does anyone know how to use echo properly on DJM700 (for build up before a drop)? I played with the settings (the ms and the beat thingies) but it all sounded like crap. everything clangs uncontrollably. also, how to do the freeze (trailing) with echo? you know, the one that makes a song goes like "i wanna dance with you-u-u-u-u-u"? thanks in advance.

i use that freeze effect a lot, but in traktor there's a freeze button on the delay unit.

yeah, I used the freeze button on my traktor controller, but on CDJ-mixer setup I do that by turning on the effect and then hitting pause. not very practical but I'm sure there's another way.

that's the real way to do it...not just pause but cut it out w the faders or switch the input to line from phono or whatever.

ah, I see. still can't figure out how to do stutter/echo properly though. with traktor I just turn the knob up and it sounds good. with djm everything clangs. do you have any recommended settings, dan? I mean the ms and beat thingies.

I'm just some Allen and Heath rube whose never used a DJM, but as a wild guess (since I was thinking this the last time I watched someone DJ): Is there a tempo-tap button or something (like on that big flashing orange button) or a way to adjust the filter to the BPM? If it's clanging it's because the timing's off; there should be some way to register tempo.

yes, I can choose the beat for the effect, like 1/2, 1/4, etc.

but I have no idea which one should I choose and what's the best timing (it ranges from 0 to x000 ms).

but choosing from those times doesn't imply being in sync with the music. As mentioned above, there should be a tap temp. So long as it's in sync it'll sound "right", then the timing is just a question of the effect you're going for.

Aha, it worked. Apparently I just need to choose the beat and don't tinker with the timing.

One more question about cdj: do you really need to nudge the wheel further away when beatmatching compared to controller? Or at least compared to traktor s2 which is the only controller I've tried.

You don't have to do that with traktor s2?

for example, when mixing with traktor I need to nudge the jog about 2-hour (imagine the wheel as a clock). but with cdj, with the same "distance" between the same pair of songs, I need to nudge it 6-hour.

on another note, about the freeze effect, I failed to make the song trails. it just goes like "it's not over-er-er-er" whereas in traktor I can make it "er-er-er-infinity". any idea how to do that with a pioneer mixer?

I don't know the specifics of the effects on the pioneer. I never use effects. Having it freeze into infinity is not something delay can or would do, so if the Pioneer doesn't have such an effect, it doesn't have that effect and that's the end of that!

Likewise, "nudge" amounts are totally dependent on the whim of the manufacturer. Maybe it's adjustable on Traktor. In my experience it's not adjustable on the CDJ, though I haven't used the new generation much. Like anything I imagine it'd different on each unit and you just have to get used to it. My guess is if it takes longer to nudge it, then the Pioneer is giving you a higher quality/more sensitive incremental approach, and one that's the industry standard.

Hi DJ's, I need some advice on whether to buy direct or belt drive turntable. My main purpose is to listen to records and convert them to digital, but there's a chance that I'll use it to DJ in the future (when I have the money to buy a second one). Do you think belt drive sounds that much better than direct? If that's the case then I'll be willing to sacrifice the prospect of vinyl DJ-ing.

if you're going to want to DJ with it get a direct drive. Sound pretty much comes down to needle choice for me, but I'm no audiophile.

I think only hi-fi snobs care about how much better belt drive sounds than direct drive, but even the worst party DJ reaps the benefit of direct drive.

If you want a win-win situation, there's some company that does upgrades to Technics 1200s.

Wow thanks for the quick responses! The 1200 is slightly outside my budget and I imagine it'd be a hassle to do a digital conversion (what with the soundcards, cables, etc) so I'm eyeing this item: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002S1CJ2Q. What do you think?

One can make the argument that nothing beats a real 1200, that they're worth the extra money, that you shouldn't need to spend anything on a soundcard (no mic in on your computer?) etc etc, but i'd also mention that that LP is generally pretty well regarded when it comes to cheaper 1200 clones w/ extra features.

being able to control the start and stop speeds is pretty cool, though I'm not sure why anyone would want a DJ turntable with a slow start.
