I think the term "trolling" doesn't give her enough credit for a very self-aware (and pretty hilarious) post.

It's a joke, but it's a mid-season Black Mirror episode of joke. Or one I can see her making a lot better two years ago.

I almost never think about Grimes and I'm not really a fan, but the other day "Kill V. Maim" came on in a mix and it struck me as very emblematic of its time. I would definitely put it on an end-of-decade mix.

I've always looked at music criticism, reviews, message boards, etc. as a way of finding and rediscovering music without giving any weight at all to the opinions behind the writing. I kinda sift through the opinions for keywords or phrases that are suited to my taste or warn me that I probably won't be into the music being discussed. The idea that someone can interpret a song, or any art for that matter, and bludgeon everyone else with that interpretation seems pretty dickish. That said, I hope Grimes isn't dissected into oblivion by fans and critics alike. She's so damn likable, but even better than that she has interesting songs and you can actually dance to some of them. The ideas behind them are what stick out for me.― Cousin Slappy, Friday, March 16, 2012 11:34 AM (seven years ago) bookmarkflaglink

on a tangential note, should I check out Nicole Dollanganger’s music and catch her live show? noticed she’s playing her locally pretty soon and I know Grimes has boosted her

It's not her I have an issue with at all. We actually share a ton in common, especially when it comes to dating and being openly hypocritical. It's her disugsting fans that make my skin crawl. The way you guys infantalize this grown woman is an assault on my senses. Grimes is a-ok in my book.
― Cousin Slappy, Monday, 19 August 2019 17:35 (five years ago)

So... video is cool, that neoclassical aesthetic is overdone at this point but I’ll always love it. It’s sprinkled with some k-pop vibe which fits her I suppose.
Production is good but the “i like it like that” is mixed in a way that stands out too much and it’s kind of jarring, it’s a stupid hook too but it’s catchy. It’s weird that the more she improves her production techniques, the more generic she sounds to me.
The common link between We appreciate power and this one is the chorus overstays its welcome, it’s repeated until it feels drilled into your brain. I don’t remember her previous chorus being as repetitive as these past two, or maybe there were more ideas thrown in that made me not notice it.
― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 5 September 2019 07:20 (five years ago)
I kinda liked WAP but this seems to be not good.
― Simon H., Thursday, 5 September 2019 07:34 (five years ago)
Both 'We Appreciate Power' and this are more palatable to my ears than 90% of Art Angels, so a modicum of cautious optimism is in order. I do agree with Moka that the choruses are insolently repetitive but that was already true of 'Oblivion', wasn't it?
― pomenitul, Thursday, 5 September 2019 08:25 (five years ago)
it's ok but mostly leaves me feeling like she can do a lot better. the vocal melody is nice enough but her vocals are even more indistinct than usual and don't seem to quite fit with the backing track which is very bland and anonymous (blaming i_o for this), so there's not a lot to actually grab onto. if this track were on art angels (songwriting-wise it would have been right at home, it's just the production lets it down) it would have been much more densely packed with hooks
― ufo, Thursday, 5 September 2019 08:47 (five years ago)
i guess a positive is i can barely make out anything she's saying so i have no idea if the lyrics are as silly as "we appreciate power"
