feel like some outlandish percentage like 75% of ilm distaste for grimes is bc she dated musk for a minute. i do understand since he's pretty distasteful and esp for ilx politics/aesthetics but seems so harsh to run her down bc of a very short romance.

in what way is this an ilm thing and not a common experience among music types in general

Listened to it today. It's not bad! Singles are great and IDORU is good too. Definitely sounds like an unfinished mix/master. Vocal recording/performance and production is the best she's done to this point. Production behind those vocals sounds fairly generic and uninspired compared to her earlier albums. If they can flesh that out, it's a solid record

octobeard, Wednesday, 27 November 2019 01:30 (five years ago)

I liked IDORU a lot. the album is good, but I'll most likely wait until the thing is actually out before I spend more time with it.

the interviews with LDR and Brit Marling were pretty interesting. She has interesting and intelligent things to say.

akm, Wednesday, 4 December 2019 22:40 (five years ago)

"she dated musk for a minute." she's still dating him so it's been a very long minute

akm, Wednesday, 4 December 2019 22:41 (five years ago)

Reversing the ravages of age seemed like a lot to hope for, but what we did get was a shipping container-based art installation called AI Meditations. Created by Grimes in collaboration with technologist Matt Aimonetti, a sign at the entrance explained that it had been developed as an alternative meditation tool for those who disagree with the received wisdom that nature is inherently calming. “If you’ve grown up with the internet, your natural home is the digital realm,” it read. “As a cyborg, too much exposure to nature and peace can cause feelings of disconnection, making meditation through traditional avenues difficult.”

this is pretty funny. i'm back on the train

As opposed to track #12, which is CFCF's Liquid Colours.

not that there's anything wrong with that

that's the hell that grimes' current musical output implies, yes.

she's forcing something, that's for sure. . .

Everything from the new one is pretty great, stoked if We Appreciate power will wind up as a bonus track though the site I just checked didn’t have it on any edition but maybe their info is incorrect.

three weeks pass...

I'm not going to link to Grimes' Tweet, which is presumably meant to announce she is carrying Elon Musk's child. Feel free to search it out yourselves, if you dare.

dang this is like the 7th song on a CMJ covermound cd from 1998

adam, Thursday, 13 February 2020 02:31 (five years ago)

I'm hearing some sonic nods to Nashville (mainstream country not the rootsy No Depression type stuff) that would've been pretty unusual for a '98 CMJ song.

o. nate, Thursday, 13 February 2020 02:50 (five years ago)

the way she records guitars sounds so terrible

ufo, Thursday, 13 February 2020 03:13 (five years ago)

I can't hear it over the sound of my DGAF

an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Thursday, 13 February 2020 03:34 (five years ago)

I hear “Wonderwall”

i think modern mainstream country shares a similar hamfisted sonic aesthetic with both this song and 1998 major label alterna-landfill for sure

adam, Thursday, 13 February 2020 12:31 (five years ago)

The banjos really push it from "delete" to "delete forever"

enochroot, Thursday, 13 February 2020 12:55 (five years ago)

unsurprisingly i like this. weird record

not hearing that with this one. it really does sound like a cut-up "wonderwall" sample

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 13 February 2020 15:18 (five years ago)

I can’t unhear the wonderwall now. I like it better towards the end, and it’s good that it stays short. The video is interesting - her hands look terrifying and it must be pretty noisy there in the actual shoot with all the fans blowing.

I was about to post “ unsurprisingly I like this” so brad otm

(I’m sure some of the background isn’t actually there, but at least on my phone, it’s hard to tell how much)

i don't get this at all, how does it relate to Alan Jackson or Brooks and Dunn who were mainstream country in 98

i mean basically taking an indie rock song and adding some superficial banjo and pedal steel

unsurprisingly i like this. weird record

― american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, February 13, 2020 9:09 AM (twenty-five minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

how is it weird??? if this wasn't grimes and just some b-list indie rock singer who got a song placed in a commercial one time none of you would even give this the time of day!

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 13 February 2020 15:40 (five years ago)

I mean at this point whether its cod 98 pop alt indie or cod Orgy singles all this stuff being interesting is only interesting in the light of it being by Grimes and how invested you are in the fact that Grimes is interesting and important and therefore the stuff she does is interesting because it either plays into the existing Grimes mythos or goes against them

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 13 February 2020 15:42 (five years ago)

man i don't even want to like this album, it's just happening

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 13 February 2020 15:42 (five years ago)

if you want to assume anything about my investment in grimes: the persona, let me assure you i have absolutely none

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 13 February 2020 15:43 (five years ago)

none investment

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 13 February 2020 15:43 (five years ago)

I think you underestimate the extent to which Brad likes cod 98 pop alt indie.

MarkoP, Thursday, 13 February 2020 15:43 (five years ago)

and for the record cod orgy singles are inherently interesting to me and resonate perfectly with my taste

xp with markop, who knows me

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 13 February 2020 15:44 (five years ago)

if this wasn't grimes and just some b-list indie rock singer who got a song placed in a commercial one time none of you would even give this the time of day!

also i just think this is a well-written song! it's got a great chorus! but please continue to assume how i'd feel about it if this weren't grimes (probably... better????)

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 13 February 2020 15:45 (five years ago)

okay sorry Brad that was bad faith but i'm just...like....mystified...just absolutely mystified why this is better than any random ass bullshit on some "Indie Coffehouse Morning" Spotify playlist

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 13 February 2020 15:50 (five years ago)

admittedly when i said "weird" i meant it was weird for her, but i also think it works as like a political song for miley cyrus to sing, and makes for a song that collides oddly with yet complements the other songs she's put out from this record, the thesis of which seems to be the world ended in the '90s (agreed)
