I do miss the 3rd Eye Blind phase of this band :)

This song sounds like Gregorian chants spliced with ZZ Top
― self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Thursday, 22 August 2019 23:18 (five years ago) link
Every first single this band has put out has surprised me. This one might be the most out there, and I wouldn't say I like it a lot, but I can't help but love this band for continually making music that's further and further out of what I expect. In any case, video is great
― Vinnie, Thursday, 22 August 2019 23:20 (five years ago) link
Go figure, I like the song better without the video playing at the same time.
― ilxor, Friday, 23 August 2019 00:21 (five years ago) link
this is...not what I was expecting
― k3vin k., Friday, 23 August 2019 00:41 (five years ago) link
hahaha haven't heard this but Battles, Refused, QOTSA are bands I would have bet a large amount of money would have never come up in this thread
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 23 August 2019 01:59 (five years ago) link
huh wow....this is unexpected. too bad Buddyhead isn't around to write about this
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 23 August 2019 02:02 (five years ago) link
can't believe this is them
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 23 August 2019 02:11 (five years ago) link
It's like they sat down and asked, ok, which bands have we *not* been compared to before? And then decided to sound like that.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 23 August 2019 02:20 (five years ago) link
Still waiting for their song that sounds like Jute Gyte.
― MarkoP, Friday, 23 August 2019 04:26 (five years ago) link
I forget who said on Twitter that this is totally Icarus Line but they were right.
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 23 August 2019 04:27 (five years ago) link
That's a fair comparison all the way down to Joe Cardamone's hair.
― ilxor, Friday, 23 August 2019 04:47 (five years ago) link
Not including their debut album, their lead single has always been their rock album opener:
Love Me > People > Give Yourself A Try
― self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Friday, 23 August 2019 04:50 (five years ago) link
the comparisons that make the most sense to me are Refused and The Vines
expecting this is probably going to be their Melon Collie where they take the eclecticism to a ridiculous extreme and it's too long for its own good but the highs will be somehow worth it
― ufo, Friday, 23 August 2019 11:35 (five years ago) link
I love how they've gone all in with the black hair in the video because this is supposed to be a rock video, kinda like the Beastie Boys going all-in with moustaches in Sabotage because it was supposed to be 70s-themed.
― cpl593H, Friday, 23 August 2019 13:12 (five years ago) link
Would have been better if the 1975 went all-in with mustaches instead.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 23 August 2019 13:15 (five years ago) link
I definitely definitely definitely think everyone should listen to the song 3-5 times before watching the video. (the video is awesome tho)
― alpine static, Friday, 23 August 2019 16:23 (five years ago) link
this song is kinda great, def seems like 1975 to me albeit a bit rougher; the drum production, the hook ... feels very intuitive to me, as well as the fact that they're nothing if not cagey and sorta feel like grunge in 2019 is to sophistipop in 2015 or w/e so again, not surprising. lol this is the best band. matty has the best rock voice of ... anyone post cobain? is that a crazy statement?
― Vapor waif (uptown churl), Friday, 23 August 2019 17:00 (five years ago) link
it is crazy, but it is an amusing thought!
― cpl593H, Friday, 23 August 2019 17:19 (five years ago) link
How many more singles and pre-release drops are we gonna get before the Feb release date, jeezus
― self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Friday, 23 August 2019 17:22 (five years ago) link
gonna guess at least 6 more singles lol
― Simon H., Friday, 23 August 2019 17:36 (five years ago) link
it will be 22 tracks long so 14 would still be new by release date.
― cpl593H, Friday, 23 August 2019 17:46 (five years ago) link
I don’t really listen to a lot of this kind of music but future of the left was the first thing I thought of
I’m sure I’ll end up loving this song
― k3vin k., Friday, 23 August 2019 18:28 (five years ago) link
The hook that drew me in was “we don’t go outside so bring everything here”
― Vapor waif (uptown churl), Friday, 23 August 2019 21:54 (five years ago) link
Wow,was not expecting this but do like it.
― Bee OK, Friday, 23 August 2019 23:22 (five years ago) link
I would have loved to do an experiment where you all heard it not knowing it was the 1975 have a gut feeling on the results

Omg this new song is so terrible it’s hilarious to see stans trying to defend it as a song.
― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 24 August 2019 22:31 (five years ago) link
i remain firm in my belief that this song is incredibly good
― american bradass (BradNelson), Sunday, 25 August 2019 18:30 (five years ago) link
i continue to not get this band but i am fully in favour of popular music sounding uglier
― devvvine, Sunday, 25 August 2019 18:49 (five years ago) link
I like the song, but only by the standard that it makes me feel things again so ymmv

just saw them live
best band in the world!!!
― ufo, Sunday, 22 September 2019 12:13 (five years ago) link
a bunch of thoughts:
-still not entirely sold on "people" but it worked ok live-saw at least three rainbow flags people brought specifically to wave during "if i believe you" presumably for the lesbian kiss line, which, lol (i mean that in a good way)-"if i believe you" incidentally was a real highlight, they jammed on the outro for a while -they played an unreleased instrumental called "depth" which was very much in the vein of the iliyws title track except much shorter-"i always wanna die" needs to be their main set closer forever-there were technical problems for a few minutes before "sincerity is scary" but matty refused to banter with the crowd "on principle" because it wasn't the place in the set for him to do that -matty was a much better live vocalist than i remember him being when i saw them just before iliwys came out, some quite impressive moments like on "i couldn't be more in love"-kinda wish there were a few more deep cuts/a different EP cut to "you" which they played last time they were here (i know "undo" has been on setlists occasionally over the last few years, would have liked to see that) but the ones we got were fantastic anyway-matty struggled to remember which EP "you" was from lol-i have never seen a more enthusiastic crowd in my life-no rome was a very good opener, it's funny how he's working in a very similar space to the 1975 but much more both alt-r&b and emo, though not usually both at once-best band in the world!!!!
― ufo, Sunday, 22 September 2019 12:50 (five years ago) link
oh how'd i forget matty's floral skirt (no "paris" to go with it though)
― ufo, Monday, 23 September 2019 00:51 (five years ago) link
Crowds for them are incredible, best I've ever seen, or very near the top.
I saw them once for this tour and once for the ILWYS. He seems so much more at ease in this tour.
That "Sex" finale, I hadn't seen any youtube recording of any sort previously, it blew my mind and left me so pumped. When it ended, the only thing I wanted to do was to go to another show of the 1975.

that's correct. they're premiering "frail state of mind"
― american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 21 October 2019 17:57 (four years ago) link
accurate description of me whenever this band makes me wait for something
― self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Monday, 21 October 2019 17:59 (four years ago) link
Whenever I put "People" on I feel this compulsion to enable the repeat single track setting and it's really destroying my last.fm stats.
― cpl593H, Monday, 21 October 2019 18:01 (four years ago) link
"frail state of mind" is supposed to be their attempt at 2-step according to a recent interview, looking forward to this
