J0rdan S., Wednesday, 19 February 2020 22:21 (five years ago)

ok just listened to the new one to see if i can hear any mayer adjacent sounds in there... maybe wheel?

Thybulle on the Dash (Spottie), Wednesday, 19 February 2020 22:31 (five years ago)

is that a banjo in the birthday party mix?

Thybulle on the Dash (Spottie), Wednesday, 19 February 2020 22:33 (five years ago)

i want the 1975 to produce a country song.

Nourry, Wednesday, 19 February 2020 23:44 (five years ago)

in the interview matty did while premiering this song he said the plan after notes is for him & george to make solo albums produced by each other.

ufo, Wednesday, 19 February 2020 23:58 (five years ago)

I think maybe “who says” is the most 1975 John Mayer track?

Anyway I think mayer is much more of a self satisfied yuppie persona I find grating, he’s way less likely to rock the boat or say shits fucked up when it’s fucked up whereas matty is willing to go out on a limb ... something abt mayer still has this fratty entitlement

i think matty’s best lyrics are on i like it when you sleep. i might be biased

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 20 February 2020 03:38 (five years ago)

still digesting "the birthday party" but "guys" and "if you're too shy (let me know)" sound amazing, can't wait for studio versions.

best band on the planet in any case.

petey v, Thursday, 20 February 2020 15:01 (five years ago)

lmao at the video for this

Maybe I'm hanging out in the wrong Twitter comments (Steven Hyden) but am confounded by the hatred of this band from what I (maybe incorrectly?) presume are mostly middle aged white American men. I think the new song is lovely and all they hear is a tongue-in-cheek reference to Pinegrove. The same people who ate up "Ambition makes you look pretty ugly/ kicking squealing Gucci little piggy" a generation ago now think Healy is a fraud, and I don't get it...

hyden is a prize dumbass

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 20 February 2020 20:49 (five years ago)

I tell myself I’m over this band for the moment and then struggle with making a top 10 out of so many beautiful songs. I haven’t listened to anything unreleased yet, so this is just from the official releases. At this moment in time:

Fallingforyou
I Always Wanna Die (Sometimes)
I Couldn’t Be More In Love
Love It If We Made It
Robbers
Settle Down
She’s American
Somebody Else
Surrounded By Heads and Bodies
This Must Be My Dream

winters (josh), Thursday, 20 February 2020 20:51 (five years ago)

To my mind, one difference between Yorke (circa OK Computer) and Healy is that, while Yorke probably would have told people he was full of shit if asked, he always performed/performs the songs very seriously. Matt meanwhile has almost constructed a performative persona around being in on the joke, kind of “don’t believe anything you hear, and least of all this”. It really struck me when I saw a TV show performance of “The Sound” a few years back and Matt sang the song like he was doing a karaoke performance of someone else’s tune, which, conceptually he kind of was? And that is very present at the songwriting level - for example, I cannot think of a band or artist who has written more songs structured as conversations between unreliable narrators.

Considered objectively, this should perhaps make Matt less of a fraud than Thom (though the entire question of “is this fraudulent” is dumb and unhelpful in any event), but I think a lot of people hear Matt’s coded “I am full of shit” messaging and mistake it for something they have worked out for themselves, congratulating themselves for perceiving a kind of fakeness/shallowness to the pseudo-profundity as if that wasn’t precisely the vibe that Matt had been seeking to convey.

Well said, Tim F.

I could listen to "The Birthday Party" on loop for a long time, such a great vibe. it's maybe my favorite song of theirs on first listen since "Somebody Else". though I have no idea how to feel about the video

Vinnie, Friday, 21 February 2020 04:44 (five years ago)

and yeah I think that is a banjo in the mix

Vinnie, Friday, 21 February 2020 04:45 (five years ago)

"you & me together song" is a banger but this hits on a different level

J0rdan S., Friday, 21 February 2020 04:47 (five years ago)

i'm a simpleton, "you & me together song" is my fave out of all the new stuff. (followed by "People")

alpine static, Friday, 21 February 2020 05:15 (five years ago)

starting to be convinced they won't release the album until every after every single track has been issued as a single

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Friday, 21 February 2020 13:54 (five years ago)

They were amazing last night - If You're Too Shy (Let Me Know) was a big singalong already (and sounded absolutely amazing), in fact all the new songs were great (even Guys, which I was dubious of on first listen, was quite affecting).

The few old EP tracks they played were great too, particularly fallingforyou and HNSCC.

They're opening with People/Sex/TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME/Me & You Together Song, but it doesn't feel frontloaded. In fact I think they could already play 3 hours shows without it feeling like they were stretching for material.

toby, Sunday, 23 February 2020 19:24 (five years ago)

i think "the birthday party" is... one of their best songs?

J0rdan S., Sunday, 23 February 2020 21:37 (five years ago)

Good thoughts, Tim F

They must be so mad the zeitgeist has completely shifted since their long promo campaign started

brechtian social distancing (Simon H.), Monday, 30 March 2020 11:13 (five years ago)

Honestly why this new album is delayed https://t.co/PaF7Iy4gO1

realised the album has ended up delayed a full year from its originally intended release now lol

ufo, Friday, 3 April 2020 03:19 (five years ago)

ngl i wasn't convinced by the last three songs they've released for the album so far... but wow this is amazing. they finally made a great acoustic track.

josh az (2011nostalgia), Friday, 3 April 2020 03:47 (five years ago)

i almost cried... fuck you, the 1975. and thank you.

Nourry, Friday, 3 April 2020 09:26 (five years ago)

ban

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Sunday, 5 April 2020 04:58 (five years ago)

it's pretty easily their best track in this sort of mode?

ufo, Sunday, 5 April 2020 07:16 (five years ago)

theyve made great acoustic tracks

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Sunday, 5 April 2020 07:41 (five years ago)

their best acoustic track since their last single

J0rdan S., Sunday, 5 April 2020 19:55 (five years ago)

Oh i was thinking of Nana, She Lays Down and Be My Mistake as their past acoustic songs, I thought they were all pretty universally considered meh here? I guess The Birthday Party is technically acoustic too but it's not, like, acoustic in that bare, minimalist, stripped-down sense

josh az (2011nostalgia), Sunday, 5 April 2020 21:02 (five years ago)

team “nana” is great

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Sunday, 5 April 2020 21:07 (five years ago)

agreed. i just listened it and it always wreck me.

Nourry, Sunday, 5 April 2020 21:27 (five years ago)

102!

Jonathan Hellion Mumble, Sunday, 5 April 2020 22:18 (five years ago)

Paris is acoustic right? also great

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Monday, 6 April 2020 01:32 (five years ago)

there's an acoustic version of "paris" they released on youtube which is better than the original

their previous acoustic studio tracks ("nana", "she lays down", "be my mistake", "surrounded by heads and bodies", "102") are all fine but i wouldn't call any great

"the birthday party" doesn't really fit in the mould of the rest so i'm not counting it but it's one of their absolute best imo, the sophisti-country sound of it feels like something only they could do instead of just being a well-executed pastiche like it could have been

ufo, Monday, 6 April 2020 01:45 (five years ago)

glad to see “102” mentioned! I’ve been listening to it all the time recently, it’s in my POX now
