Slow sounds better to me as time goes by. I liked it at the time, but it always seemed too slight to really grip me. Now it sounds like a classic. I got the 12" last year and played it over and over. It's perfect.

The video for Dancing has really elevated the song even though it really doesn't look like there was much of a budget at all. The clapping/finger snap combo leading up to the chorus is so great. She really sells it well. Shame there's absolutely no chance of this becoming a hit.

I mentioned to VegGrrl on fb that deep at the heart of this song there's a bit of Olivia Newton John, which is neither here nor there, but it makes me like it just a smidge more.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 3 February 2018 18:19 (seven years ago)

Slow is one of the best pop songs ever, the new one isn't.
it pains me to say it as a kylie fanboy, but its rather generic.

mark e, Saturday, 3 February 2018 19:10 (seven years ago)

i really like it!!!
that being said i do think it needs a bit more of...something for the chorus. the first verse feels like it’s building to something that never quite arrives
maybe a dance remix would help beef it up

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 3 February 2018 19:15 (seven years ago)

yeah chorus doesn't deliver, verse sounds like Miley

but what is up with these over-compressed vocals, sounds terrible!

niels, Saturday, 3 February 2018 19:46 (seven years ago)

I was gonna mention the Olivia Newton-John lilt to her voice but I thought maybe I was just imaginging it myself, its definitely there though

ooh i like!! the loop reminds me of Chaka Khan’s Aint Nobody (or maybe it is a direct sample?)
either way, here for it

So I'm probably the last person to learn this, but apparently she's not singing "shocked" here at 1'12, 2'00 and 2'46:

Nice list Alfred. Nice to see you mention the quality of some of her albums. Body Language, X and Aphrodite are all pretty underrated.

Would be great to see a Kylie poll on here one day.

i've been wanting to run one for ages

The new song "Magic" reminded me of another recent song I couldn't put my finger on until I read the YouTube comments and realized it was Katy Perry's "Chained to the Rhythm"

anyway it's not bad or anything but the similarity is a bit too much for me tbh

self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Thursday, 24 September 2020 11:34 (four years ago)

guess it's for the best that i struggle to remember what "chained to the rhythm" was like

think this is another great one

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 25 September 2020 15:48 (four years ago)

definitely not too similar to 'chained to the rhythm' for me. one thing about that song is that the lyrics sucked while these lyrics are great. i love everything about the new song. i loved 'say something' too. lol i didn't expect to like new kylie especially this year but like she is so so good at the highest form of generic disco pop it makes me want to cry.

Give me a Chad Smith-type feel (map), Friday, 25 September 2020 17:17 (four years ago)

wrt the katie perry song it represents a type of major-hit pop song that wants to look like it 'has something to say' but really just makes a virtue out of submission to the powers that be - i gag at that sort of thing. with these new kylie songs she just sounds so refreshed and focused on this goal of achieving pure dance pop transcendence it bowls me over completely. i'm buying it all lol. i didn't like 'golden' much.

she looks SO GOOD in that blue dress

Great album but I dunno if it's everything going on or what but it's going in one ear and out the other

self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Friday, 6 November 2020 05:00 (four years ago)

on first listen it's all just fine. no real duds but there's nothing really to elevate it and make me want to come back to it either

ufo, Friday, 6 November 2020 12:23 (four years ago)

the speed-up & solo in "dance floor darling" is quite cool though

ufo, Friday, 6 November 2020 12:27 (four years ago)

This set of tracks seems super generic but I'll give them a few tries. Maybe a few of them will start to pop.

... whoa @ "real groove"

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 6 November 2020 18:26 (four years ago)

^^ yes.

Between this album, Dua Lipa, Jessie Ware, and Kylie Minogue's, it's been a banner year for post-disco awesomeness.

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 6 November 2020 18:30 (four years ago)

This is a really likeable album. I don't see it sticking and some of the production is a bit Hype Machine Remixes 2008, but she's so endearing and charismatic even when it feels a little bland.

boxedjoy, Saturday, 7 November 2020 11:08 (four years ago)

^^ yes.

gonna assume you intended to write Roísín Murphy there. would make for a nice poll.

Feel like Sophie Ellis-Bextor could get those Instagram living room disco covers into an album we would be living through a total renaissance

boxedjoy, Saturday, 7 November 2020 11:18 (four years ago)

That unexpected tempo change on Dancefloor Darling is one of my favourite musical moments of the year.

Great album.
