8.5 is also what Pitchfork gave Joanna Newsom's latest.

MarkoP, Tuesday, 10 November 2015 15:51 (ten years ago)

It's also the same score they gave that fucking Tobias Jesso Jr. album.

MarkoP, Tuesday, 10 November 2015 15:52 (ten years ago)

how many 9.0s or higher do they give out? I can't recall seeing many for new music in 2015

too young for seapunk (Moodles), Tuesday, 10 November 2015 15:52 (ten years ago)

Looks like Deafheaven got one. Tame Impala got a 9.3 lol gtfo.

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Tuesday, 10 November 2015 15:54 (ten years ago)

They've given a few 9's this year.
9.0 to Deafheaven.
9.3 to Kendrick Lamar, Sufjan Stevens, Tame Impala, and Jamie XX.

MarkoP, Tuesday, 10 November 2015 15:56 (ten years ago)

This is literally the most boring conversation it is possible to have about this album.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 10 November 2015 15:59 (ten years ago)

Heard it got three and a half carp in Angling Times this month as well. Backlash?

Matt DC, Tuesday, 10 November 2015 16:00 (ten years ago)

But anyway, back to the music. . .

Austin, Tuesday, 10 November 2015 16:02 (ten years ago)

they dinged it for not having enough critic bait xp

Sod pfork. I want to live inside this album.

Whenever I have a look two dozen more comparisons have been made, this album is all and no pop. And I love how badass and defiant she is throughout. Visions was great but this album just makes me so HAPPY

fwiw, flesh isn't about the media

without getting into specifics, it's about other musicians

james brooks, Tuesday, 10 November 2015 16:25 (ten years ago)

Love how my 'reminds me of PC Music' post became 'influenced by PC Music' two seconds later. She's probably never heard of them

Still hate the title. Hate any album title with 'Art' in it tbh. Despite this, it is a solid, surprisingly ornate listen that deserves between 6 and 10 out of 10

listening more today, i don't think this is a bad album at all but it's def not the album i wanted from grimes. weirdness, where it hasn't been expunged completely, has been very tightly managed.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 10 November 2015 16:41 (ten years ago)

I know a certain mob film was mentioned as an inspiration for Kill V. Maim but I'm getting more of an American Gangster ref

welltris (crüt), Tuesday, 10 November 2015 17:04 (ten years ago)

they were blue, and now they can't love

μpright mammal (mh), Tuesday, 10 November 2015 17:05 (ten years ago)

wait, how did you and james brooks also know that. i was told that i was the only one who knew

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 10 November 2015 17:06 (ten years ago)

"genesis" has actually just been "blue" played in reverse this entire time

james brooks, Tuesday, 10 November 2015 17:13 (ten years ago)

true of the Old Testament book as well

welltris (crüt), Tuesday, 10 November 2015 17:31 (ten years ago)

also phil collins

james brooks, Tuesday, 10 November 2015 17:35 (ten years ago)

but not sega

MarkoP, Tuesday, 10 November 2015 17:38 (ten years ago)

I read in an earlier interview that she apparently sampled some obscure Japanese songs on the album, which is where I'm assuming where the opening riff of Butterfly comes from. Anyone know what they are?

MarkoP, Tuesday, 10 November 2015 17:44 (ten years ago)

"penguin dancer" by masayoshi takanaka on butterfly is the only sample

james brooks, Tuesday, 10 November 2015 17:54 (ten years ago)

"Easily" sounds a lot like Ray of Light Madonna. I was just listening to it and even my brother thought it was Madonna.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 10 November 2015 20:24 (ten years ago)

He is old.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 10 November 2015 20:25 (ten years ago)

Iirc Grimes said 'flesh without blood' is not a breakup song per se since she doesn't write anymore 'love songs'. I'm just going to assume it's a farewell song to the indie/underground scene.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 10 November 2015 20:31 (ten years ago)

Btw, almost every song off this album has its own individual artwork. I love that. Hopefully they'll be available on the cd booklet and on the vinyl version. Let me do a quick collage and I'll post it.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 10 November 2015 20:33 (ten years ago)

Also it seems some of them are animated:

just wanted to come on here to say that this album is really fun -- impressively diverse in style and tone, playful, catchy, generous.

wizzz! (amateurist), Tuesday, 10 November 2015 21:13 (ten years ago)

nah an 8.5 def codes as a dissapointment given the hype for this album. two weeks ago i was sure it wouldve been AOTY

There's an episode of On Cinema at the Cinema where Tim Heidecker says to Gregg Turkington: "surely you're not going to score this movie lower than five bags of popcorn?"

