This isn’t specifically about her, but really fuck passive agressive comments on social networks, if she has a problem with someone tell it to his/her face or involve the lawyers. Everything else is a low shot.

hon, you must be pretty naive if you think a purposeful enough face-to-face conversation is guaranteed to make a label exec see an artist's side or that filing a suit isn't still as costly for an independent artist as it is for everyone else (and perfectly capable of failing and/or further pissing off the label she's still signed to)
"abstract venting" is probably the only way she can inform fans/media about what's happening and take some sort of course of action without hurting her career or getting the lawyers sent after her herself

also i'm still reeling over the first post in here describing a visions cut as "electro-Frankie Valli"
like bitch what kind of shade are you trying to throw
― heliogabberlus, Saturday, 17 February 2018 08:39 (six years ago) link
tbh maybe she did say it to someone's face and it's gone nowhere and now she's venting a bit on twitter. no big deal. and no idea what happened, either. but i don't think she's a spineless type.

raging online about intractable situations w companies is a time-honoured tradition
― ogmor, Saturday, 17 February 2018 09:26 (six years ago) link
Also accusing people by name on the internet, if she doesnt have enough grounds to file suit, might not be the best idea and keeping it abstract would be the better option.

I mean, say what you want about Grimes' social media style, but while us greybeards are over here tutting in our armchairs or whatever, there's a teenager from Jakarta mailing a ripe piece of durian to 4ADs offices. They gave up being good when they declared a state of war, imo.
Also welcome to the convo, heliogabberlus. I think an early rock 'n' roll influence is very apparent in Oblivion although whether it's Frankie Valli could be up for debate. No shade.
― how's life, Saturday, 17 February 2018 11:02 (six years ago) link
Actually, I remember my first time listening to Visions and being confused that there wasn't more doo-wop. lol
― how's life, Saturday, 17 February 2018 11:21 (six years ago) link
i'll admit it's been a little while since i had a proper front-to-back listen, but the main reason the valli comparison struck me a certain way was, besides not being able to remember any sonic or compositional stuff that'd ever triggered an "ah yes, this makes me think of what i've heard of frankie valli", the main think i associate with valli is the... distinctive (which is a polite way of saying i'm frankly not a fan, but each to their own) voice
and that's never something i've thought of claire's vocal style being that close to. the video(?) meant to be embedded in the first post just shows up as a bunch of blank white space for me, and it's nearly 1 am so i can't be arsed googling what the "lead leak" was

if it's really as simple as 4AD bouncing it back to her because it's not what they want to release... that's fucking weird. maybe i have a different impression of grimes's position in the culture than is accurate, but i thought she was pretty much widely understood to be one of the most exciting artists working today, the sort of person who should be given wide latitude. it's not like art angels was an obvious follow up to what she was doing before -- she completely transformed her sound on that album and it was an immediate classic.
― treeship 2, Saturday, 17 February 2018 14:17 (six years ago) link
i think there's more to it than that, she'd tweeted about playing new music for the label and getting a positive reaction two months ago
― ufo, Saturday, 17 February 2018 14:22 (six years ago) link
an immediate classic
No. My hope is that her next album will mark at least a partial return to the sound of Visions.
― pomenitul, Saturday, 17 February 2018 14:25 (six years ago) link
i mean, that opinion is just objectively wrong
― treeship 2, Saturday, 17 February 2018 14:30 (six years ago) link
i wouldn't be disappointed if she went down either path or if she totally changed directions. i think the energy of art angels retrospectively puts the gloomier visions in a new light and improves it.
― treeship 2, Saturday, 17 February 2018 14:31 (six years ago) link
Meh, suit yourself. Art Angels was too upbeat for my taste.
― pomenitul, Saturday, 17 February 2018 14:32 (six years ago) link
hoping her sound gets even more extroverted just so chris ott feels more upset that she's not making halfaxa anymore

"Nightmusic" was and is peak Grimes for me
Label woes could mean anything. Sucks that Arbutus has the rights to release and re-release records that she doesn't want to have re-released. [Old label] refused to release my first two records to [new label] until the contract expired, and then when the contract expired, they summarily retracted the records from streaming services. Now they're nowhere. Sucks. I still love those guys and e-mail them on their birthdays tho
― flamboyant goon tie included, Saturday, 17 February 2018 15:33 (six years ago) link
I think "electro-Frankie Valli" is a pretty astute description of "Oblivion"--it's got some version of that struttin' beat you hear on early Four Seasons songs like "Big Girls Don't Cry" and "Walk Like A Man."

"hon, you must be pretty naive" is the worst way to start a discussion, if that's actually what you wanted to do.
anyway, i agree with thrust of moka's argument. grimes is great and i can't wait to hear the new album, but posting "ugh, the worst thing happened today, ugh ugh....but i can't tell you what's going on" or whatever on twitter is super annoying. it's somewhat annoying when some relative or acquaintance does it, but at least you could hypothetically reach out to that person privately and ask them if everything is ok. it's more annoying when a well-known musician does it because they're inviting everyone to blindly speculate on what's going on, knowing that no one will be able to figure out what's going on.
unsurprisingly, right after she posted all that, people immediately started speculating that it was her management's fault, or roc nation's fault, so she had to clarify that it wasn't anything to do with them. oooook, always fun to invite rampant speculation and then quash rumors in your replies.
none of it's a big deal or unforgivable or anything, it's just weird to pretend that she was forced to do it by the situation or whatever when there are a million other ways she could have let people know the general situation.
― i remember the corned beef of my childhood (Karl Malone), Saturday, 17 February 2018 17:06 (six years ago) link
counterpoint: it's really not annoying at all
― lowercase (eric), Saturday, 17 February 2018 17:07 (six years ago) link
Not forced, this is strategy. And a good one imo. I don’t know why y’all find it so annoying, just wait the record will come out somewhere eventually. I mean if it’s about putting pressure on 4AD - bingo! done
― flappy bird, Saturday, 17 February 2018 17:09 (six years ago) link
Tbh annoying might be if I was at the grocery store and out of nowhere grimes started venting to me in the produce aisle about vague problems with her record label (tho I'd probably listen intently!) but if that was the sort of thing that'd annoy me I just wouldn't follow her on twitter (not sure if I do or not I never check twitter.)

yea exactly... just unplug
― flappy bird, Saturday, 17 February 2018 17:11 (six years ago) link
maybe they could create a grimes_official account for updates about tour dates, upcoming releases, and hype
then claire could use her twitter account the way a lot of individuals do, to vent about work and make silly jokes

But I like drama
The problem I see about not dropping names or explaining what’s exactly happening but still inviting the fans to join the pity fest is that she has some rabid fans. The moment she posted that she invites the misguided justice hammer of the internet to go attack every possible suspect to the point she then had to post again with the “don’t do crimes for grimes” and that the J Roc label and Jay Z were cool and to stop attacking them, just to end deleting it all. She should know better than to summon te blind wrath of the internet... she has received serious death threats herself back in 2016... that’s how crazy some of her fans are.

because grimes, "girl with slightly grating voice who bounces back and forth from rap/r&b hookwoman to doing pc music stuff", "queen of going from call me maybe to indie pop all the gays like" and "girl from posonby who had a record deal since 12 who got big by implying black people were shallow and materialistic social commentary about alienation and luxury and followed that album up with a bunch of moody piano pop that got 91 on metacritic because she was white" all fall along the same artistic axis by virtue of making """""art pop """"", apparently
and by being women
