The 2-part Miami Vice pilot would be my vote

As others have said, there is a lot to take in here. My first thought and only really complaint is that I don't really like what they've done with the intro. The way the second version went into Love Me was a moment and this time it doesn't quite work.

I was never keen on the acoustic ballads that closed ILIWYS as they always felt so out of place. I love that this time round they've really given the album the big ending it deserves. Mine gives me George Michael's Kissing A Fool vibes and I Couldn’t Be In Love More is an even better version of Versace On The Floor. Holy crap at I Always Wanna Die (Sometimes). That chorus is incredible. It's a kind of power ballad meets some Britpop album closer from the late 90s (I feel bad saying this, but I get Mansun vibes from his falsetto). There's so much great stuff here, but I'm coming back to those three songs right now.

the ballads could have worked to close ILIWYS but they just weren't as strong songs as the most of the album so it was an underwhelming ending. the closing trio on this one are fantastic though, if they want to do ballads then please more like those, or more like the synth ballads from the EPs which are still some of their best songs

Mansun mention otm, get kind of a Little Kix vibe from some of this

Has anyone said Her for the movie thing. That might work.

gman59, Wednesday, 28 November 2018 20:19 (seven years ago)

it's a little odd that this album's the real critical breakthrough when the last one was better and a bigger step up, but i guess that lead to more critics taking them seriously this time?

ufo, Thursday, 29 November 2018 06:14 (seven years ago)

^^ this has always been a thing, i think, although i also feel like i'm seeing it a bit more these days: critics, *very* generally speaking, really latching on to a great band approximately one album "late"

2 points up from their previous LP, so it checks out.

Holy Shit! I had absolutely no idea who Matty's parents were until reading that Pitchfork review.

groovypanda, Thursday, 29 November 2018 10:44 (seven years ago)

Definitely there will be critical reactions to this album that reflect critics belatedly putting aside their prima facie assumptions about this band too late to get published articles about the second album.

But I would go further and say that I don't even really feel like the second album was a "step up" in a strong sense. Perhaps it seemed like one relative to the first album's laser eighties pop focus. But this band's capacities and proclivities have been fairly well established since the IV ep at the latest. They're still trying to find ways to top "Me" and "fallingforyou".

Tim F, Thursday, 29 November 2018 11:16 (seven years ago)

Also I have decided that all the songs on this album that purportedly are about cheating ("TootimeX3", "Be My Mistake") are actually about heroin.

Tim F, Thursday, 29 November 2018 11:20 (seven years ago)

the second album was a big step up in every way from the debut - songwriting, production, ambition, musical range. the debut wasn't bad or anything but it was just very solid pop rock for the most part with only a few hints of the sort of range they'd displayed on the EPs, though that's understandable though since the EP tracks were written after the debut was. they'd definitely demonstrated what they were capable of between the EPs and debut but then fully delivered on that and more on ILIWYS

but i completely agree that they've still yet to top Me and fallingforyou at that particular thing, those were the tracks that initially hooked me on this band

ufo, Thursday, 29 November 2018 11:27 (seven years ago)

No you're right - I meant more that ILIWYS only seemed *surprising* if one ignored the EP material. I agree it's a much more ambitious album than the debut.

From Lennon to New Order, 90 percent of artists write about drugs. It's all they know besides pillow density at a Radisson vs Courtyard Marriott

Wow, if I didn't read that (weirdly short/incomplete?) Pitchfork review I don't think I would have picked up on the now blatantly obvious Joy Division nod in "Give Yourself a Try." Certainly when we devised that huge list of comparisons that came up discussing the last record I doubt any of us expected to see Joy Division added to the litany.

princess of hell (BradNelson), Thursday, 29 November 2018 19:59 (seven years ago)

*looks both ways and speaks in a low whisper* i chatted w matty a few weeks ago and he was pretty adamant that the album will be coming out when they say... i had asked him about roy hargrove and he said roy played on a song that will be on the next album, but i also got the sense that the album making process is very fluid and i wouldn't put a ton of stock in the way he's described that album in the press so far

J0rdan S., Thursday, 29 November 2018 20:32 (seven years ago)

oh yeah i don't actually expect to get the night bus 1975 record i want

i'm thrilled hargrove is on another 1975 song, that rules

i gotta ask: how is Matty as an interview?

alpine static, Thursday, 29 November 2018 21:06 (seven years ago)

I don't think anyone itt has interviewed him but there are like 20 matty interviews that have been published this week that can give you an idea

k3vin k., Thursday, 29 November 2018 21:15 (seven years ago)

oh I obviously don't read ignore me please

k3vin k., Thursday, 29 November 2018 21:15 (seven years ago)

i loved interviewing him way back in 2013. he had an infectious enthusiasm for everything that came up in our conversation. he's very smart but not very good at thinking about what he says before he says it lol

princess of hell (BradNelson), Thursday, 29 November 2018 21:15 (seven years ago)

man the joy division rip sailed past me somehow ... i think it's one of their more ingenuous lifts because the tone of the song is so different, good example of reinventing the familiar

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Thursday, 29 November 2018 22:09 (seven years ago)

pretty funny to be the one who's like 'pshh this is a blue nile bite' / 'holy shit that was joy division'
