we rounded up a skilled team, brought our A game to drill down on core deliverables and put together actionable strategic staircase where the rubber meets the road

let's hear it for team infinity

I will give you ten guesses as to what "sketchy" is usually code for and the first nine don't count.

She said “it’s hella overcrowded, late, sketchy in most cities I’ve lived in” – you read “sketchy” as “full of poor people”?

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Wednesday, 23 May 2018 16:30 (six years ago) link

true, she could have meant "brown people"

based on my experience of Americans talking about buses, yes

"sketchy" is absolutely a code word

if y'all say so... Her next line was "[I've] been violently assualted on public transit twice", so I assumed that was what she meant. Reasonable ppl can disagree on whether the solution to public transport's ills are weird space-age tunnel cars, but I'm sure we've all learned to be aware of our surroundings on the train.

can we go back to arguing about whether the realiti demo is better

(the demo of realiti is better at least than actual reality)

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Wednesday, 23 May 2018 16:51 (six years ago) link

what exactly is Elon Musk’s solution to that age-old problem and how is it solved by undercutting public transport and forcing workers to operate in unsafe conditions?

gyac, Wednesday, 23 May 2018 16:51 (six years ago) link

Musk's public transit proposals are idiotic and specifically designed to undermine other, better thought-out and better-funded efforts already underway

the grimes song is about assault and also the way that she argues against public transit is to invoke assault, and the point of the tweet was to express that the author of the tweet had felt connected to grimes at first due to the resonance of the song but now feels horrified at the same sort of resonance being invoked in the service of attacking public transit.

how are people this bad at context and interpretation posting on a message board involves, ostensibly, the process of understanding artistic production

carles danger maus (s.clover), Wednesday, 23 May 2018 17:07 (six years ago) link

i understand that. the tweet is only not a non sequitir after like 5 steps of bad-faith readings into what she said. rather than dignify it with a charitable close-reading i chose the rhetorical maneuver of demonstrating its incoherence by removing all implications derived by aspersions about her motives. how are people this bad at context and interpretation posting on a message board involves, ostensibly, the process of understanding artistic production

grimes replyer: public transit is already safe and cheap

grimes: ive been assaulted twice on public transit, its very to get around LA without a car

left twitter guy: i, too, have been assaulted, and i like a song by grimes about assault. i am disappointed that [everything beyond this is from my imagination]

marcos, Wednesday, 23 May 2018 17:31 (six years ago) link

i have heard the use of sketchy to mean "dangerous" as opposed to "there are poor people around." i've seen woman manhandled on public transit in L.A., i know women who don't like riding public transit as a result of similar experiences. it often happens late at night, drunk dudes coming back from partying, people trying to grab someone in a crowded space and then peace out at the next stop, people grabbing purses, whatever. i myself don't feel unsafe but i'm not the usual type of target.

that article sums up the clusterfuck in this thread, but this:

releasing music from a slew of hyper-talented electro-pop musicians that would go on to define a certain ‘00s warehouse party, Montreal sound

uh, this is dumb

that warehouse party sound was happening in vancouver before it hit montreal

i know because i was there foolio!

kind of true tho, at least among one prob significant tranche of her fanbase. she joked about not wanting lessons in public marketing but she could prob get some extremely online friends to screen her tweets for her, like im not even that woke or on twitter that much but feel like i have a p good nose for what’s problematic on twitter, would’ve spotted this frainwreck from a mile away

Nerds @ing grimes to mansplain that she shouldn’t be attracted to her bf are beyond embarrassing - BEYOND beyond embarrassing - but also like, ppl make fun of ppl’s dumb Twitter opinions all the time? That’s kinda what Twitter is? And grimes correct me if I’m wrong is a twitter musician? dgmw I think those wounded by this are deranged but pretty much any celeb gobshite talking up Elton musk would get at least some of this flak (although by no means the greater part of it obv, this is mostly about creepy overidentification going sour)

xxp there are some Grimes fans who feel betrayed by all this for sure, but I always thought a big part of Grimes 'brand' was being the subject of memes and meta-humour by the Very Online, and the Musk thing just consolidates that if anything? (Musk is obviously also one of the significant 'characters' in Very Online memes and meta-humour which is why I think ppl are finding all of this so funny, like the divisions between funny tweets where and reality are breaking down?)
