The debut album from Cinematic Orchestra's Phil France is probably going to end up my favourite release of the year. Gorgeous stuff

eoy list roundups have recently brought saada bonaire to my attention... (WARNING: video is nsfw)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWVFzQoTQ1w
i listened to this without knowing anything about it and was surprised at how perfectly it was touching on all my favorite early 80s balearic touchstones... then i realized it was legit unreleased stuff from the '80s. so maybe not balearic "revival" per se
― akadarbarijava (psychgawsple), Tuesday, 3 December 2013 18:14 (ten years ago) link
yeah apparently the one single they actually released (You Could Be More Who You Are) was a legit "early '80s balearic touchstone." that record is really great I think. been listening a ton on spotify but haven't come across the vinyl yet.
― dmr, Tuesday, 3 December 2013 18:30 (ten years ago) link
I would have slotted it under post-punk myself but can definitely see how it fits nicely into this sound.
― dmr, Tuesday, 3 December 2013 18:31 (ten years ago) link
yeah i mean there's definitely some postpunk in there, alongside a whole lot of sultry saxophone and beach sounds, post-punk can be balearic

fwiw they also happen to be balearic dreambabes

just discovered that most (maybe all?) of pacific horizons' output is up on spotify, the new track "bandini" is kinda nice. their whole schtick is a lot more lo-fi than i realized, it works great at times but can kinda clash with some of the other, more relaxed sounds

Sure it's been mentioned before. Great track anyway and was the winner of DJ History's Furtive 50 poll, stopping Terje from completing a hat trick of successive wins.

just isolating the balearic-ish stuff from a what i'm listening to 2014 post for the tru-balearic heads who don't bookmark those mainstream threads:
nenad markovic - kayto ep -- the best new nu-balearic-disco i've heard in a long time; on prins thomas' labelmaricopa - pastel love part two -- warm and gorgeous downtempo balearic synth-lovesuzanne kraft - missum LP -- more ambient than his previous stuff, totally beautiful, works very well as an albumgigi masin - talk to the sea -- compilation on music from memory, anybody who follows the new age threads needs to be listening to thisrotla - laguna EP -- some perfect beach-drive balearic a la hatchbackalmunia - xeni EP -- almunia work with the italo disco side of balearic rather than the light and airy guitar-work of their previous stuff, still great
― karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Friday, 2 May 2014 20:48 (ten years ago) link
<3 that gigi masin. also like what i've heard of the upcoming music from memory reissue of joan bibiloni's work

Really like the Suzanne Kraft and the Alumnia, despite getting laughed hard at by my boyfriend regularly for appreciating this stuff
― boxedjoy, Friday, 2 May 2014 22:42 (ten years ago) link
what's funny about suzanne kraft? i can see thinking almunia is cheesy if you're a pleb that's not into disco

haven't gotten around to all of that list yet but i really dig the nenad markovic and maricopa stuff so far
was it gr8080 that was talking about these weird emi music sweden comps on spotify? because they are excellent! and there are like 20 of them... "balearic blend" to "balearic pop" to "balearic soft rock" to "balearic ambient" and "balearic house" etc. i have no idea how these exist but it's going to be a good summer

That Seahawks LP is streaming right now:
http://thequietus.com/articles/15237-seahawks-paradise-freaks-album-stream
Astral-minded oceanographers Seahawks last week released their second album, Paradise Freaks, out on their own label Ocean Moon, and have kindly given us a full stream. The duo, Jon Tye and Pete Fowler, have been hugely prolific - starting out with 'Omega Beach', their ace Don Henley-Oneohtrix Point Never meltdown, and producing countless remixes of the likes of The Horrors and Tim Burgess - and have now laid down a new full-length dispatch from their titular paradisiacal island, floating somewhere between Koh Phi Phi and the Sea of Tranquility we'd venture. Both Burgess and The Horrors' Tom Furse join the cast of Paradise Freaks, in fact, the former contributing vocals, alongside Maria Minerva, Indra Dunis of Peaking Lights and Nick Nicely, and the latter laying down some overdubs, making for a beautiful swathe of tropical electronica. The songs glide in between ambient waves, alto sax zephyrs blowing over sun-melted analogue synths, and some dubbier cuts, such as the title track and the ace, aerated 'Drifting', anchored down by some fine bass heft and aquatic guitar purls, treading a line between louche soundscapes and some more meditative points, notably Nicely's hazed 'Electric Waterfalls'.Listen above and get hold of it from the band's website here. Seahawks will be playing Kendal Calling and Festival Number 6, as well continuing a DJ residency every other month at the Big Chill bar on London's Brick Lane, while Fowler also has a residency at the Hand Of Glory on Amhurst Road, with his next set this Saturday, May 17.
