I think I like They Came in peace, Cantamilla and Mya Yadana equally. They were freely spread amongst many CD compilations of the time. Excursions in Ambience had Mya Yadana, , California Dreaming had Cantimilla and the first Headz had They Came in Peace.

first heard "they came in peace" on this ain't trip hop? and later on headz, which took a little bit for me to get ahold of at the time. i kinda stumbled on to "royalties overdue" in san diego but never could find any other mo'wax stuff until i went to berkeley.

I'm a super nostalgic person and it warms my heart to remember, vividly, the moments when "ambient techno" such as Excursions in Ambience, or a bit later Headz/Trip Hop were truly the most exciting and cutting edge things I knew of!

Belated best of 2011 mix that I ended up chucking some older stuff on. First half instrumental and trippy, second half more songs. It came out alright but I fluffed the very first transition a bit.

As people are talking about how they do mixes, I use Ableton Live , with a third audio channel for a (cheap KAM) turntable, although I just digitise vinyl first if the track is hard to mix! I have it set on repitch, and the launch quantise set to none, and I try to only have a few warp markers at the mixing in and out points, so hopefully things sound OK (the occasional shitty mp3 nothwithstanding). I only have the intro version, which means you don't get the "complex" warp function, without which it basically sounds horrible unless you do it that way.

how did the twitch work out
― puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Monday, 28 May 2012 00:46 (twelve years ago) link
Super mixed feelings...but also "you get what you pay for", and I did my research so there were no surprises.
One huge glowing problem is some sort of bug, apparently confusion/conflict with the automatic graphics card switching and/or sleep functions of my macbook pro, where it'll be working when I tested it out, then I put my computer to sleep for a while, then after I woke it up it worked for a few minutes then the buttons stopped working and I had to unplug the USB and plug it back in. After that it worked flawlessly for 3+ hours or whatever, so no complaints, just have to be careful.
The main "issue" everyone has with the twitch is that since it's not powered and Novation claims to have focused on sound "quality" over power, it is quiet. Not a problem since I was the only one at the party and controlled the trim on the mixer it was going into that fed the PA, but I understand the issue if someone takes it to a gig where the the DJ before you is playing a CDJ or serato and the trims and and faders are all at 100% because the masters aren't high enough and the limiters are kicked in. In that case, there's no way the Twitch is loud enough to use.
Along the same lines, the headphone out was too quiet for me, even if the master was under my control. There is a software function to blast it out (with a warning) but I didn't realize that at the time.
As far as using it, it's pretty awesome. The main thing though is that all the auto sync and looping and slicing functions are based on the assumption that the beat grid is correct, and the Itch engine for determining this is way off. I assume if I'm just playing current house bangers it's fine, but live disco, hell, post-punk or whatever, more often than not, it's off.
It's pretty easy to fix it though, even on the fly. Like if you're cueing a song you can just click to add a marker every 4 beats for the first few measures. That may not make it perfect for the whole song, but if you want to loop the first few measures to help have time to mix into it, that'll work.
You have to do that because the Twitch does not have a Loop In/Loop Out button. I wonder if you can do that with the mac keyboard, but I'm not sure if Itch even supports that? On one hand that's a little annoying, but on the other hand half the time I'd do it manually on a CDJ I'd fuck it up anyway. With this, so long as the beat grid is decent, you just turn on the loop at whatever amount of measures you want and it'll sound great.
If I was using this seriously, I'd do it ahead of time. Or maybe if/when I use this to record a mix at home (part of the plan), I'll just run through the selection first and fix a few of the beat markers. You can also save loops. It's pretty awesome. You have the 8 pads. You hit the LOOP button, and those 8 pads become loop lengths ranging from 2 bars to 4 to 6 to 8 etc. You swipe the slider and the range shifts higher so you can loop like 32 bars. Once you like a loop you hit the loop button again and enter a mode where all 8 buttons go dim. You hit one and blam, you've saved that loop to that button. You hit the hot-cue button and you suddenly get 8 places to store cues. So you can see how much fun that can all be. It's not all about hot-shot controllerism dubstep cue triggers and whatnot, you can just do a nice simple personal edit.
Because the beat grid was so often off, I never bothered using the auto sync, I just beatmatched the old-fashioned way. It's a bit weird to use the touchpad swipe to speed up and slow down, but just like switching from a 1200 to a CDJ to a denon to whatever, you eventually get the feel for how much pushing and nudging a swipe does. There's all these tips on the screen to how in sync the tracks are, but it's best just to trust your ears.
Of course if it's all simple house and techno you can do it all auto.
In any case, I paid 350$ for it, which is really cheap for what it can do. I still think if I find more reasons to DJ digitally, I can sell this for 300, sell my Rane mixer for 500 and end up getting the just now out Vestax VCI-380, which far as I can tell, is this exact unit but with Vestax platters, an internal mixer so you can plug turntables into it, and more power. It also has like, aftertouch effects on the pads, which would be fun.
Anyway, I'm having a blast with it. It's easy to use, the effects are fun to use and versatile. Before I got it I told all my DJ pals about it, who are all total purists and they thought it sounded like a joke. But you can do some really cool stuff with it really easy, nice and dubbed out/trippy tweaking of the type that nobody in the youtube demo videos are doing, because they're all doing dubstep remixes of Lil Wayne. Who knows, maybe soon I'll record some mixes with it, and maybe I'll use some of these abilities and maybe it'll sound cool.
Maybe.

