nah i didn't like it much either. seemed a bit, dunno, desperate to impress (breath of tracks/knowledge of music) but kind of lazy at putting all of those things together into a whole. i liked several tracks on it though.

I thought the Jaar mix was brilliant, but I'm not too deep of an electronic/techno head. I shared it with some non-music-obsessive people who were really taken. I think it slots together really well in terms of keeping a steady atmosphere and having a nice pace. I will definitely be returning to it.

Rio Grande - Let's Groove (Tonight Edit)<--- my highlight. sounds very similar to the Hey Boys track he did.

just got to this & totally agree, best track so far

main thing i didn't like about this mix is how many long stretches of beatlessness, or at least drum-lessness, there were. his use of percussion is my favourite thing about him as an artist & he has a great ear for beats, his use of space & texture is really cool too obv but moreso when it's complementing something rythm-based than just pure sound

all this griping is making me even more super-looking-forward to listening to this while reading in bed at night

Played this mix 3 more times in full. It's one of the most audacious mixes I've ever heard. It's unbelievable that he used his Essential Mix for this type of mix instead of just playing 2hrs of house.

idk if the world is ready for bill callahan edits guys. tho the nsync thing was actually pretty great

That Callahan track only plays for about a minute though. Never heard it before this set.

people who loved the album prob love this mix

this mix was a joy to listen to. i love the blurry line between tracks that sound jaar-y but are untouched vs others that are basically full remixes.

perfect soundtrack to a lazy sunday bbq in the sunshine. i was all (lol i'm an idiot) geared up to hate on this after all the fuss (i think jaar is a bit overrated as a producer) but yeah, it's really great

Was just listening to this when the Leveson enquiry live feed came back on...took me a while to work out what was going on, but it turns out you can put any kind of serious speaking dude in the background and it sounds extra-Jaary.

Ah, beat me to it. The mix flows way better now.

Listened to this today for the first time since the few weeks after it came out -- perfect fit for a grey and windy day. The opening with Badalamenti getting all enraptured is magical. I love the Baroque trio piece followed by Keith Jarrett, and the Leonard Cohen cover, and surprise, the Feist song. I can see how this can seem like forced eclecticism, but so much of it is so good that I'd rather not see him edit himself too much.

Wait, never noticed the question about the Prism.

It took 2 weeks to arrive, typical for shipping to Canada. It's smaller than I expected, sits easily in the palm of my hand. It's an attractive little box. The buttons aren't labelled, so it's not intuitive to use. The music is hit and miss. Nico's stuff (Don't Break My Love, Why Didn't You Save Me, the covers of Ishmael and Avalanche) is great, the rest of it didn't stick with me. Haven't listened to it mich -- too much hassle to rip it and can't be bothered to carry it around.

Xinobi's done a nice edit of "And I Say", the Jaar track with Scout LaRue (originally titled With Just One Glance). Much like El Bandido or Mi Mujer -- a bit faster, more of a 4x4 pulse. Good for the People Who Don't Like The Album.

A terrific little set at the Mondrian Hotel as part of Art Basel -- until he approached curfew. "I have time for one more...?" he asked hopefully, glancing at the sound mixer. A 1:30 later the hotel cut the power.

The crowd was small enough for me to approach him afterwards and chat for about a minute. I mentioned watching him at Pitchfork in July, which surprised him.

3 - jaar (on knobs, keys and vocals), a guitarist and a saxophonist (occasionally on keys)

I saw him at the second, Darkside-billed show bcz the big one sold out - couple of hundred people, Jaar on knobs, keys, vocals and gong, guitarist on guitar and double bass (mainly used for textures and percussion with loop pedals). wish I'd seen both but if it had to be only one, it was pretty special

This might have been Darkside actually but given he only paid one show here he might have pretended it was a Jaar show to avoid confusing people.
