my dad doesn't like boston, but whatever

My dad wasn't much of a rock fan, more a jazzbo, folk and classical guy, but he bought the Boston album because he heard there was a guy from MIT on it, and he thought that was hilarious. MIT guy in a rock and roll band! He ended up playing it tons and bought the follow up.

"Smoke on the Water" feels like ur-dad rock to me, I dunno this is kind of a lame list. Where's the Dead C? Now THAT's What I Call Dad Rock

is canonical 'dad rock' eternally late 70s/early 80s due to the boomer zeitgeist that still holds sway over this country or is it a timeless and malleable concept
― global tetrahedron, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 21:16 (six years ago) link
Until we kill the original boomer, yes

Honestly I think of today's dad rock as being more like Wilco.

What was the article I read where a not particularly old music writer (was it Petrusch?) played a bunch of music for teens and the teens though Black Flag sounded dad rock. That was awesome.

Imagine Dragons - RadioactiveTrying to get my head around the idea of this as Dadrock.
My parents are in their late 50s, early 60s. They both went to an Imagine Dragons concert a few years ago.
That being said, when I think of my dad I tend of think of Nights in White Satin by the Moody Blues, and that's not on here.
― MarkoP, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 21:24 (six years ago) link
Yes, British dads.
― Alan Alba (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 21:25 (six years ago) link
It's a UK comp.
I always tend to think of Bon Jovi more as "Mom Rock" than "Dad Rock".

Yeah Zeppelin only licenses their tunes to "Thor" movies now.
I hate to repeat myself, but it's a UK compilation.

― i’m still stanning (morrisp), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 21:32 (six years ago) link
There's no tradition of Classic Rock stations in the UK, and most of these were UK hit singles, Led Zeppelin never had any hit singles.
― Alan Alba (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 21:34 (six years ago) link
In fact I'm pretty sure all of these were hit singles.

my concept of Dad Rock based on my own dead Dad is Irish Showbands, The Wolfe Tones, Max Boyce tapes - all wrong probably!
― calzino, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 21:41 (six years ago) link
My dad overdid it on edibles at Red Rocks Dub Fest, got disoriented/zoned out, and had to call for a ride home. True story (that he's too embarrassed to talk about).

My (UK) dad likes Ry Cooder, Steve Earl, John Martyn, he would not enjoy this compilation, though I did hear him once complain that Smashy & Nicey had ruined 'You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet' so maybe there is a glimmer of something there.

Yes. When I started hearing the term dad rock Wilco was the headlining act. Dad rock was known to be that mellow adult alternative/indie sound that would often appeal to smart (dressed nicely) types because of difficult guitar playing.

i don't like the term "dad rock" on account of how gendered it islots of moms & grandmas & women who have not reproduced like these songs tooit's just a way of making fun of old people :(

Yeah, my own Dad wouldn't last five seconds into any of these songs. I mostly try to form conclusions from my observations of white Dads.

It's also in the title of the compilation album this poll is based on, so kind of hard to avoid using it?
― Alan Alba (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 23:26 (six years ago) link
i'm not accusing anyone of wrongdoing i just think it's a shitty term i don't care if you want to discuss this continuously for a year or even longer
the dads i know were mostly young punks so i guess i'd vote for the clash song (bonus if it segued directly into the BAD song)
― weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 23:28 (six years ago) link
Btw, I wasn't suggesting that it's impossible for older men to like Imagine Dragons. (It wouldn't surprise me if my fiancée's Mum listens to them fwiw.) I just doubt that's the primary demographic of their audience, which is what "Dadrock" implies to me.
― No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 23:35 (six years ago) link
I'm still sort of "gobsmacked" (if I'm using that properly) to learn that Led Zeppelin are not really popular in the UK...
― i’m still stanning (morrisp), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 23:47 (six years ago) link
Like even without the "Classic Rock" radio format -- they weren't popular at the time? As an "album band"?
― i’m still stanning (morrisp), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 23:49 (six years ago) link
As an album band of course, but the Now That's Blah Blah Blah comps are based on Top 40 singles afaik.

for a very long time, I have mulled over posting a TS: WFUV vs WFMU here, yet of course it would be no goddamn contest whatsoever on ILM. Notwithstanding sirius or Hot 97, that's what i listen to in the car. FUV is an excellent indicator of dad/ mom rock. It really is NO RAP OR HARD STUFF. once you come to terms with that, you hear Brandi Carlslie, The Record Company (truly hideously boring), and a constellation of very very correct triple A/neo classic rock that is deeply unfashionable, as well as the front rank of indie rock like Spoon, Arcade Fire and LCD and the most boring version of of the classic rock canon you can imagine …really anything that nice conscientious white people are supposed to like…BUT, aren't nice conscientious white folk supposed to listen to Kendrick and SZA? Maybe, but that's rap and R&B and that would freak out the listeners, who think that's all commercial crap…FUV plays the SHIT out of the Dap-Tone universe…black music is apparently okay when it is no longer innovating…I truly would be interested if any other ILMer in the NY area has anything to say about WFUV, which is absolutely indistinguishable from Sirius's Spectrum…
