This is really naive I guess, but I don’t understand why someone like grimes can’t just release music on bandcamp under a pay what you want model. Then just tour a bunch of sold out 10,000 capacity clubs? I suppose it’s proooobably a bit more complicated than that.

It’s insane that this is a semi-common occurence in the music industry. Isn’t Grimes the biggest star on 4AD’s roster?

The National and Tune-Yards have both had albums with bigger American numbers, but yeah, she's up there.

I don't know why I limited that to US sales, because The National's apparently big everywhere.

Art Angels charted surprisingly low for how popular she is on YouTube, she gets very large amounts of views for an indie act there

She’s a more culturally significant figure than anyone involved in those other acts though. For the 4AD brand she has to be valuable.

Grimes has some passionate fans. I imagine if the National were to deliver some bad news about an upcoming album, their fans would just keep clapping along regardless.

Does 4AD have a history with coming into conflict w/ artists?

is there anything that makes people think it is her label specifically? maybe she is just fed up w an abusive industry as a whole

I mean the industry as a whole can't literally stop her from releasing music. Also she responded to someone who said it was because of "label/management reasons" with "no problems w management", so.

In a situation like this it's possible another label could buy her out of her contract.

I wonder if at this point in her career she'd prefer to be on a major or totally independent. You'd think the latter, but who knows?

this sucks for her. do think it might be worth paying attention to how many (or, cough, how few) of grimes' friends over the years still collaborate with her.

I wonder how many times in recent years labels have bounced things back at the artist saying the material they’re given isn’t what they want to release. It seems like things are a little looser now, but I’m guessing that’s kind of an illusion because not everyone wants to mention it in public

In any case she made it clear Roc Nation (whatever the name) has been supporting her and she seems very grateful for their presence in this moment. She's hinting problems might come from earlier in her youth, and knowing how rocky her relationship to Arbutus was, it might stem from that.
