Just chiming in since I was very late to the party due to their horrible name, but what great songs and sound - both albums are very strong and "This Must Be My Dream" is perfect summer driving music. Love how they use 80s signifiers as a tool rather than pastiche (why I also love Haim).

all their videos are comically dismal, at best

comically dismal prob describes my #aesthetic but idk, I really enjoy how this one starts off as inland empire and ends with matty fucking himself

no yeah i think they're also quite uncompromisingly appropriate in their way

i think the "change of heart" video is legit good

"love me" & "the sound" are ridiculous verging on embarrassing in a way that perfectly nails their appeal

all of the videos are above and beyond the ones from the last album cycle, excepting maybe "robbers"

One of the comments on the youtube clip for "Somebody Else" is "I want someone to fuck me like Matty Healy fucks Matty Healy" and it's gotten more than 2000 replies of people saying "OMG same" etc. in about 17 hours.

This video basically narrativises in comi-tragic form the herculean levels of self-absorption signalled by all the previous clips the whole album. As far as I can tell the lyrics on the screen when he is singing karaoke are just "ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME".

"Ugh" probably the most boring clip but it's saved by Matt doing that little "reeling off" face/motion when he sings "Me and my things, my car, my living..."

"Girls" is a good video, it feels like a really pop video

They played a really fantastic show.

"Me" is still the best song ever for staring out at a city at night from a hotel room on a high floor while jetlagged.

It's such a shame that the NME jumped the shark years ago, this would have been a great moment to cite as the nail in the coffin if only the ship hadn't already sailed.

A worthy winner. Despite some obvious flaws with the all new NME (I've still not forgiven them for that Chris Moyles cover) this is the third year in a row that they've picked something brilliant as their album of the year (St Vincent in 2014 and Grimes last year). Just popped over to their Facebook page to see the reaction. Seems like a lot of Radiohead fans are not pleased.

I'd imagine fans of music wouldn't be pleased either.

Loving Someone took a long time to grow on me. I just wish the album ended at Paris. That's my only complaint about it.

i haven't read this whole thread but i assume consensus is you could easily carve 20ish minutes out of this thing and what you'd have left would be in contention for the year's best album?

nah it all feels pretty necessary to me

yeah it wouldn't be the same thing at all

like the sprawl gives it shape and narrative that it otherwise wouldn't have; if you cut it down it can become a pop album or a moody subterranean thing but that it manages to flow out of one form into the next and then back is why it's actually remarkable

I don't love every song, but agree that the sprawl is a necessary structure to cover the range the album has, just like the White Album
