better).
