Not challenging enough or some shite like that probably. A couple if their tunes came up in my Discover Weekly playlists. I dig them.

Why this is more of a "piffle" than 100 other things ilx takes seriously I don't really understand.

because it's watered-down motown/girl group stuff, and why listen to a tentative attempt at the Crystals?

Not raving but drooling (contenderizer), Sunday, 12 March 2017 20:08 (seven years ago) link

It doesn't really sound like an attempt at Motown but w/e nyro is way closer of a comparison

blonde redheads have more fun (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 12 March 2017 20:53 (seven years ago) link

There are '60s era melodic elements (and in the vocal harmonies) if you listen to all their songs. That doesn't give me, personally, any inclination to compare their music overall with big production '60s records. I guess if you do that, you would be inclined to characterize it as being watered down. I think their other guitar-based songs suggest some application of what I tend to think of as the Raincoats (or pick some other period band) template, though.

ehhh, superlatives generate responses. "my new favorite band" got me to listen to it, which i probably wouldn't otherwise have, but it also got other people to dismiss it as "piffle". overall i think in this case it was probably worth the superlative.

As far as post-Electralane harmonizing girl garage from London goes, I wish The Wharves got more attention. A bit like this, but less Brill more Fairport.

"Piffle" was a joke, fwiw. Sneaky response to LJ in the "Posts You Had Second Thoughts About" thread. Not that it matters now...

I'm really enjoying this record, but can someone explain the Gorky's comparisons upthread and in a few reviews? I don't hear the similarity--like at all.

Every single vocal melody they have sounds like Euros Childs wrote it

PaulTMA, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 17:07 (six years ago) link

I don't hear it, but they're certainly writing better songs than Mr. Childs has in the past couple decades.

coincidence. i was just listening to early grey this week

really nice

production reminds me a little of pains of being pure at heart's first album iirc

the new album is great. so varied and flowing very well. it is less indie than usual and more electronic and almost dance-orientated in places. there are even some jazzy vibes with flutes and stuff like in let it go. and there is a rap song as well. probably my album of the year (after one and a half listens).

New album's really enjoyable. Reminiscent of Saint Etienne circa 2000-2003 at times. From some of the publicity I thought they may have gone with an expensive techno production sheen but it's mostly got a great live feel.

everything, Tuesday, 17 December 2019 19:44 (four years ago) link

St Etienne? Really? That is a band I never got into at all though I really tried. Girl Ray have the better voices, the catchier tunes and the greater variety. They are simply much more musical, do you say that in English?

walking towards the sun since 2007 (alex in mainhattan), Tuesday, 17 December 2019 20:41 (four years ago) link

I hear the Saint Etienne comparison - specifically, the poised restraint of Good Humour. But there's the same set of influences - 60s pop, electronica, the dreamier end of 80s indie - just, triangulated in a different way.

Naturally I adore this, the vocals are lovely and remind me of Tracey Thorn a lot. The production is great too, really spacious and warm.
