Emeralds - What Happened?
well worth your time if you dig floaty space synth action with a bit of grit in the mix
― sleeve, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 22:03 (five years ago) link
I’ll put some information on some of the more niche stuff I’ll be voting for up in phases. A couple of tracks:
Kapela Ze Wsi Warszawa- Maydow - Polish drone-folk. KZWW were early participants in Poland’s roots revival scene, taking near-forgotten trad melodies / styles at risk of disappearing in a country perceived as being indifferent to its cultural heritage and incorporating them into new songs. A lot of their stuff is fairly jaunty but Maydow has a strong folk-horror vibe that may appeal to fans of Espers or the Wicker Man idk.
Kasia Stankiewicz - Francuzeczka - I have vivid memories of going to Poland for the first time, getting to the hotel, switching on the TV and the video for this sprawling electro-pop marvel playing. I’ve been transfixed ever since.
The Konki Duet - Il Fait Tout Gris Released slightly before the Nouvelle Vague album but with a similar concept, it’s a French cello cover of Fade To Grey. There isn’t the same sense of ironic detachment you get with Olivier Libeaux’s project though, it’s played dead straight and works wonderfully.
Lady Saw - Five Star Hotel Probably a minor entry in her immense discography but the combination of Mario C’s bouncy Bomb-A-Drop riddim and Saw’s lyrics about precisely which hotels she’d let suitors take her to is enormous fun.

imago -- Brandy - "Full Moon" should be on the track list, not albums.
― Doctor Hu (Leee), Tuesday, 24 September 2019 22:14 (five years ago) link
Maryanne Amacher's Sound Characters is on the albums list but was released too early for the poll.
― All along there is the sound of feedback (Sund4r), Tuesday, 24 September 2019 23:26 (five years ago) link
Brandy - Full Moon is on both lists - presumably the track is a title-track? It was nominated by Jeff W as an album too
― imago, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 23:45 (five years ago) link
Maryanne Amacher is about to be zapped
I voted. I was surprised that I got up to >50 albums and had to make cuts - most of my heavy album listening was in college (which excludes most of the 00s). But the last couple years I've been catching up on a lot of more recent albums. Tracks was TOUGH.
― Vinnie, Wednesday, 25 September 2019 00:11 (five years ago) link
Ah ok! For some reason I didn't see it on the tracks (it is there) and assumed it fell into the wrong list.

imago, google docs is unfortunately blocked on my laptop so i have to send them over via my phone which loses all the 'special characters'i'll try sort any ones out on my voting slips but apologies if i miss any

More tracks:
Raymond & Maria - Ingen Vill Veta Var Du Köpt Din Tröja - Raymond & Maria have cornered the market in sweet acoustic indie-pop songs about how capitalism can lead to a decent standard of living but is ultimately dehumanising (Jobs Where They Don’t Know Our Names, The Fish Are Swimming Slower Every Year, etc). Their best is Ingen Vill Veta Var Du Köpt Din Tröja, re-released a couple of years later in English as No-One Notices Your Brand-New T-Shirt. The chorus approximates to “no-one will be sad when you die / nobody will miss you / nobody even cares where you bought your shirt / even though you’ve done everything that you should / you’ve been polite and happy / and you’ve worked hard to lose that stupid accent”.
Calle 13 - Atrevete-te-te - One of the most popular reggaeton songs of the decade – poking fun at a girl who listens to “pop-rock Latino”, Green Day and Coldplay and is too snobby for Puerto Rican music. Good use of cumbia clarinets.
Delfin - Vesna - Maudlin Russian electro-pop is very much my jam and Delfin’s glittering Vesna with its single verse (forgive me / it’s spring where I’m going / can you find me?) repeated like an incantation is one of the most affecting things of the decade.
B-Jeans - Ei Saa - Estonian Italodisco packed with twinkling synths and rolled consonants. Estonian pop of the era was still a strange cottage industry where almost everything seemed to be written or produced by one guy – Sven Lohmus. I’m 99% sure this was one of his.
Capleton - Long Time - Almost everything on South Rakkas’ infectious Bionic Ras riddim is good but Capleton’s Long Time is a standout. He’s probably marginally better known for conscious reggae these days but excelled at being silly as well.
Sammi Cheng - 808 - Sammi is probably best known in the West for her acting (Blind Detective, Everlasting Regret, etc) but has sold tens of millions of albums at home. Most of her records are fairly boilerplate Cantopop ballads but 808 has a wonderfully woozy charm.

