in addition to Sheena Ringo (who i wrote a little bit about here: Best albums (and tracks) of YOUR favourite albums (and tracks) of the ENTIRE NOUGHTIES: 2000-2009 Ballot Poll Nominations + Campaigning Thread) i wanna campaign for a few more things
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbiSxunJatMPerfume's "Polyrhythm" is one of the most thrilling pop songs i've ever heard, its polyrhythmic breakdown never gets old. would be a wonderful pop song even without all the rhythmic tricks but those take it to an even higher level.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppSAGtNQcfYCymbals Eat Guitars's Why There Are Mountains is one of my favourite rock albums. reminiscent of the proggier/structurally weirder end of pavement etc. but still relentlessly catchy and with electric piano, vibraphone, organ and trumpet all over the place which softens the sound a little and certainly helps it to stand out from its 90s influences. easily the best thing to come out of that whole late 00s/early 10s wave of 90s revivalism.

thanks for doing this imago/seandalai! just spotted a typo in the albums list: Stars - Set Yourself Fire should be Stars - Set Yourself on Fire
got my albums down to a top 100 and I'm wiped out. Don't even know how I'm going to cut it in half - the 00s were a brutal time for me and a bunch of these records literally saved my life.

I noticed that in the track noms, Björk's name is written both as "Björk" and as "Bjork", without the umlaut. I have a habit of correcting missing umlauts, but if I vote for, say, "Pagan Poetry" as Björk and not as "Bjork", will it mess the voting automation?
― Tuomas, Monday, 23 September 2019 06:23 (five years ago) link
It definitely risks the result not being noticed, especially if people have already voted for it in the 'wrong' spelling. Keep it as it is and if it places I'll make sure it's spelt properly in the rollout.
As for Pastebin, I'll see if the tracks and albums can be c&p'd into a Pastebin later (perhaps someone who's at home on a computer could also try this?)

one might argue that when a track is remixed, it is no longer itself. also a 'divorced' approach celebrates remixes as discrete entities, of which several are in the top 100 under their own steam! i've asked seandalai to send the version of the rundown with remixes separated and i'll make a decision based on what you all say here + my gut instinct...
― imago, Sunday, 13 October 2019 13:59 (five years ago) link

― nashwan, Sunday, 13 October 2019 14:22 (five years ago) link
why wouldn't we combine remixes? we do during the EOY polls, and it gives a disadvantage to tracks that have a popular remix or more than one remix.

― gyac, Sunday, 13 October 2019 14:30 (five years ago) link
you cannot perform the same track twice but remixing is not the same as sampling, keeping the title is a choice to maintain the link the original, & it's ilx convention

― imago, Sunday, 13 October 2019 14:59 (five years ago) link
covers don't usually function in the same way (never heard of a cover version included on a single) so I can't imagine it being an issue, but if there was a case where the cover version did come out immediately and was v much part of the same thing (a la mike flowers pops or frankee f u right back or whatever) and there was real split enthusiasm then sure, bundle them together. has anyone ever voted for an original and a remix? ofc no one thought you had to. splitting them serves no practical purpose other than making them less likely to show up.

― flopsy bird (voodoo chili), Sunday, 13 October 2019 15:02 (five years ago) link
has anyone ever voted for an original and a remix?
Perhaps not but e.g. I didn't consider voting for "Everything in Its Right Place" bc the nominated track was a remix (that came out 9 years later than the original). The Aphex Twin remix of "Heroes" does work pretty differently from the original track. I can easily think of cover songs that are more faithful. It's not at all obvious to me that imago's original impulse was wrong.
― All along there is the sound of feedback (Sund4r), Sunday, 13 October 2019 15:08 (five years ago) link
the faithfulness of covers is not the issue. I think once a track is nominated you should be able to vote for whichever version you like and in the rollout the most popular version should be listed with a breakdown of votes for other versions. having the same song showing up twice would be stupid, in practice tho they're just less likely to appear
― ogmor, Sunday, 13 October 2019 15:12 (five years ago) link
Covers are the same song but not the same track. Remixes are not necessarily either, although they do use recorded material from the original track.xp
― All along there is the sound of feedback (Sund4r), Sunday, 13 October 2019 15:13 (five years ago) link
I'm fine either way but I don't see why the rule should be changed at this point.
― All along there is the sound of feedback (Sund4r), Sunday, 13 October 2019 15:17 (five years ago) link
although I actually like "Mr. Brightside" so maybe we should combine them and give an extra vote to "Everything".
― All along there is the sound of feedback (Sund4r), Sunday, 13 October 2019 15:18 (five years ago) link
i think trying to carefully preserve the integrity of the ideal object doesn't acknowledge how music functions. all sound is queer. i want to specifically vote for a milli as played through my old desktop pc speakers

― Thank You (Fattekin Mice Elf Control Again) (Noel Emits), Sunday, 13 October 2019 16:48 (five years ago) link
I think they should be rcounted separately, but the merge and show numbers approach is a good compromise.
― beard papa, Sunday, 13 October 2019 16:54 (five years ago) link
OKAY
a decision has been reached, albeit a painful one
We will go by ILX convention and merge numbers
the pros very slightly outweigh the cons
believe me, I wanted to throw this convention in the trash as (having listened to one of the potential casualties) the remix was absolutely nothing like the original, but when it came down to it, the fact I hadn't specified beforehand that remixes would be counted separately was the clincher
we will hopefully begin rollouts tomorrow, with maybe even a few tonight if tt's ready...

(never heard of a cover version included on a single) I can immediately think of three examplesalthough I’m opposed to any Lu Contless version of Mr Brightside placing, merging and noting is the least damaging option given the lack of clarity. iirc the Friendly Fires version of Paris wasn’t nominated, so we’ll be spared that particular travesty of merging
― now let's play big lunch take little lunch (sic), Sunday, 13 October 2019 17:42 (five years ago) link
I probably won't read an article with that title but it is possible to recognize the mutability and subjectivity of sonic experience (and to have taught remixing for a few years) and still think that remixes should be recognized as distinct pieces of work in their own right. No beef with imago's decision, though.