Gregg: "No, but I might take a few kernels out of each bag."

It's kind of how I imagine the editorial meeting at P4K went down for this review.

Position Position, Tuesday, 10 November 2015 21:33 (ten years ago)

who gives a shit how many #s pitchfork gives an album? why does this matter in the slightest to anyone?

wizzz! (amateurist), Tuesday, 10 November 2015 21:44 (ten years ago)

Ptichfork-etaboutit.

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 10 November 2015 21:58 (ten years ago)

anyone here not on board with this album? In theory I dig the new direction and perhaps even a few tracks, but this is doing nothing for me.

Van Horn Street, Tuesday, 10 November 2015 22:01 (ten years ago)

I'm not, mostly. Jessica's review is correct about noting the delightful sounds on this album, but they're discrete, and her voice doesn't force cohesion on the elements.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 10 November 2015 22:08 (ten years ago)

i'll keep trying for a bit but yeah not feeling it

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 10 November 2015 22:12 (ten years ago)

I'm slightly toward the "not" camp. I don't hate it but I don't find myself wanting to listen to it either.

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Tuesday, 10 November 2015 22:17 (ten years ago)

I was not really a fan at first listen, I was even annoyed by it... too many influences made it sound all over the place, but the more I listen to it the more it started sounding cohesive. I love albums that reveal new things with every listen. There's many ideas and nifty production tricks in here to love it. who knows how i'll feel about it in a month when the vinyl finally arrives (I still prefer Realiti demo and I hate that I wont get any version on vinyl since I already pre-ordered) but it's has had it's share of replay value for me.

I had the same reaction to Visions. It felt very different at the time from her previous albums and eps.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 10 November 2015 22:24 (ten years ago)

i'm not sure this album is really aiming for "cohesion," unless you simply mean some kind of formal cohesion w/ in each track.

wizzz! (amateurist), Tuesday, 10 November 2015 22:33 (ten years ago)

I meant that as a vocalist she should pull these cool sounds and melodies together, but its abrasive high end doesn't.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 10 November 2015 22:35 (ten years ago)

since my initial bleh reaction (apart from a few songs) i've been listening to it a few times a day and more of it is clicking. i can't help but think that i'll always prefer Visions, though, if only because Visions sounds like an album that only she could have made. it's tough for me to get as excited about art angels because it feels like her contribution to a universe that's already populated with other people's songs that use a similar sonic vocabulary.

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 10 November 2015 22:37 (ten years ago)

i enjoy the first half of it culminating with kill v maim, but then there's that madchester one and the william orbity one and my receptivity just shuts right off at that point

gabba cadaver (NickB), Tuesday, 10 November 2015 22:42 (ten years ago)

Was tired and stressed and feeling put-upon this morning, Art Angels in the earbuds just blew me out the WINDOW. Venus Fly! Kill V Maim! Just an incredible record I think. My attention wanders at times, but literally 2-3 lulls on an album packed with delirious highs.

MatthewK, Wednesday, 11 November 2015 01:05 (ten years ago)

there's really no reason to bring about the comparison but i think she definitely does a better 'polished' record than ariel pink

dynamicinterface, Wednesday, 11 November 2015 01:47 (ten years ago)

Ariel Pink does polished records?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 11 November 2015 08:12 (ten years ago)

before today and pom pom sound 10x more polished than this

cock chirea, Wednesday, 11 November 2015 08:19 (ten years ago)

yeah that's a p low bar

pep ponk aliyev (seandalai), Wednesday, 11 November 2015 08:30 (ten years ago)

Kill V Maim nodding to Crystal Castles, amirite?

MatthewK, Wednesday, 11 November 2015 11:36 (ten years ago)
