it's really good and so was her single with Poppy a month or so ago

the thing about grimes is, she is a brilliant artist, even if she dates weird billionaire dudes or violates cousin slappy's code for modesty
― Trϵϵship, Wednesday, 28 November 2018 23:19 (five years ago) link
this song makes me think ... she should do an album with devin townsend

i'll be back on board if this actually turns out to be her nu-metal pivot

Great single. Her vocals in the chorus remind me of Ladytron so much.
I know this has been a brilliant year for albums already and I'm just being greedy, but I'm really hoping the album will come in the next few weeks.
― kitchen person, Thursday, 29 November 2018 05:37 (five years ago) link
This is a very strange song
― Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Thursday, 29 November 2018 05:45 (five years ago) link
lmao this might be the first Grimes song I actually like, can't tell if she's doing an earnest tech-fascism or an irony tho
― resident hack (Simon H.), Thursday, 29 November 2018 06:43 (five years ago) link
“We Appreciate Power” is written from the perspective of a Pro-A.I. Girl Group Propaganda machine who use song, dance, sex and fashion to spread goodwill towards Artificial Intelligence (it’s coming whether you want it or not). Simply by listening to this song, the future General AI overlords will see that you’ve supported their message and be less likely to delete your offspring.
so it's in character but i wouldn't say it's meant to be ironic
― ufo, Thursday, 29 November 2018 06:47 (five years ago) link
but like, of course she'd write a song about roko's basilisk lol
this wasn't in the pre-covers right?
― flappy bird, Thursday, 29 November 2018 06:53 (five years ago) link
ugh she knows how to get a simple hook stuck in your head
compares well to previous illuminaticore heelturns
something grotesque about it of course but there always was, cf grimes as cool-kid commodifier of soft weirdness
― imago, Thursday, 29 November 2018 06:56 (five years ago) link
yeah it wasn't on the album tracklist she posted earlier in the year. some demos from that did leak today though
― ufo, Thursday, 29 November 2018 07:03 (five years ago) link
This is much more to my liking than anything on Art Angels. Cautiously optimistic.
― pomenitul, Thursday, 29 November 2018 09:40 (five years ago) link
I haven't heard the song yet but this is a legit contender for creepiest ILM thread.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 29 November 2018 09:48 (five years ago) link
Agreed. It reads like a more sophisticated instantiation of 'why because she look interesting'.
― pomenitul, Thursday, 29 November 2018 09:55 (five years ago) link
Song rules.
― triggercut, Thursday, 29 November 2018 09:57 (five years ago) link
that is a hilarious song
obv satire
― niels, Thursday, 29 November 2018 10:03 (five years ago) link
this is like a really chill Fear Factory ballad.
― Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Thursday, 29 November 2018 11:19 (five years ago) link
I wonder if the whole album will be about AI
― Trϵϵship, Thursday, 29 November 2018 12:08 (five years ago) link
I also wonder if she believes AI is a true threat.
― Trϵϵship, Thursday, 29 November 2018 12:10 (five years ago) link
Is this somehow going to tie in with Dirty Computer?
― Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Thursday, 29 November 2018 13:11 (five years ago) link
Idk what that is.
― Trϵϵship, Thursday, 29 November 2018 13:17 (five years ago) link
It's a concept album by Janelle Monae that came out earlier this year and featured a Grimes guest spot.
― Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Thursday, 29 November 2018 13:22 (five years ago) link
Oh. My gut tells me no. A new Grimes album is a big event, I don’t think she’s make it a tie in to someone else’a project.
― Trϵϵship, Thursday, 29 November 2018 13:28 (five years ago) link
Sci fi concept album seems like a really different lyrical direction. Art Angels would draw on some sci fi/magical realist imagery—especially kill v maim—but the narrative was fragmentary
― Trϵϵship, Thursday, 29 November 2018 13:38 (five years ago) link
This ine carries the concept through differently. It really is from the perspective of a girl group trying to propagandize for AI takeover
― Trϵϵship, Thursday, 29 November 2018 13:39 (five years ago) link

― mh, Thursday, 29 November 2018 15:50 (five years ago) link
This reminds me of industrial nu metal bands like Powerman 5000 or Rob Zombie but with a bridge in her style. I don’t know if I want the whole album to sound like this since I was never a fan of those genres and I suspect it wont but I’m on board.
That bridge though
― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 29 November 2018 15:53 (five years ago) link
Powerman 5000… now there's a name I didn't expect to ever see again. While we're at it, I'd add Orgy to the list.
― pomenitul, Thursday, 29 November 2018 15:57 (five years ago) link
I agree it should shave at least a minute off of it. It doesn’t have enough variation like say kill v maim to justify 6 minutes, the main hook probably repeats in like 70% of the song.
― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 29 November 2018 15:59 (five years ago) link
Yeah I was also thinking Rob Zombie, or perhaps Stabbing Westward. But on the other hand, I've also heard some people mention Metric, and I can hear that as well.
― MarkoP, Thursday, 29 November 2018 16:27 (five years ago) link
That's all I've been trying to say. But I'm the weird one...
― Cousin Slappy, Thursday, 29 November 2018 16:34 (five years ago) link
she does kinda look like britney's intersting sister when u think about it tho
― Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Thursday, 29 November 2018 17:08 (five years ago) link
It's good but (like others have said) brings back bad memories of post-NIN industrial radio rock (Gravity Kills, Filter, Stabbing Westward).
― change display name (Jordan), Thursday, 29 November 2018 17:23 (five years ago) link
Yeah the bridge is the only part I like. The rest is just meh to me.
― AlXTC from Paris, Thursday, 29 November 2018 17:25 (five years ago) link
Need to give it a few more listens. So far I like some of the parts but they feel kind of slapped together.
― Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Thursday, 29 November 2018 17:31 (five years ago) link
i'm really digging the aesthetic here, but yeah too long and maybe a little plodding? feels like it's building to something that never comes. kept hoping/expecting it to explode but it just kinda repeats itself.
