it made me think of battles

― J0rdan S., Thursday, 22 August 2019 19:33 (seven years ago)

oh man i dont like this at all.

― big city slam (Spottie), Thursday, 22 August 2019 20:10 (seven years ago)

why are they trying to sound like jet?

― big city slam (Spottie), Thursday, 22 August 2019 20:11 (seven years ago)

someone else compared it to refused and i think it’s somewhere between that and “song 2.” it extremely rules imo but i get why this would be radioactive to others

― american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 22 August 2019 20:47 (seven years ago)

vocals kinda remind me of glassjaw

― diamonddave85 (diamonddave85), Thursday, 22 August 2019 20:54 (seven years ago)

not really into this, probably the first time the idea that this band can do pretty much anything hasn't worked out for me

― ufo, Thursday, 22 August 2019 23:00 (seven years ago)

This sounds like Refused covering a Queens of the Stone Age song, which... I guess it could be worse as someone who grew up on Refused, QOTSA, Manson and "Song 2" — but not too long ago, Matty talking about this being their nighttime album, inspired by Burial and The Streets, stuff like that... so who really knows anything anymore?

― ilxor, Thursday, 22 August 2019 23:01 (seven years ago)

Sounds like XTRMNTR era PRML SCRM to me.

― piscesx, Thursday, 22 August 2019 23:02 (seven years ago)

would probably like it a lot if it did sound like XTRMNTR to me

― ufo, Thursday, 22 August 2019 23:08 (seven years ago)

this song has returned us to the roots of this thread.... everyone throwing out highbrow/lowbrow comparisons that build out a compelling constellation of influences

― J0rdan S., Thursday, 22 August 2019 23:13 (seven years ago)

I do miss the 3rd Eye Blind phase of this band :)

― big city slam (Spottie), Thursday, 22 August 2019 23:17 (seven years ago)

This song sounds like Gregorian chants spliced with ZZ Top

― self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Thursday, 22 August 2019 23:18 (seven years ago)

Every first single this band has put out has surprised me. This one might be the most out there, and I wouldn't say I like it a lot, but I can't help but love this band for continually making music that's further and further out of what I expect. In any case, video is great

― Vinnie, Thursday, 22 August 2019 23:20 (seven years ago)

Go figure, I like the song better without the video playing at the same time.

― ilxor, Friday, 23 August 2019 00:21 (seven years ago)

this is...not what I was expecting

― k3vin k., Friday, 23 August 2019 00:41 (seven years ago)

hahaha haven't heard this but Battles, Refused, QOTSA are bands I would have bet a large amount of money would have never come up in this thread

― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 23 August 2019 01:59 (seven years ago)

huh wow....this is unexpected. too bad Buddyhead isn't around to write about this

― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 23 August 2019 02:02 (seven years ago)

can't believe this is them

― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 23 August 2019 02:11 (seven years ago)

It's like they sat down and asked, ok, which bands have we *not* been compared to before? And then decided to sound like that.

― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 23 August 2019 02:20 (seven years ago)

Still waiting for their song that sounds like Jute Gyte.

― MarkoP, Friday, 23 August 2019 04:26 (seven years ago)

huh wow....this is unexpected. too bad Buddyhead isn't around to write about this

I forget who said on Twitter that this is totally Icarus Line but they were right.

― Ned Raggett, Friday, 23 August 2019 04:27 (seven years ago)

That's a fair comparison all the way down to Joe Cardamone's hair.

― ilxor, Friday, 23 August 2019 04:47 (seven years ago)

Not including their debut album, their lead single has always been their rock album opener:

Love Me > People > Give Yourself A Try

― self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Friday, 23 August 2019 04:50 (seven years ago)

the comparisons that make the most sense to me are Refused and The Vines

expecting this is probably going to be their Melon Collie where they take the eclecticism to a ridiculous extreme and it's too long for its own good but the highs will be somehow worth it

― ufo, Friday, 23 August 2019 11:35 (seven years ago)

I love how they've gone all in with the black hair in the video because this is supposed to be a rock video, kinda like the Beastie Boys going all-in with moustaches in Sabotage because it was supposed to be 70s-themed.

― cpl593H, Friday, 23 August 2019 13:12 (seven years ago)

Would have been better if the 1975 went all-in with mustaches instead.

― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 23 August 2019 13:15 (seven years ago)

I definitely definitely definitely think everyone should listen to the song 3-5 times before watching the video. (the video is awesome tho)

― alpine static, Friday, 23 August 2019 16:23 (seven years ago)

this song is kinda great, def seems like 1975 to me albeit a bit rougher; the drum production, the hook ... feels very intuitive to me, as well as the fact that they're nothing if not cagey and sorta feel like grunge in 2019 is to sophistipop in 2015 or w/e so again, not surprising. lol this is the best band. matty has the best rock voice of ... anyone post cobain? is that a crazy statement?

― Vapor waif (uptown churl), Friday, 23 August 2019 17:00 (seven years ago)

it is crazy, but it is an amusing thought!

― cpl593H, Friday, 23 August 2019 17:19 (seven years ago)

How many more singles and pre-release drops are we gonna get before the Feb release date, jeezus

― self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Friday, 23 August 2019 17:22 (seven years ago)

gonna guess at least 6 more singles lol

― Simon H., Friday, 23 August 2019 17:36 (seven years ago)

it will be 22 tracks long so 14 would still be new by release date.

― cpl593H, Friday, 23 August 2019 17:46 (seven years ago)

I don’t really listen to a lot of this kind of music but future of the left was the first thing I thought of

I’m sure I’ll end up loving this song

― k3vin k., Friday, 23 August 2019 18:28 (seven years ago)

The hook that drew me in was “we don’t go outside so bring everything here”

― Vapor waif (uptown churl), Friday, 23 August 2019 21:54 (seven years ago)

Wow,was not expecting this but do like it.

― Bee OK, Friday, 23 August 2019 23:22 (seven years ago)

I would have loved to do an experiment where you all heard it not knowing it was the 1975 have a gut feeling on the results

― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 24 August 2019 00:10 (seven years ago)

i hope they do some proggy metal shit

― ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Saturday, 24 August 2019 07:48 (seven years ago)

― Mark G, Saturday, 24 August 2019 11:39 (seven years ago)

Omg this new song is so terrible it’s hilarious to see stans trying to defend it as a song.

― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 24 August 2019 22:31 (seven years ago)

i remain firm in my belief that this song is incredibly good

― american bradass (BradNelson), Sunday, 25 August 2019 18:30 (seven years ago)

i continue to not get this band but i am fully in favour of popular music sounding uglier

― devvvine, Sunday, 25 August 2019 18:49 (seven years ago)

I like the song, but only by the standard that it makes me feel things again so ymmv

― ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Sunday, 25 August 2019 21:06 (seven years ago)

Next single to be simultaneous Tool and Taylor Swift tribute, goes number one in ten countries.

― Ned Raggett, Sunday, 25 August 2019 21:14 (seven years ago)

i remain firm in my belief that this song is incredibly good

I stand by this.
