not so much "lost album" as "lost"/scrapped direction for her next album. also, the "go" thing, if actually a misconception, comes courtesy the press:

"Grimes said that the Visions follow-up she had been working on "sucked, so I threw it out and started again." The reaction to "Go"—which was originally written for Rihanna—helped dictate the change of pace. "It upsets a lot of my fans, and I get why it upsets them," she said. “Everybody was like, ‘Oh, Grimes is pandering to the radio.""
http://pitchfork.com/news/56680-grimes-scraps-new-album-sessions-after-negative-reaction-to-go-starts-again/

and from the NYT interview p4k is quoting:

"“It upsets a lot of my fans, and I get why it upsets them,” says Boucher of the big, booming track. “Everybody was like, ‘Oh, Grimes is pandering to the radio.’ ” But the failure, ultimately, was a productive one. By that point, she had already begun to hate the album she was working on..."

I think Grimes sounds really good filtered through a "pandering to the radio" box.

five six and (man alive), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 02:36 (ten years ago)

I mean I really like her just slightly offbeat take on a radio-friendly single.

five six and (man alive), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 02:36 (ten years ago)

I could do without the dubsteppy part, but it's not that bad as far as those kinds of parts go

five six and (man alive), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 02:37 (ten years ago)

imo the dubsteppy part on the "go" demo was maybe a bit much but the final version was perfect

soyrev, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 02:39 (ten years ago)

I really like the "Phone Sex" song she did with Blood Diamonds a couple years before "Go".

She is such an AWFUL musician and songstress!

And I say this as someone who has all of her albums and some ep's. Compelling stuff, but it's soooo bad.

"I'll try to re record Realiti so u can have mp3s & I'll consider for album but i think I have better" https://twitter.com/Grimezsz/status/575141357200670720 can't wait to hear the better

ufo, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 06:49 (ten years ago)

this song sounds nice but I don't find it particularly strong, especially compared to her best previous material.
I'm a bit surprised by the raving reactions here.
I'm glad she, herself, didn't consider this song good enough for the album.
It means there are better things to expect !

AlXTC from Paris, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 11:04 (ten years ago)

no come on this song is incredible

Treeship, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 13:51 (ten years ago)

i've listened to it seven times already today

Treeship, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 14:00 (ten years ago)

this song is great ... reminds me of "vowels = space + time" (my fav song of hers) in that could be a pop song but it's too impressionistic, but not too impressionistic that it feels like she wasted an opportunity to make a good pop song (if that makes sense). it's a fine balance.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 10 March 2015 14:23 (ten years ago)

Yeah I love this and I was on the fence about Grimes' stuff before now (although I did like 'Genesis' a lot).

Gavin, Leeds, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 14:37 (ten years ago)

hum. I must be missing something...
to me it's a nice album track or b-side (like these things still exist !). I like the production and arrangements but the songwriting isn't great.
it's nowhere near Vanessa, Oblivion, Genesis... or Vowels which is much better !

AlXTC from Paris, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 15:34 (ten years ago)

oh is this lovely

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 15:45 (ten years ago)

I feel this strange mix of crush and awe watching that vid

five six and (man alive), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 16:21 (ten years ago)

love it, this thing needs to be a single like yesterday. video is crazy endearing

RAP GAME SHANI DAVIS (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 19:50 (ten years ago)

It's like watching the sweet girl from your summer camp mess hall table, the one who actually talks nicely to you even though you can barely get a word out and just stare meekly, suddenly get up on stage at the camp talent show and just destroy everyone

five six and (man alive), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 19:57 (ten years ago)

hmm

nose, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 20:04 (ten years ago)

I mean there is something about the way she manages to come off as unpolished yet is obviously an incredible dancer.

five six and (man alive), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 20:05 (ten years ago)

A lot of that is in her vocals, I think. She lets them peter out and drift away, and especially on this song she seems to leave whole lines unfinished, like she's omitted whole words for you to fill in. Pretty powerful; the entire song feels like that climactic, inaudible whisper from Lost in Translation

Evan R, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 20:11 (ten years ago)

throwing virtual vegetables at you for that post

some dude, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 20:22 (ten years ago)

lol

insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 20:24 (ten years ago)

haha yeah I realized it was a little tacky after I clicked submit. But I do think it's an effective approach; leaving something undefined in a song that's otherwise so poppy and direct

Evan R, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 20:25 (ten years ago)

imply a cowbell

Team Foxcatcherwatcher (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 20:28 (ten years ago)

Team Foxcatcherwatcher (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 20:28 (ten years ago)

I deserve the vegetables, my posts were way tackier

five six and (man alive), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 20:56 (ten years ago)

srsly, you had some dreams to remember there for a minute, man alive.

how's life, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 22:23 (ten years ago)

i think it's just really exciting to hear her voice again, everyone is so otm about her impressionistic singing and production, let's hope the LP is out this year maybe

flappy bird (spazzmatazz), Wednesday, 11 March 2015 07:08 (ten years ago)

So ecstatically good.
I think it might be because I recently watched KOTOKO, but I'm getting a bit of a Cocco vibe from her these days.

MatthewK, Wednesday, 11 March 2015 11:45 (ten years ago)

Reminds me of this feeling when discovering Visions and being not quite sure what to make it but enjoying it and playing it over and over and over. I can't think of a Grimes that had lasting effect for me (maybe Vanessa?) but the first few tens listen are intensely satisfying.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 11 March 2015 17:11 (ten years ago)

song is great (great), haven't yet bothered to watch the video

2-chords, a farfisa organ and peons to the lord (contenderizer), Wednesday, 11 March 2015 23:05 (ten years ago)

I, have not played a single track, this many times, in a day, since forever.

MatthewK, Thursday, 12 March 2015 12:28 (ten years ago)

love the whispered parts of this. and her dancing. and everything about her vocals. it's been a long time since i've felt this enthusiastic about an upcoming album.

Treeship, Thursday, 12 March 2015 13:46 (ten years ago)

i think she's the coolest person i know of