ty for that
― puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Monday, 28 May 2012 01:48 (twelve years ago) link
I have one other issue, which is the same on a lot of controllers, but when I'm mixing, I find it easiest to scratch cue, then nudge if needed, and if I get off, scratch a downbeat again instead of just going back to a cue point, which is why I always loved pioneer CDJs and hated other CD players where the platter either had "scratch" mode or "pitch adjust" mode depending on a button. This thing is kinda like that, where the touchpad has many different functions and sometimes it gets crazy. I'll explain more later.
― dan selzer, Monday, 28 May 2012 02:03 (twelve years ago) link
Sorry. Had to watch Mad Men.
There's the one touch strip. When paused, it acts like a scratch platter, perfect for setting a cue point or moving short distances. When playing, it becomes a pitch adjust to nudge up or down to beatmatch. But at any moment you can hit it again while playing, and it reverts to scratch mode, so you can theoretically grab it and scratch or whatnot. BUT, either if you hit it again, or if you do certain other things, it goes into another mode where it controls things, like the range of the loops/slices. So that's my big pet peave...I'll often go to nudge pitch and find nothing happens, because at some point it switched to the loop mode.
BUT THAT'S NOT ALL FOLKS! There's a second button that turns it into a needle drop, which is great, let's you go straight to the end or beginning of a song, or anywhere. Touch it is like picking up the needle and whereever you let go, that's where it leaves it. Problem is, it automatically then reverts back to nudge mode, making it impossible to pick up the needle and drop it repeatedly till you find what you're looking for without hitting the button again.
And is that it? NOPE. Hit the needle drop button again, and it becomes a goddamn scrub wheel, handy for fast forwarding and rewinding.
I guess I'd be happiest if there was a dedicated button for all these functions, but that's asking a lot. Although not really. They could've made the 8 pads select different functions with a "shift" or function key. There is a shift key, but that acts to delete hot cues and loops from the pads.

I take that back.
― dan selzer, Monday, 28 May 2012 06:17 (twelve years ago) link
hmm i was stuck on the s4 because i thought the s2 didn't have the audio out but now i see it has the same sound out as the s4? that makes a big difference. i have never really made use of four decks (mainly because it eats up way too much of my screen for my liking) but i have used a third deck from time to time, mainly to support a really fast transition out of a bridging track. but that is a level of complexity i'm only comfortable with when i'm doing "rehearsed" mixes for ilx or whatever.
but i've also read that the s2 doesn't have a dedicated filter knob which would probably make a big difference in my case because i love my reverb and lfo filters to death.
― the late great, Monday, 28 May 2012 06:30 (twelve years ago) link
yea maybe I should use the high-pass filter but I don't know where it is in traktor. also, what's the essential effects for house and techno?
― dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Monday, 28 May 2012 07:37 (twelve years ago) link
I should hope there aren't any, because if using effects is "essential" then chances are they're being used to cover up weak mixes or because the dj is just bored (lol, I definitely play with my filter while waiting to cue). There's a tendency to not use effect judiciously, and nothing is more annoying than the DJ who throws on the flanger or looper in between every track, or does long, unnecessary filter sweeps when you just want to hear the track, and not stand there waiting for the dj to be done with her high-pass filter solo. Effects in general should be more like a finishing touch, and not the main course. But that's just me.
