I can't tell any more who is genuinely outraged about all this and who is just ironically outraged

this is an indicator that it's time to listen to sonic youth

this is at least as bad as the time Kate Bush talked about Theresa May and became a "Tory" and even worse than when David Bowie was a Nazi.

She’s 30 now, the naive, immature cutey brand she had is getting closer to annoying, woman-child.

i know nothing about her other than that she didn't pay her musicians on some tour and a lot of people were angry, but it's hosted on blog.amandapalmer.net so i assume that's her

flappy bird, Tuesday, 22 May 2018 17:02 (six years ago) link

just gonna go ahead and say it

grimes was a very typical vancouverite (looks, attitude, and everything) who still never fully realized til she moved to a big city (hello los angeles) her anti-establishment/radical socialist ideas have no place in the modern world -- it's vancouver's and mayor gregor robertson's "greenest city"/vision vancouver ploy

now she doesn't really want to handle the consequences of her ideas if she goes through with them from a practical conclusion/view

I was hoping you’d say Montreal is responsible for her thoroughly unrealistic and unmodern politics. My disappointment knows no bounds; has Vancouver upended us?

I, too, believe unions are unmodern and unrealistic. No wonder Europeans are so fond of them, stuck as they are in the Old World.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 22 May 2018 18:03 (six years ago) link

while this whole thing is still so bizarre, it's not that surprising looking back 6 years ago when she was doing interviews for Visions and when journalists would ask her about her influences she'd say Mariah Carey, all these pop stars, instead of idk, Cabaret Voltaire or Warm Leatherette or something. that was shocking to me at the time. makes sense that she'd want to jump from 4AD to Columbia or something. and the idea that artists have to be "good people" or have "good politics" for one to be able to enjoy their work is absurd, art is not about the morality of the artist. will we get love songs written about/for elon musk? yes. will it matter if they bang like Oblivion or REALiTi or Flesh without Blood? No

flappy bird, Tuesday, 22 May 2018 18:03 (six years ago) link

You need to have lived in LA to understand it though xp.

there's like several novels-worth of ilx posts on this subject and personally i'd recommend not zooming out in this way

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Tuesday, 22 May 2018 18:07 (six years ago) link

she signed to Roc-a-Fella 4 years ago. besides occasional tweets about the Standing Rock or how much Stephen Harper sucked, her politics in practice have been obvious for a while. Jay-Z and Beyonce are capitalists - I think it just comes down to Elon Musk being goofy as fuck, really ugly, and his absurd and dangerous hatred of the color yellow. which are all legitimate reasons to hate Elon Musk and be upset that Grimes is dating him I suppose. but it's not her politics, it just seems like a total jump the shark moment aesthetically. the leap from Jay-Z's politics to Musk's is not that big at all.

xp true

Literally the only reasons to be the slightest bit aggrieved, upset or concerned about any of this is if
A) You were treating electro-pop musician/online person Grimes as a model for ethics under capitalism
B) You were hope she would blap you one day

Both of these things make you a fucking psycho and the FBI needs to have at least half the white men posting about Grimes on the internet on some sort of list

kids upset at grimes are just immature

and music attracts the most immature older people out of all the arts

part of the whole peter pan thing but it applies to music listeners as well

F# A# (∞), Tuesday, 22 May 2018 18:23 (six years ago) link

the kids I knew when I was a teen who looked up to musicians and artists as role models are doing some pretty great things in the world today and are pretty well-adjusted adults

that's not an mra thing per se, but goes back to the bible, i mean if you want to turn every conservative opinion into an mra opinion go ahead but it is misguided

This is true. All political relationships to artists are driven by unrequited lust.I always knew in my heart of hearts that Kanye would throw over Kim for me, which is why the whole maga thing was especially devastating.

Now... well, I'd still forgive him, but he'd have to write me a song or something to apologize.

carles danger maus (s.clover), Tuesday, 22 May 2018 18:34 (six years ago) link

xxxp they dumped their interest in all kinds of artists for pettier reasons!

I mean, it was the mid-90s and I remember overhearing some kids debating whether No Doubt were really part of the ska revival, or if getting pop radio play was an instant disqualifier, or if they'd drifted away from some weird genre purity test

kids that age are all about finding boundaries, edge cases to figure out where ideas and people fit in relation to each other and when someone they look to in their culture does something unexpected they have to go back to the drawing board and come up with a new picture

which is interesting because what sounds we like may differ from the artist's original intent

and in the politically driven and racially driven climate the u.s. is in, it creates this tension on who you should listen to and what it says about you as a person

I feel with the mention of Jay-Z we need to do a 'worst company: Tesla vs Tidal' poll.

yes nowhere else in the world or human history have people ever treated art as something social and related to their identity and place of being in the world, this is uniquely because america uniquely has this thing called "politics" you moron, you utter fucking fool.
