I use a PC and there's no volume meter on the software I use. I'm saving to buy a controller though. Want to get proper.

not saying that mixing with a controller is "proper" but it's a first step

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Friday, 20 April 2012 07:11 (twelve years ago) link

o_O

that seems like some basic level of functionality shit

hologram ned raggett (The Reverend), Friday, 20 April 2012 07:20 (twelve years ago) link

I'm about to buy a controller, primarily so I can easily record mixes at home...maybe I'll take it to gigs w/ my laptop but I'm still wary of bringing a laptop because I don't want to lose my cred.

Actually because it's expensive and I can't imagine it not getting destroyed.

I'm looking at the Novation Twitch, I played with it at Guitar Center and am not sure I can get used to using the touch strip in place of the platters. I don't scratch or anything, I'm just so accustomed to setting my cue poing and adjusting pitch that way.

If I decide I need platters there's the Traktor Kontrol S2, but I think I'm leaning towards Serato/Itch over Traktor.

There's also the Vestax VCI-300 mk II and VCI-100 mk II. Used, the price isn't so bad. Twitch I've seen loval for as low as 340.

Or I may hold out for the VCI-380 which is $$$ and not out yet, but is basically a VCI-300 with a Twitch attached to it PLUS it's a real mixer so I can connect my 1200s to it.

dan selzer, Friday, 20 April 2012 07:27 (twelve years ago) link

but it will indeed make you lose your cred.

jk.

I have a $125 bcd3000 that I've been using to play gigs for ~4 years. Nothing fancy but it gets the job done.

Yes, we've all been waiting for mixes from someone who's clearly posting here for the first time in order to just spam message boards.

EDB, Saturday, 21 April 2012 17:51 (twelve years ago) link

As far as mixes you don't want go, I've spent the last week piecing this together in an attempt (whether successful or not I do not know) to make a really tight, many-tracked mix of generally decent tracks.

fauxmarc do you actually put together mixes with it? i use it for chopping and editing speech and putting together radio packages, which it really excels at. i see it as like an audacity that actually works, a replacement for Deck II (oldies will get the reference) or similar.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 22 April 2012 15:48 (twelve years ago) link

I can't remember if I've posted this before, but I really like this mix. It's all vinyl, one take, recorded directly to minidisc. (minidisc!) It was one of those mixes that I made and forgot about, and surprisingly when I rediscovered it I found it was really good. Here it is, the long lost Tracer Hand mix which I'm calling Human Made.

Wanna talk oldies? When Deck was introduced, I recognized the original version as an update on the mid-priced MIDI sequencer I used to run on my Mac Plus...Dr. T's Beyond.

Really nice looking mix, EDB.

Tracer, for those of us slightly overwhelmed by how many options/etc Reaper presents, any guides/etc to lead us through the zone?

tracklist looks sick, jimi. gonna listen to it now

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Monday, 23 April 2012 11:58 (twelve years ago) link

@etc - there's a PDF user guide on the Reaper site which gets you up to speed. If you've ever used Audacity, Protools, etc you'll find it familiar. If not that's almost helpful because you won't have to relearn your own hardcoded muscle-memory keyboard shortcuts, etc.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Monday, 23 April 2012 12:23 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i put together mixes with it if i'm feeling pressed for time on other projects (which is all the time lately of course) - it's great for chopping and editing but with a simple holding of the alt-button (in windows) the same tool is a great time stretcher you can use for arbitrary stretching or to snap to whichever interval of a bar.

i haven't really used any guides and don't know anything about music but i just play around and always end up learning a bit more about it as i go along. love that visually on the track you can also see/modify whichever fx parameter or panning/volume envelope, as well as assign them to an arbitrary midi controls, record the controlling in real-time, etc.

it's really good about multi-channel handling/mapping as well, like i can have 16 channels from maschine be a different sound/instrument/sample each mapped and recorded to it's own track in reaper

Just bought a controller. Any concerns about controller and software making mixes too slick is easy to take care of. Just don't use auto sync. There you go, sloppy and "live" as before! (haven't quite gotten the handle on how this thing uses beat grids and syncs correctly.

dsb thanks for putting it up in AIFF!

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 2 May 2012 19:55 (twelve years ago) link

I got a Novation Twitch, which is an Itch controller.

Pros:
Cheap
Small
Light
Many pads for cues and "slice" effect I will use twice

Cons:
People say the output volume is too low, which is only a problem if you're at a shitty club where everything is totally maxed out and you go on after someone with a hotter level CDJ
No platters

Basically, I wanted something for home use and occasional mobile type thing. I probably won't use this in clubs/bars. Maybe sometimes.

I never really used the platters for scratching, just more intuitive scratch cue-ing, and this thing with the touch strip basically accomplishes the same thing. And I think one of the reasons it's so relatively cheap is because there's no platter, which, to do well, probably costs a bit. And when done poorly, you may as well not even have them.

If I get really into using controllers, I'll probably replace this with the Vestax VCI-380 that comes out in a few weeks, which is basically this, PLUS two good platters, PLUS the ability to act as an independent mixer. So that's like 1000 dollars, whereas I got this for $350 from some guy on craigslist who had it for 2 weeks.

So I can see selling this and my Rane mixer and getting the Vestax eventually, but for now, this is great. Great for sitting at my computer and recording mixes. And I'm djing a friend's bday party in a few weeks so not having to lug turntables and many crates of records, especially when you don't know what people are going to want to hear, this set-up should be cool.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 3 May 2012 07:54 (twelve years ago) link

when a dj cuts out the bass, what effect do they generally use? or do they just kill the low EQ (or whatever you call the knob with the word "low")?

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Saturday, 5 May 2012 14:05 (twelve years ago) link

They usually just kill the low EQ. There's more possibilites. Sometimes it's using a high pass filter. Some mixers have "kill" switches on each band of EQ. The latest/greatest pioneer has a switch so you can define if the EQ's lower the level of that band or cut it out altogether. And old-school house style and big systems often have a separate "isolater" with is like a master EQ for the crossover that can be used.

But usually they just kill the low EQ.

dan selzer, Saturday, 5 May 2012 17:19 (twelve years ago) link

I tried killing the low eq on my software and it sounds like crap. Using filter sounds so much better. Must be the software, yes?

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Saturday, 5 May 2012 23:35 (twelve years ago) link

could be a virus

the late great, Sunday, 6 May 2012 00:04 (twelve years ago) link
