Was thinking the other day watching the (not very good) ''Thoroughly Modern Millie'' - at this point in time, the Lennonisms being aped here are older than McCartney's ''granny'' tropes, Millie's roaring-twenties nostalgia (also for then-still-living grannies) or the general Edwardian bicycle-built-for-two steez were in the mid-to-late-60s. Surely it will have to run out of steam eventually, right?

Indie / Rock ’n’ Roll bringers ‘Candidates’ are standing up to deliver uplifting songs, in a time when there is much noise – but not enough said!
It’s with great pleasure we’d like to announce a headline show at Roadmender on May 18th with the incredible, hugely exciting The Keepers joining us as main support! The brilliant high energy indie rockers Block 33 also join the night & the excellent Britpop inspired The Relights open up the night in style! We can’t wait to play this date and with a full line up of great #IndieRock #Britpop #BritRock #IndieMusic to enjoy, it’s a date you need to secure in the diary!
The band are – Steve Wells (Lead Vox/Rhythm Guitar), Jimi Cook (Lead Guitar), Paul Pugh (Bass), Neil Kenton (Drums) and Antony Baker (Keys).
With a mutual appreciation for hard hitting beats, rumbling bass, soaring guitars and meaningful words sung with passion, and a relatable vulnerability, these lads have quickly become a band with a fierce purpose, combining influences such as Oasis, The Verve, The Stone Roses, The Cribs et el. to put Indie Rock’n’Roll back where it belongs.
With a busy end to 2017 bringing plays on BBC Introducing: Northampton and 3 Counties for their debut single ‘A Better Way’, Candidates look forward to a big 2018 with new music coming and dates already confirmed at O2 Academy: Oxford (Supporting Space), Camden’s Dublin Castle and Fiddlers’ Elbow, Northampton Roadmender and festival slots at The Grey Dog Festival and The Unsigned Marquee at Tribfest!

GENRE:
Indie rock.
MEMBERS:
James Hope
BIO:
Growing up, the first band James Hope ever listened to was The Cranberries; being from an Irish family they were a big influence on him. As he entered his teens, the first album he bought was ‘Never Mind’ by Nirvana which he still listens to now. His favorite band of all time is Oasis. He loves the attitude, emotion and soul, particularly in their first three albums. James Hope started writing music at the age of 15 and joined a number of bands over his teens and early twenties. At home, his dad played a little bit of guitar and bought James one along with a library of Oasis chord books and he taught himself how to play from scratch. Bitten by the bug, he then also taught himself piano, bass and a little drums. After being forced in to taking singing lessons to avoid detentions in school, he stuck with it and rather learned to enjoy them! At 23 years old, he became rather disheartened by the state of the music scene and the issue of children from working class backgrounds losing access to music lessons and tuition in schools and decided that he needed to record his music and become a voice for those around him. Hailing from Leeds, he feels very passionately about the demise of opportunity for kids in his area and wants to redress this and be a social commentator for his community. His main influences are bands from the north of England especially those established Manchester bands of the 1980’s and 1990’s: Oasis, Stone Roses, James and so on. Harking back to his formative years, he also loves the melodies played by certain Irish bands such as The Pogues and The Cranberries. James’ lyrics reflect growing up in a working-class community in Leeds and the issues he’s faced in his own life. ‘Every lyric I have ever written means something to me and even if it doesn’t make sense to the listener there is a hidden meaning in there somewhere. I love this way of writing because it gets them to picture the story of my life which I’m trying to portray in my music. I also know many of my circumstances other people will have faced so it’s also relatable. James is currently working on his debut album and dates for gigs which will be announced soon.
‘The aim of this album is to inspire kids to pick up a guitar and start writing their own music and hopefully I can show them it’s still cool to be in a band.’ James Hope
TOUR DATES:
Coming soon

Local band The Harrington Blues back the Posh with new tune…
Darren Ferguson’s men have reached the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final and Peterborough United and they’ve teamed up with The Harrington Blues to bring you the official song for Wembley, ‘The Posh Have Got The Fire’, which is now available to download on Soundcloud.
The band approached the football club about the possibility of putting their track into production and the club have also produced a video for the song, which can be viewed below. Club Press Officer Phil Adlam told ESP – “The football club are very pleased to be working with The Harrington Blues. Not only are they a talented local band, but they are also big Posh fans.
“They are regulars at London Road and two of the band actually met at a Posh game, so when they approached us about a track they had written, we were very keen to hear it. Everyone at the club loves the song and I am sure that it will prove very popular with supporters.
“Reaching the final has captured the imagination of the city with over 16,000 tickets already sold and we believe this song will definitely resonate with supporters and tells the story of how the club came through that semi-final at Swindon. It is the band’s own take on a Billy Joel classic.”
Harrington-Blues-QV2A9849-(4)
Ben Gooch from The Harrington Blues said: “The inspiration for the song came from a football song the Rifles once did and our love of Posh. We wanted to do a football song without it being cheesy. We thought by telling a bit of a story, the fans could relate to it and it would be more appealing.
“We wanted a chorus that the fans could adopt and could be sung in the terraces. The video was good fun, it was strange being at an empty London Road and having a kick about. It’s brilliant, the club have been fully behind it – even Bob Symns popped down and was bopping away.
“It’s a great for us as a local band to be involved with the local team, particularly as we are all big fans. We’re hoping the fans will get on board. The thought of being at Wembley, seeing Posh lift that trophy and hearing 20,000 fans singing ‘Posh Have Got The Fire’ gets us just as excited as promotion at Hereford, Colchester and Old Trafford.”
The Harrington Blues are a 5 piece indie/Britpop band from Stamford/Peterborough. The lads have a strong local following and over the past year have played all over the country supporting some big names such as Ocean Colour Scene.
