Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 3 November 2015 17:34 (ten years ago)

just a teeeny bit of michael hutchence realness too

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 3 November 2015 17:35 (ten years ago)

maybe it's the shirtless flailing but this song has started to make me think of an alternate-universe bubblegum Jane's Addiction

the naive cockney chorus (Simon H.), Tuesday, 3 November 2015 17:35 (ten years ago)

Is there an alternate universe where this Sideshow Bob-fronted atrocity doesn't exist? I'd be down on my knees praying for one, if this wasn't enough proof that there is no God.

Turrican, Tuesday, 3 November 2015 18:18 (ten years ago)

You've got to let it go, Turrican. It's time.

I know when that Ott line zings (Spottie), Tuesday, 3 November 2015 18:21 (ten years ago)

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 4 November 2015 00:36 (ten years ago)

i'm of course watching live videos of the new songs. "change of heart" sounds like their "say hello wave goodbye." "she's american" is obv "settle down" part 2 but i don't mind that at all

and "the sound" is like their aesthetic applied to disco, and is the most exciting of the three

uberweiss, Tuesday, 10 November 2015 17:50 (ten years ago)

the last minute of "change of heart" my heart is bursting open & i'm in agony

uberweiss, Tuesday, 10 November 2015 17:57 (ten years ago)

YES.

Though LOL at "you used to have a race straight out a magazine" and "I never found love in the city".

Tim F, Tuesday, 10 November 2015 21:11 (ten years ago)

They... Can't seriously propose to pass "She's American" off as a new song can they?

Tim F, Tuesday, 10 November 2015 21:22 (ten years ago)

lol it's so "settle down"

insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Tuesday, 10 November 2015 21:46 (ten years ago)

i never found love in the city
i just sat in self-pity and cried in the car
i just had a change of heart

insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Tuesday, 10 November 2015 21:47 (ten years ago)

"change of heart"'s lyrics are all crazy good (when you were coming across as clever / and you lit the wrong end of a cigarette)

I'm in fact open to being cool with these guys, esp after that ep track Tim F posted

insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Tuesday, 10 November 2015 22:37 (ten years ago)

^^^^ Yeah I bet there's some amazing stuff that simply won't see the light of day as a result.

OTOH, OMG at "Somebody Else".

Tim F, Tuesday, 10 November 2015 22:41 (ten years ago)

lol i'm already wearing this album out

insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Tuesday, 10 November 2015 22:46 (ten years ago)

yeah that was pretty cool again, they're not a one-trick band at all - and whatever they do, they do with exceptional sonic boldness, which is nice & suits them

avant-garde, sissy bounce, zombie rave, aquacrunk, warlock, oceangrunge, (imago), Tuesday, 10 November 2015 23:38 (ten years ago)

wow all those new songs sound great

ufo, Wednesday, 11 November 2015 01:20 (ten years ago)

The Sound is apparently the next single and deservedly

ufo, Wednesday, 11 November 2015 01:24 (ten years ago)

"she's american" sounds like every song off the first album boiled down to one track but it also sounds lighter than air i'm very down

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 11 November 2015 01:52 (ten years ago)

i already deeply love this song

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 11 November 2015 02:02 (ten years ago)

[Chorus]
And she likes to kiss but just don't eat
It was so intense, yeah, she's American
And she says I gotta fix my teeth
Man she's so American, she's American
And she likes to kiss but just don't eat
Socially elegant, she's American
And she says I gotta fix my teeth
Man she's so American

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 11 November 2015 02:06 (ten years ago)

head-shaking lol

repeating that face from a magazine motif from "she way out" i see

art baengels (monotony), Wednesday, 11 November 2015 22:44 (ten years ago)

from "robbers"! + additional references to "the city" and "sex"

insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Wednesday, 11 November 2015 22:48 (ten years ago)

magazine motif repetition already felt lazy by "she way out", at least it seems deliberate here.

In the live performance the lyric that jumped out at me was "You said I'm full of diseases / your eyes were full of regret".

Because Matt's lyrics are such a mash of dialogue it's often hard to know who's saying what about whom, though.

Tim F, Wednesday, 11 November 2015 22:52 (ten years ago)

and then you took a picture of your salad and put it on the internet

insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Wednesday, 11 November 2015 22:56 (ten years ago)

Got 3500 words with the boy Healy, talking about the new album, and drugs, and his "breakdown" and lots of other things in the paper.
My two favourite songs from the new album aren't being played live: Paris is part Only You, part Every Breath You Take, part self loathing; If I Believe You is a big deep soul ballad about atheism, but done with electronics instead of horns.
