I read this and assumed some amateur had put together a 'cover' by chopping up syllables from old Aretha vocals and sticking them together with autotune. Didn't really notice this wasn't actually the case till I got to the chorus.
― Eyeball Kicks, Tuesday, 30 September 2014 16:10 (nine years ago) link
Yeah just b/c aretha is a legend doesn't mean she can't fall flat every now and again. The cover is dreadful.

side note but i don't think i've told this story on ilx and it's a favorite: i was working a couple of years ago on a free live show with j!mmy cl!ff. Cl!ff is a fairly important artist in my world; I grew up with 'the h@rder they come' lp on heavy repeat through my preteens and i mean, cmon, it's j!mmy cl!ff. i was super excited about this show and then it "sold out" i.e. the house filled up and they closed the doors. then everybody who couldn't get in through the main gate came over to the VIP/press entrance to beg their case and try to slip in. so that had me missing most of the show because I had to deal with the fallout and individual arguments; try to nicely talk down a lot of very very angry folks who demanded we go get cliff so he could see that his cousin's friend was here and how dare we not let them in, don't we know who they are, etc. Like maybe two hours of that nonstop. After awhile you just wear down being the person whose job it is to say no. So I finally escape when they shut down the VIP gate and wander up to the stage, kinda exhausted and out of it and not even caring anymore. then, just as I walk into the pit, cl!ff is between songs and I imagine it was a lucky coincidence but he more or less wanders right over to where i sat down and starts in on many rivers to cross, ten feet away, more or less sung directly to me. i was dumbstruck, it completely caught me off guard, one of those times where the music and the moment completely demolishes you. and then i noticed about twenty seconds into the song that he had the fly on his red velour trousers wide open. Like really wide open, unmistakably so. And I think the metaphor there is true of what fame is: you can be the coolest guy in the world, beloved by an entire country, singing your signature song to a sold out crowd of thousands and still, hey, your fly is open.it was a great show btw
