LCD Soundsystem should be banned on the basis of that atrocious album cover alone. The music stinks, is completely irrelevant up to the point of self-charicture, and seeing critics hailing this has-been baffles me.

Guided By Voices - the songs are twice as long and half as good (tbh I dunno how hyped this really was, but let's open the thread up to all contenders regardless of hype level/EOY standings)

I tried listening to the War on Drugs album once and I had to check the album wasn't starting over at some point. Still can't remember any of the songs in there.

Lorde is the new Carly Rae Jepsen - "pop" music that non-professionals spit out after a single taste, but which critics will continue to ride for forever.

Xp that is sort of the point with WoD - it's aural valium for the inhibited and the terminally nostalgic.

I can't really diss it because I don't hate it at all but Yaeji seems overrated as hell to me. There's just not much going on musically and lyrically... every song seems she runs out of ideas and she just resorts to repeating words in the same monotonic voice.

Again, I don't hate it but I don't see what's so special about it either or why she's making it into so many EOY best songs lists.

Ok I'm done taking those out of my chest... I think... those are the ones frustrating me about their roaring approval.

i rate the yaeji EPs (2 isn't as good imo) but found it pretty easy to get burned out on her stuff. Not much replay value as there's not a whole lot of depth, ya

I still don't really get what everyone liked so much about Black Beatles. I don't hate it, just does nothing much for me.

I think this is the first Laurel Halo album I like mainly on the strength of Moontalk alone but yes... it's way too dependent on its own quirks and weirdness.

Fever Ray was also so-so for me. I like the knife and the first fever ray album a lot, so I thought for sure this would be one of my favorite albums of the year but alas it ended being one of the most dissapointing ones for me. It’s just so hard to sit through... even harder than ‘shaking the habitual’ and that’s saying something.

I can get past the hamfisted lyrics (either way lyrics has never been her strong point), but the textures and production are sort of uninteresting too, the middle of the album is specially boring or annoying and contains some of her worst songs ever (“this country” really wtf is up with that).

I don’t know... I guess it’s just alright in small doses but I don’t want ‘just alright’ from her.

Ok maybe the production isn’t uninteresting... but it’s too harsh and irritating more often than not. I get that maybe that was her intent with this particular album but I’m not a masochist, sorry.

the production mostly feels like lesser retreads of Silent Shout and the Fever Ray s/t, and the songwriting lacks the memorable melodies. the lyrics are a step down too - Silent Shout especially could be quite evocative but they're more hamfisted here and the BDSM subject matter of some of it is completely uninteresting to me

think dude had a pretty decent office job for a fair while before the band blew up so I'm not sure this is a big factor. latest album hasn't really landed for me like the previous ones though, could be a law of diminishing returns thing but I had (have) no issue with their complete lack of progression so idk

You’re right I take it back, heartbeats alone is one of the few sweet songs they have and it has some beautiful lines in there. The debut also has some stunning imagery... I’m just way too frustrated with this album.

xp that was me yeah. his solo album isn't groundbreaking or anything, but I liked it more than Getting Killed and think his voice works better in a more stripped-down setting. I have only listened to it once though (might rectify that on the walk I'm about to take)

Fiery Furnaces is a good call. I'd add Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Fivel is Glauque. Turns out I like a new indie-adjacent band every decade or so

there's always good bands you just need to find them, but i think that people right now are talking about bands that reach a certain level of old school pitchfork level hype

i first heard of geese in, naturally, a rough trade music quiz, in a round seemingly about new bands i'd never heard of. they ticked a lot of my No boxes straight away because i assumed they named themselves with swans in mind and they have terrible sleeve artwork.

i unapologetically enjoy Geese— their music reminds me (at turns) of various other groups, they utilize interesting time signatures in their songs, and Winter’s vocal phrasing is unique.

i also stopped listening to most indie-rock music made between approximately 2006-2021 or so, barring Low, so perhaps i would feel more cynical about them if that wasn’t the case. (i have, for example, never heard an Arcade Fire song ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )

I’m sure I have heard more Arcade Fire, but the only one I have knowingly heard is “Everything Now” because after I heard it playing at the gym I was curious to know which rock band thought sampling Francis Bebey would signal anything other than desperation.

Austin, there is a 77 board that is used for stuff posters don't want to be searchable by bosses/feds/partners etc. I never joined it, but since you're a regular poster I assume you could join if you asked. I don't get the sense that it's used as a burn book against posters not in the group.

I won't confirm it exists, but anyone who isn't on the ilxor/DoD Signal chat is a total loser.

There was a Slack at one point and it did cause some drama & hurt feelings on the board (I wasn't on it so don't know the details). I assume it was ended after that, but otoh obviously there's nothing inherently wrong with ilxors communicating with each other through other channels.

fwiw 77 is totally milquetoast these days — looking at it just now there are a couple of threads I hadn't even registered aren't on ILE — and doesn't have any meta-ilx threads that I can recall.

I would try and convince yourself not to be so paranoid about this one, Austin. There was never (to my knowledge) a burn book moment in 77– if anything it was more of a place where tuff boarders would sometimes get emo about their interior lives.

There was an awful channel on the Slack where one user was constantly fomenting “omg look at this sucky thing this poster posted” style stupidity and I let my feelings be known about the toxicity of such a thing and left. TBH I don’t even remember which user it was that was fomenting or their ILX name nor do I care to be reminded

And many weeks to Tim F I challenge you to listen to the rest of that horrible album lol. I worked on that one and had alarmist meetings with management and band members describing the new material as “legacy souring” and eventually was shut down about it all. Steve Mackey (rip) was the lone dissenter to my good faith crit, he lovingly told me “people have to learn from their mistakes, so stfu and score the string parts”

there are like one or two decent tracks on that album but it's mostly just incredibly bland with the worst lyrics you've ever heard. "chemistry" is the one i remember being completely and utterly baffling
