Trof is an eating and drinking palace in Fallowfield, with a live music lounge. Upstairs is a dark painted vaulted ceilinged roof, where a mostly student aged crowd stood waiting on Thursday, June 20th. Singer Peter Cowap, dressed in skinny jeans, mop hairstyle, and winkle picker boots, grabbed the mic exclaiming that they, Purple Heart Parade, “We’re fucking massive!”

While still singing, Cowap a couple of times lay flat on the floor, crouched, and then wildly thrashed himself about and banged his tambourine on the floor. He is NOT what you’d call a stand behind the mic performer. Wearing a rosary around his neck, at times Cowap was so immersed in the music he seemed removed from the room entirely.

Peter Cowap“LIES and KITES” was a slower psychedelic dream of a song. The band turned their backs on the room, not so as to shut us out, but instead to lose themselves in their sound.

“The Room”, a magnificent bow to Spiritualized, brought the set to a much too early end. People keep on listening, PHP keep on playing.

John Lennon McCullagh was just on Look North! They said "Remember where you saw him first" before he played one of his more political sounding song. Some of the lyrics included "The factories have all closed down" and "The kids are drinking on the street"

Is he actually going to become popular? This can't really happen can it?

Richard said: “We draw a lot of musical influence from bands like Manic Street Preachers, The Pixies and indie rock bands from the late 80s.
“Our music covers many aspects of life such as politics, religion and how people think and feel about certain things.”

“Our influences include Blondie, Fleetwood Mac, The Who, and a lot of Rod Stewart.
“I love Fleetwood Mac, our guitarist loves Oasis, and our drummer loves Keith Moon, so there's lots of influences going on.
“Our style is upbeat, easy listening, pop rock. We've been compared to The Beautiful South.”

Named after a comic strip from the 2000AD series, they draw on influences such as Broken Social Scene and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds to create something which is at once dark, euphoric and uplifting.
By binding together the traditional back-bone of guitar, bass and drums with an unlikely approach to the violin, cello, and piano they have received radio airplay from various BBC 6Music DJs.
Angular stabs of snyths, waves of strings and Stephen Ellis’s almost baritone vocals combine to form a sound that is reminiscent of Leeds post-rockers I Like Trains.

With influences as diverse as Johnny Cash, Bob Marley, Simon and Garfunkel, Pink Floyd, The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Aerosmith and Nirvana, The Ram Raid's music is difficult to pigeon-hole, so I asked them straight: "How would you describe your music?"
The response: "Hard-hitting alternative energetic riff-based harmonious rock with a dash of funk and groove"

rly? i associate that look with gormless innocents. they give it a good go but deep down they know they're never gonna make it.

Merdeyeux, Friday, 8 August 2014 14:44 (ten years ago) link

the swagger mentioned above reminds me of late 70s rod stewart - a sort of laddy glammy look that's entirely laughable unless you're rod stewart (and often even then).

the dudes daphnis just linked to are posh lads trying to seem down to earth aren't they? diff thing.

"trough lolly"??? (stevie), Friday, 8 August 2014 14:47 (ten years ago) link

xp

oh i didn't mean "new swagger" as in Billy Big-Bollocks rock and roller mentality, just in terms of there being fucking hundreds of wannabe bands affecting this kind of style decision now

The aim of Rooney is spot correct (Daphnis Celesta), Friday, 8 August 2014 14:48 (ten years ago) link

yeah maybe stevie i don't know if they code as posh tho? it's kinda normcore-y and kinda "we let our music do the talking" but the beards add a certain something i can't quite nail yet

The aim of Rooney is spot correct (Daphnis Celesta), Friday, 8 August 2014 14:50 (ten years ago) link

that kind of thoughtful styling that wants to pretend it just happened without thought
