just picked up a vinyl copy of Space Is Only Noise yesterday, holy moly this stuff is great - had only seen/heard that boiler room set. the store has it listed as "downtempo" and I told them they were doing him a disservice, this is so much more abstract and compelling.

I got tickets to see them next week. The live clips i've seen online are incredible. Has this interview been shared? http://www.electronicbeats.net/en/features/conversations/its-as-if-the-plants-are-speaking-or-even-singing-to-you-daniel-pinchbeck-talks-to-darksides-nicolas-jaar-and-dave-harrington/

I saw him solo not as Darkside but the set was kinda halfway between Jaar and Darkside in terms of sound anyway.

$20 is sorta steep but i think i have to go

Darkside live is a bargain at $20. Killer show. Go if you have a chance.

Saw them live in SF. Killer show, great visuals. Use of fog+lasers+LEDs+mirrors was mesmerizing. Crowd was fucking horrible. Wouldn't. Shut. Up.

octobeard, Tuesday, 28 January 2014 02:25 (ten years ago) link

kinda surprised they sold out the Fillmore, even some of my Jaar-loving friends didn't know who was playing

cristalnacht (lukas), Tuesday, 28 January 2014 02:36 (ten years ago) link

SF crowds can be the worst. I had to leave a Pat Mahoney DJ set because the dance floor was clogged with people staring at their iphones.

Fetchboy, Wednesday, 29 January 2014 06:50 (ten years ago) link

Missed that SF show. Scalpers wanted to charge 60. No Thanks.

That being said, when I read it I was at the Fillmore I was underwhelmed.
The sound there is hit/miss plus the concert crowd vibe for a Jaar show was not what I wanted. Looks like my instinct was correct.

I have been watching his live shows on youtube and I am convinced Darkside is getting BETTER in a short amount of time of touring.

My main beef with Darkside has been the overuse of Dave's guitar and at times Jaar's vocals.

I watched this video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPRQBSitPOQ

Paper Trails has always been the song that exhibits those two qualities to a larger effect. However, in just a few months Dave has toned down on the guitar solo side of things and is more restrained, more focused on sonic ambience and melody. He still tweaks out solos but its in service of the groove. This may seem like a subtle thing but it has made me like Darkside much more. Also, Nico is becoming even more adept at switching from minimal/maximal when it comes to the midi controller and the beats. His vocals also seem more confident and natural. I always sensed a hint of affect in his vocals on the Darkside project (really all of his vocals) but i think he's getting more comfortable. Overall, I am super pleased with where they are going and I have to catch them next time around.

Darkside cover Black Sabbath's Planet Caravan at the end of their Boiler Room set.

Never heard the original before, it's beautiful:

"Hello.

DARKSIDE is coming to an end, for now.
On September 12th, we will be playing our last show at Brooklyn Masonic Temple. (tickets : http://bit.ly/1p6XtRR)

Here are two songs that we made while working on "Psychic" but that didn't make the album. "

Also at work. Have downloaded but this will be a treat for tonight. You get lots of bonus material with the tracks (all .m4a format btw): photos, PDFs, etc.

i think i still have a .AVI of pomegrantes somewhere

gr8080, Thursday, 25 June 2015 18:51 (nine years ago) link

Apparently this is an alternate soundtrack that Jaar made for the movie 'The Colour of Pomegranates' from 1969. It's a film with some breath-taking imagery and it's among my favorite films from the decade. Don't know if this is commissioned work or just a fan hommage by Jaar but makes me happy this exists.

I still haven't listened to the album. Anyone knows if there's a version that pairs the original movie with this alt. soundtrack?

Ok, 10 minutes in and this is great! The original film is one of my favorite movies from the 60's and Jaar is one of my favorite artists of the past decade! Seeing/hearing the two together is amazing. It would be so good if he started doing alt. soundtracks of 60's/70's trippy arthouse films for fun as a series. Other films which would be great if soundtracked by Jaar:

Sedmikrasky (1966)
Funeral Parade of Roses (1969)
WR: Mysteries of the Organism (1971)
The Devils (1971)
Zabriskie Point (1970)
Diabel (1972)
The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant (1972)
The Holy Mountain (1973)
Hausu (1977)
3 women (1977)
Suspiria (1976)

Took me a while to find then tbh but they are in there. When I decompressed it I got a chess knight icon, clicked on that and the music files are in an icon that looks like the mac terminal window, if you know what tHat looks like. Or maybe it didn't download properly indeed.

Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Wednesday, 1 July 2015 22:13 (nine years ago) link

if you open the zip in Windows Explorer it looks empty, but if you extract it with an expander tool it works.

i found pomegranates rather underwhelming. will he ever make music as incredible as the run of remixes and singles before his debut album again?

lex pretend, Thursday, 2 July 2015 09:28 (nine years ago) link

Its not supposed to be listened as an album I think.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 2 July 2015 09:49 (nine years ago) link

how convenient

Number None, Thursday, 2 July 2015 10:35 (nine years ago) link

he says he hopes to release it on vinyl, so i suppose he does reckon it should be listened to as an album.

Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Friday, 3 July 2015 17:38 (nine years ago) link

two weeks pass...

So, does he plan to release all of those remixes and songs in vinyl or whatever format other than mp3 at any point?

The Student
Russian Dolls
With just one glance you (and the brilliant 'And I say' remix by xinobi)
No Regular Play - Owe Me rmx
Ellen Allien - Flashy Flashy rmx
The Bees - Winter Rose rmx
The Hellen Hollins Singers - Consolation edit

I don't think any of those have an official physical release and they're all great.

gonna give the mix a listen but i felt like he reealllllly fell off last year, was completely underwhelmed (and in fact bored) by all the nymphs releases. his debut album was already a bit of step down from the singles and remixes that preceded it (feel like floating points' album has a similar relationship to his previous singles) and he just seems to be heading further and further in that direction.

cher guevara (lex pretend), Tuesday, 5 January 2016 16:30 (eight years ago) link

i wasn't really into the Floating Points album, but it seemed pretty clear that he was trying to do something totally different from the dance singles.

well duh, ditto jaar's album vs singles, i just think it's a worse thing

OTM with his solo stuff, but I still really love his Darkside work the most. But yeah, it feels like he's already lost the energy and vitality that his early teenage tracks had and has self indulged bit too heavily these days. His RA 500 mix was okay.

octobeard, Thursday, 18 February 2016 06:57 (eight years ago) link

Fights was the best thing I've heard from him, but the supposed genius of those early singles has never been readily apparent to me.

Matt DC, Thursday, 18 February 2016 07:47 (eight years ago) link

The debut album was gorgeous on a phenomenological level - I could listen to it just for the richness of the sound - but it was more than a little lacking in tunes. I've heard most of the early singles now and they're OK; prefer the Floating Points stuff.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 18 February 2016 10:34 (eight years ago) link

The title track of the debut album had enough tunes - and a drop - to fill the whole record for me. I loved the album and still listen to that title track all the time.