Not to rain on anybody's parade but this:Kaija Saariaho / Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra / Esa-Pekka Salonen / Kronos Quartet – Du cristal …à la fumée / Sept papillons / Nymphéa…is a reissue of a 1993 album with Sept papillons tacked on.

I'm sure it is.

I quite like the Lurker of Chalice, LBI. It's less metal-oriented than I expected (in a good way), almost d&b/trip-hop-ish in parts, and much better than the couple of Leviathan albums I've heard.
― pomenitul, Wednesday, 25 September 2019 14:15 (five years ago) link
damn, we managed not to nominate the hold steady's separation sunday? not my number one, but probably my number two

shit, well when i was nominating my bonus picks, i ctrl+f'd for it, and thought I saw it nominated, but it turns out it was posted in a "pitchfork top 200 albums of the 00s that haven't been nominated yet" post.
― Mommy...can I go out and VAPE tonight? (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 25 September 2019 15:28 (five years ago) link
I'm glad you like it Pom! It's way better than Leviathan, I agree.

xp oh sorry for the confusion, i was a little afraid that might happen. it wasn't the p4k list though it was from the ilx one
― ufo, Wednesday, 25 September 2019 15:46 (five years ago) link
ah word. bummer. i'll vote for a different hold steady album instead, unless we're accepting beyond-last-minute additions?

if nominations were prevented by mischance rather than negligence i suppose i can be lenient. check the nominations list later (or tomorrow) perhaps...

feel it's important to note that halfway through life without buildings 'the leanover' i was all 'hmm, what is this' and then by the end i was in tears, so there's that
― imago, Wednesday, 25 September 2019 23:52 (five years ago) link
I went through the albums list and I had heard 118 front to back. Looking at the list I got, it does look like a part of the music I was listening to from 2000-2009. I do think these polls are good places to start to check out other music you don't know.

thanks so much imago!!!!! you are a true champ!
just popping in to give some love to the Black Angels – Directions to See a Ghost which is actually incredible, even though one might be tempted to unfairly dismiss it as just another generic CMJ-fodder indie-psych album

(it's "Chocolate Disco" by Perfume which I nominated, just in katakana transliteration)

I find that whole Life Without Buildings LP inexplicably moving. I was just saying off-site yesterday that it could even be my #1 album if I can manage to rank stuff. (Almost certainly #1 guitar-y record anyway.)

lethal bizzle 'pow' has so many feat artists that it takes up 2 lines on the ballot is this gonna be a problem for tabulation or no?
poll worth it for making me dig out 'run the road' comp for the first time in years.

I nearly nominated Wiley ft. "England 10"'s 'She Likes To' and not that it would've made the 77 but crediting all the MCs featured on tbe track on an image might've been a 'fun' headache too.
― nashwan, Thursday, 26 September 2019 10:11 (five years ago) link
Two things:
1. Don't forget to vote for Gravenhurst. 'Hollow Men', his only nominated track, is not his most representative song, but it's awesome. The two nominated albums are undeniable masterpieces.
2. Please pay attention to three late-career / career-ending albums that are very much overlooked and/or underrated: In Prism by Polvo, My Heart Has a Wish That You Would Not Go by Aereogramme and The Rising Tide by Sunny Day Real Estate.
All three contain some of their very best songs:
Polvo:'Beggar's Bowl''Lucia'
Aereogramme:'A Life Worth Living''The Running Man'
Sunny Day Real Estate:'Snibe''The Rising Tide'
― ArchCarrier, Thursday, 26 September 2019 12:50 (five years ago) link
