Ok i just listened to the newest one—i thought “violence” was the newest one.
It’s actually awesome. Still don’t like the singularity stuff but this is a great track.

Troll moves are bullshit and annoying even when done by people omar little finds attractive

I apologise, that was uncalled for. I'll shut up now.
― Tsar Bombadil (James Morrison), Thursday, November 21, 2019 4:10 PM (fifty-two minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink
It’s pretty clear that she’s someone who just says shit without thinking, I mean give her a mic or some space to rant and she’ll say a bunch of wild shit because I think that’s simply how her mind operates. I do doubt she’s actually trolling as much as just rambling and having fun with her thought process, without regard for what anyone else feels about it. So she says dumb stuff like about Tesla or public transit and she dates a psychopath. I won’t comment on her attractiveness pro or con, I’ll just note your first post and tell you that you shouldn’t have apologized if you really meant it, and if you didn’t you should probably just chill because it’s just grimes.

I think a big part of the problem is Grimes' techno-utopian shit just feels a bit naff and laughable. It's much more Sigue Sigue Sputnik/Network 7 than Blade Runner.

it's... fine?
― ufo, Monday, 25 November 2019 13:27 (four years ago) link
ive come to think she's being critical of tech-utopianism but her strategy is over-identification which might be an unredeemably fraught method of critique imo
― Vapor waif (uptown churl), Monday, 25 November 2019 15:51 (four years ago) link
maybe she's a shallow self centered person who has a platform to talk bullshit because she's good at music and dates a billionaire?
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 25 November 2019 15:57 (four years ago) link
I'd generously go with flakey over self-centered
my mind just keeps going back to the "build a boat and float down the mississippi" story
― mh, Monday, 25 November 2019 16:35 (four years ago) link
there's nothing wrong with being flakey! I have some friends like that. I probably would have a lot of reservations if they had any fame or power
― mh, Monday, 25 November 2019 16:36 (four years ago) link
feel like some outlandish percentage like 75% of ilm distaste for grimes is bc she dated musk for a minute. i do understand since he's pretty distasteful and esp for ilx politics/aesthetics but seems so harsh to run her down bc of a very short romance.

If you look at some of her interviews/blog entries in the past she's always been kind of dorky and had some immature opinions on pretty much everything. It was sort of cute and on-brand earlier in her career because she was younger and it felt sincere because there was a childlike wonder to her music. Now she's in her 30's and dating billionaires so it doesn't feel cute or sincere anymore, it feels willfully naive and there's a backlash to show it, she is in heavy need of some rewiring.
― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 25 November 2019 17:40 (four years ago) link
i thought they had broken up but ok i still think it's not v relevant to evaluating her as an artist

― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 25 November 2019 17:43 (four years ago) link
I still think she's is immensely talented and one of the best artists this decade, but I think she's wasting the spotlight and what should be her prime years as an artist in this album's cycle.

@ ums i mean you're probably right. im trying to be charitable, as someone who has veered from admiration to disgust re: this project. her press release about optimizing her creative process and recent comments about how we are moving towards a sort of baudrillardian simulacrum existence for me was a glimmer of hope that she is subverting some of this shit, but ... you're probably right
― Vapor waif (uptown churl), Monday, 25 November 2019 19:37 (four years ago) link
She should make a black metal album. Fans are used to overlooking politically problematic lyrics.

we should probably just have one thread where we tell all the female artists how they should be conducting their careers.

tbf I'd find Elon Musk a little more entertaining if he was some random local dude who had goofy ideas instead of a billionaire who likes being a celebrity. kind of a social responsibility to live up to when your influence extends beyond your reach
― mh, Monday, 25 November 2019 20:40 (four years ago) link
i'd be more tolerant of her ridiculous antics and embarrassing choice of partner if her music was still as great as it was a few years ago. the new album isn't bad but it's hard to feel excited about
as was said upthread she said plenty of poorly thought out ridiculous things before but that was much more endearing when she wasn't dating a tech billionaire who represents the worst of those sort of tech futurist ideas

Listened to it today. It's not bad! Singles are great and IDORU is good too. Definitely sounds like an unfinished mix/master. Vocal recording/performance and production is the best she's done to this point. Production behind those vocals sounds fairly generic and uninspired compared to her earlier albums. If they can flesh that out, it's a solid record
― octobeard, Wednesday, 27 November 2019 01:30 (four years ago) link
I liked IDORU a lot. the album is good, but I'll most likely wait until the thing is actually out before I spend more time with it.

Reversing the ravages of age seemed like a lot to hope for, but what we did get was a shipping container-based art installation called AI Meditations. Created by Grimes in collaboration with technologist Matt Aimonetti, a sign at the entrance explained that it had been developed as an alternative meditation tool for those who disagree with the received wisdom that nature is inherently calming. “If you’ve grown up with the internet, your natural home is the digital realm,” it read. “As a cyborg, too much exposure to nature and peace can cause feelings of disconnection, making meditation through traditional avenues difficult.”
this is pretty funny. i'm back on the train
