this whole "event" is a crock. EVERY DAY is record store day.

Tomorrow at work we're gonna have a BBQ, give people 10% off, and free $0.50 records with purchase of other merchandise. also, we will have maybe just a few of the record store day exclusives--the matador & daptone jams, as well as the jesus lizard singles set.

what is the deal with these exclusives, are they really only available tomorrow?

i think they're available tomorrow and if they don't sell out will be available for a few days until they disappear? i don't think we're expected to return items that don't sell during the "event" tomorrow.

I decided not to bother with Record Store Day. I buy loads of records, in record stores, so I am not part of the problem.

I went into Rounder and Resident and Borderline in Brighton, but they were mostly oppressively full so I had to extricate myself. Also I had no money to spend. But yeah, good to see some interesting in-store stuff going on and people being reminded to use or lose.

I buy loads of records in thrift stores and garage sales, so maybe I am part of the problem. Usually they are way cheaper and more interesting in those places. But I'm still not partaking in this event today. Maybe that makes me lame. Independent stores deserve to survive, and I hope setting aside a special day for them pulls lots of young kids into the habit -- especially kids pointlessly addicted to getting music the day it comes out, a habit that has never made any sense to me. But braving the crowds seems silly. And I've never been somebody to buy records just because they're rare -- especially when they're created for the sole purpose of their rarity. Seems artificial to me somehow, and none of the records above strike me as all that inticing. (I thought something similar when baseball card companies got self-conscious about their collectibility, and it bugged me then, too. Not that it's especially anything new with record labels -- see also: SubPop Singles Club or whatever.) Anyway, more power to the stores -- whatever pulls in customers. I hope they all make tons of money. A friend of mine who runs a store in Philly said Record Store Day last year was his best day in years, and I hope this year he doesn't even better.

Just out of curiosity, though, what kind of exorbidant prices are those exclusive sucker-bait 7"s above going for?

I picked up the New Order and Stooges for $7.99 each, and the Camera Obscura for $6.99. This at Mad Platter in Riverside, CA.

Shit, they had the New Order? I just called Sonic Boom and Easy Street and neither of them have the New Order.

They must have had >10 there. I picked up the only Camera Obscura, tho.

I got both Sonic Youth singles for $5 each, the Def Jam 4LP for $15 (!!!), and then I also picked up a Kurt Vile LP on Mexican Summer since it was on sale. 12 bucks!

also got the Dengue Fever/Chicha Libre split single, 5 bucks as well.

if any kind soul wants to pick me up a copy of This LP Crashes Hard Drives I will reimburse you and sing your praises. Neither of my local stores had it.

Yeah...kinda my problem too. Looking at the list up there, and, Arthur Russell apart there's not a whole lot i would want - it's all very white and young. Thing is, I'd bet it's guys like me that spend most on records now - middle aged, not all that interested in new stuff necessarily. What killed going to record stores for me was the CD - I just never got that excited about buying them, so when Vinyl started appearing in quantities in charity shops, and then on the 'bay, that's where my purchasing went.

We had a really really great day at the shop I work at - loads of bands and artists playing all afternoon, loads of interest generated by the day itself and by the exclusive releases, most of which sold well. It was a wonderful party atmosphere and majorly busy all day long. Great fun and inspiring for our continued survival.

There were only a few times I absolutely had to have a particular RSD title, and I'm pretty sure all of those records can still be obtained on Discogs for pennies on the dollar

There was an RSD exclusive Philip Glass LP a few years ago that I missed out on which now rarely comes up on discogs. When it does, it goes for €200. Same thing could well happen with this PiL thing. Some RSD exclusive releases are insanely desirable.

Always find it weird that the individual RSD 'Alternate' Fleetwood Mac LPs are $$$ on discogs, but you can pick up the box-set containing all of them for about £100 (still too rich for my blood at the moment, but I loved those alternate versions when they were CD bonus discs 15 years ago)

Well I pushed thru my misgivings and arrived 5 mins before opening - spent an annoying 10 minutes waiting in a queue of people waiting for their special time with the magic stock and when I got to the front there was one copy of the Public Image LP for an only mildly annoying price. A successful operation that I hope never to experience again.

i never go stand in line, I did once in London because I was staying across the street from a Flashback and there were only a few people queued up. But I woke up early and decided to hit Amoeba in Berkeley 30 minutes before opening. Line to get in was huge but everyone got in fast, but it was a shit show trying to move around in there. I did get the one thing I really wanted (Lisa Germano's Geek the Girl, which, after surveying the people in line, I was quite confident I would have no problem picking up). Missed out on the PIL which was I was iffy on anyway, and tried to pick up the Pharoah Sanders but some dude snatched the last one literally two seconds before I could get my arm out. I spent more time standing in line to pay than I did to get in or looking for records.

Yeah early RSD lines are just full of dudes in hoodies that look like they can recite multiple family guy quotes. So many of them come out of the woodwork and stand in every RSD line for every store. None of them probably want Lisa Germano.

I've never bothered with RSD before what with anxiety and not going out. I've only bought a couple of new LPs this year so could afford these.

yeah I checked my local and they said they ordered a bunch of the Sanders but didn't get any, speculation was that the pressing was pointlessly small

I bought the CD version of the Pharoah record on Bandcamp. The PR materials are claiming it's never been on CD before, which is bullshit. There have been about eight CD editions going back to 1993. I used to have one on Charly from 1998 or so.

I love it. Was always baffled why it wasn't an Impulse! release (recorded January 1969, a month before Karma), but it was produced by Clifford Jordan instead of Bob Thiele, so maybe he did it without telling them? Strata-East didn't put it out until 1973, which was probably right around the time his Impulse! contract was winding down...

xp: it looks like the store owner is now trying to sell it off to the largest bidder in his instagram comments, with a promise to donate the proceeds to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

RSD will likely ban that shop from participating in the future (or not, dunno how hardcore they are on this stuff but this one got a lot of attention).

I was glad the Pharaoh Sanders one was also getting a CD release, mine just got shipped and I didn't have to deal with RSD hassle.

Stopped by my local the day after on my usual rounds and did pick up the MJ Lenderman live album and Sylvain Carel's Look Over the Nile on RidingEasy.

Auctioning off this unexpected "special" copy and then donating the proceeds to charity feels like a very different thing than deliberately ordering RSD stock to flip.

TBH not sure I see the controversy in whether a store owner wants to keep a copy of an RSD item, either.

I'm not into the whole RSD as a line-up festival or speculative collector event but will usually browse and pick up a thing every once in a while, either later in the day if I feel like it, or further down the road.

One of the local shops posted has their remainders from the exclusives listed online, including a copy of the PiL one, if anyone wants the link. I was visiting a smaller city out of town on Saturday and walked in at probably 4pm and there were about five copies left so I grabbed it.
