the swan & the lake album is gorgeous

in re: discussion of Spiritland somewhere upthread, what do you actually do at these listening club venues? Bring in a book, sit at the counter? Have drinks with your friends? Sit alone quietly enraptured? Having a hard time with the concept still...

Daniel_Rf, Monday, 19 December 2016 10:13 (seven years ago) link

sit and chat and have drinks. but i never went to the classic album things at spiritland, it was just a bar with a dj as far as i'm concerned. often the music is a point of conversation just because the soundsystem is so amazing.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Monday, 19 December 2016 10:37 (seven years ago) link

Agree with that. I've been there on a Sunday afternoon when there have been people sitting alone on laptops at the bar area near the entrance. The staff are really good as well.

Part 2 of Test Pressing review

Nice to see the Bendith record get a mention

groovypanda, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 22:54 (seven years ago) link

Jeez I'm gonna be pouring over both those testpressing lists for days

a but (brimstead), Thursday, 22 December 2016 01:43 (seven years ago) link

Bendith ended up on two lists. Pretty odd!

If you're looking for balearic, you might not want to listen to it. It's a nice little Welsh folk record.

afriendlypioneer, Thursday, 22 December 2016 15:37 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, it's a collaboration between Colorama (guys behind the awesome 'Hapus?') and Plu.

Moon has been repping for it quite a bit.

These two tracks are lovely:

Ha! Just seen that Nado's next release includes this fantastic Bendith cover of Love Song

groovypanda, Friday, 23 December 2016 22:30 (seven years ago) link

Yeah that was in that last Moonboots mix - really lovely track. I was wondering in the discussion upthread if it was the same artist, even though I'd seen him say that track was coming out on Aficionado.

If you're looking for balearic, you might not want to listen to it. It's a nice little Welsh folk record.

feel like this kind of thing is always included in balearic mixes.

Jose Padilla is live on Boiler Room right now with Young Marco and Daniele Baldelli due to follow, Padilla is playing less chilled than I expected but it is so good

digging through the test pressing end of year round-up - this album my merge is some really nice metheny-type noodling.

Dreamchimney MotW from Basso. Good luck id'ing this one as they're nearly all private pressings

looking forward to this. his mixes are always great.

Finally listening to Ritual Chants... the "beach" disc is pretty terrible. That stuff should have stayed in the crate. "Dance" is better so far but still a bit too out there for me.

skip, Tuesday, 10 January 2017 22:04 (seven years ago) link

Beach is probably the weaker disc but I wouldn't call it terrible.

As well as the all time classic New World (one of only 2 or 3 songs I already knew), it also has these gems on it:

interesting - not been to see a gig, or a theatre show, at the yard in ages and ages.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Thursday, 12 January 2017 07:45 (seven years ago) link

Man, these are fantastic. Almost 5 hours of music with Leo Mas' Best of Balearic 2016 selection over on Test Pressing's Mixcloud (spread over three parts).

Plenty of familiar tracks to folks on this thread but also loads of amazing tunes I hadn't heard before:

new Tornado Wallace record is real nice

ciderpress, Saturday, 4 February 2017 17:41 (seven years ago) link

oh yes it is! "today" and "voices" have been the early gems for me but actually most of the tracks are pretty alluring

I love how "Trance Encounters" seems to quote "Welcome To The Pleasuredome"

I have to say that this nu_balearic thing is really saturating my ears. They all sound the same and honestly they don't me give any emotion like a real balearic song. And all this nu_music is boring, like the mix above which apparently is a 2017 greatest hits: yawn.

M.C., Wednesday, 8 February 2017 08:22 (seven years ago) link

... 2016 greatest hits

M.C., Wednesday, 8 February 2017 08:23 (seven years ago) link

I'm enjoying this Tornado Wallace record but it takes a particular kind of barefacedness to make an album full of R2D2 beach bar vibes and ashram Toto shit like Voices and then call it LONELY PLANET.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 8 February 2017 08:55 (seven years ago) link

missed this last year but this ep, and particularly this track, is really amazing, deep cinematic electronic music, maybe a touch of carl craig or derrick may. no youtube unfortunately.

. They all sound the same and honestly they don't me give any emotion like a real balearic song

I don't know enough about nu-balearic to really say, but I can feel this also

I'm enjoying this Tornado Wallace record but it takes a particular kind of barefacedness

Ditto, music should have a bit of magic in it. The problem here is the low bar of this style is much less irritating than the lower end of other styles, so records which aren't that good get more of a pass. I like the inconsequential but it should be the magic of the leaf in the breeze, some of these are the leaf in the drawer

saer, Wednesday, 8 February 2017 14:02 (seven years ago) link

oh shit, so excited for new gaussian curve

dyl, Wednesday, 8 February 2017 17:08 (seven years ago) link

Ended up playing the first GC so much, always a joy to come back to it. That record is the epitome of a grower, first couple of listens went by like the breeze. But now...

Benylin Ascent (NickB), Wednesday, 8 February 2017 19:00 (seven years ago) link

Was only recently I noticed it had a big red cross on the front cover, has definitely worked for me as a curatve some days

Benylin Ascent (NickB), Wednesday, 8 February 2017 19:04 (seven years ago) link

hah, now that you mention it, i did recommend gaussian curve to a friend who was having a hard time after stressing too much about US politics. whether it helped or not remains to be seen

also looking forward to some amazing unreleased stuff that was on young marco's BiS mix that's supposed to be out on his label early this year

millmeister, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 11:58 (seven years ago) link

Gonna check this out but the host talks way too much and basically makes the show unlistenable a 2nd time. Wish he just did an air break every 20mins instead of every minute and a half.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 16:39 (seven years ago) link

It's a radio show. I guess I'm just reacting to all those faceless Soundcloud mixes out there.

millmeister, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 16:58 (seven years ago) link

It's interesting once but has no replay value. Maybe have an interview section and a 20-30min mix section. The constant chatter is distracting. Of course I complain about everything so…

I keep listening , btw, just expressing my preference.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 19:30 (seven years ago) link

I know what you're saying. I don't mind the chat however - must be my age.
