I mean, it was the mid-90s and I remember overhearing some kids debating whether No Doubt were really part of the ska revival, or if getting pop radio play was an instant disqualifier, or if they'd drifted away from some weird genre purity test

kids that age are all about finding boundaries, edge cases to figure out where ideas and people fit in relation to each other and when someone they look to in their culture does something unexpected they have to go back to the drawing board and come up with a new picture

I think the idea of artists being shaped by their cities is kinda exaggerated, especially in the era of internet/globalisation.

I find Whiney's position mystifying here -- Grimes is actively caping for a union-buster, fuck that, she gets to absorb some heat for that -- but find his Primus clip just delightful so it's a wash

Nothing worse than hipsters going 'arcade fire is so Montreal' when 6/7th of the band is from outside Ontario/the US and the other one is from a rich suburb outside the island.
