from what I understand the leak is far from complete, not only in terms of songs but the mixing too
― flappy bird, Friday, 1 November 2019 22:58 (five years ago) link
I ended up deleting it after a third listen. I don't like the current aesthetics of it for the most part, the whole sound she is going for in here is very outdated to my ears, it sounds to me like she's trying to beautify some of the worst musical trends of the 90's - but I recon it might improve with further mixing. Song I ended up liking the most is Black Swan Blues but it doesn't sound much like a Grimes song.
I don't know, it seems like a bit of mess tbh and I wouldn't be that surprised if it gets vaulted. I can kind of understand a bit of her previous frustration with it. There some good ideas in there but there's been so much work and time wasted on it that the simplest solution would be to vault it instead of trying to fix it and do something new. Or maybe release one first expecting it to get mixed reviews and then a second, better album a few months apart. It wouldn't be a bad marketing strategy tbh, let the critics tear you down and then lure them back in. Wasn't that the original plan? To do one for the label and another for her? Or am I misremembering how it went?

new single "so heavy i fell through the earth" is decent but feels more like a moody album track than an album opener or single?
miss anthropocene finally has a tracklist and a release date (feb 21) too

i'd guess "adore u" is probably "IDORU"

well that’s also the Romaji for the Japanese rendering of “IDOL”

the leaked "adore"'s running time also matches "IDORU"

(the runner-up was Schiller's "I've Seen It All"; unsurprisingly I really like the grimes single, despite the past few years of grimes)

I mean there’s been a noticeable trend of Enya-house music in the past decade and Grimes was doing variations on it even before this single. I don’t think this is Grimes following trends but rather continuing on a style she had explored previously.
― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Sunday, 17 November 2019 05:46 (four years ago) link
oh, I'm not saying she's following trends, unless the leaked album (which I haven't heard) is full of idk billie eilish ripoffs

IDORU could also be referencing the William Gibson novel, which would be on brand with the concept of the album

this is....fine? I like it better than most of her stuff but I'm still mystified as to what makes her so distinct from or so much more deserving of hype than loads of other acts working in a similar mode

I've listened to and read enough conversations that have made a similar point but not in a value-neutral wayalthough, tbh, with such a dystopian album concept or w/e I guess the commentary is semi-implicitthen again, maybe the dystopia is good?

I’m slowly realizing I hate all this futuristic shit. I was a huge fan of her melancholy bedroom pop—huge huge fan—and also loved her foray into exuberant art pop, which seemed life affirming and artistically brave. But this all seems weird. If it’s sincere, she’s creepy now, and if it’s a troll, what’s the point?
Speaking my truth today. I‘m just an indie fan, i don’t want to be a cyborg.
― treeship., Friday, 22 November 2019 00:17 (four years ago) link
i think she's having fun deliberately saying provocative nonsense that it's not immediately obvious how serious she is about (so trolling basically) after all the frustrations she's had with the media reporting her every word in the past
― ufo, Friday, 22 November 2019 00:30 (four years ago) link
Maybe idk. She seems really fascinating with the singularity and these types of techno-utopian ideas. Maybe it’s all an artistic conceit but who knows.
― treeship., Friday, 22 November 2019 00:33 (four years ago) link
yeah that's the thing, she's sincerely very into that stuff but it's not clear just how much. like she obviously didn't get experimental cornea replacement surgery but how much of the rest of this stuff is a bit?
― ufo, Friday, 22 November 2019 00:40 (four years ago) link
I just know it’s alienating to me as a listener
― treeship., Friday, 22 November 2019 00:45 (four years ago) link
but then again she doesn’t like pandering to audience expectations/desires, and that’s been consistent
― treeship., Friday, 22 November 2019 00:48 (four years ago) link
Ok i just listened to the newest one—i thought “violence” was the newest one.
It’s actually awesome. Still don’t like the singularity stuff but this is a great track.
