theyve made great acoustic tracks

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Sunday, 5 April 2020 07:41 (four years ago) link

their best acoustic track since their last single

J0rdan S., Sunday, 5 April 2020 19:55 (four years ago) link

Oh i was thinking of Nana, She Lays Down and Be My Mistake as their past acoustic songs, I thought they were all pretty universally considered meh here? I guess The Birthday Party is technically acoustic too but it's not, like, acoustic in that bare, minimalist, stripped-down sense

josh az (2011nostalgia), Sunday, 5 April 2020 21:02 (four years ago) link

team “nana” is great

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Sunday, 5 April 2020 21:07 (four years ago) link

agreed. i just listened it and it always wreck me.

Nourry, Sunday, 5 April 2020 21:27 (four years ago) link

102!

Jonathan Hellion Mumble, Sunday, 5 April 2020 22:18 (four years ago) link

Paris is acoustic right? also great

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Monday, 6 April 2020 01:32 (four years ago) link

there's an acoustic version of "paris" they released on youtube which is better than the original

their previous acoustic studio tracks ("nana", "she lays down", "be my mistake", "surrounded by heads and bodies", "102") are all fine but i wouldn't call any great

"the birthday party" doesn't really fit in the mould of the rest so i'm not counting it but it's one of their absolute best imo, the sophisti-country sound of it feels like something only they could do instead of just being a well-executed pastiche like it could have been

ufo, Monday, 6 April 2020 01:45 (four years ago) link

glad to see “102” mentioned! I’ve been listening to it all the time recently, it’s in my POX now

k3vin k., Monday, 6 April 2020 06:14 (four years ago) link

i do really love "nana" and "surrounded by heads and bodies." "jesus christ 2005 god bless america" is better than both tho.

petey v, Tuesday, 7 April 2020 17:41 (four years ago) link

this is one of their best songs ever

brechtian social distancing (Simon H.), Friday, 10 April 2020 01:33 (four years ago) link

the song kill for love by chromatics is a kind of 1975 song

Josh (phantompenguin), Wednesday, 15 April 2020 02:17 (four years ago) link

“If You’re Too Shy” coming next week, I’m fuckin perched

self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Wednesday, 15 April 2020 21:14 (four years ago) link

yessss

k3vin k., Thursday, 16 April 2020 08:38 (four years ago) link

the studio version of "if you're too shy"..... overwhelmingly powerful

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 23 April 2020 18:42 (four years ago) link

it's mixed in a way that is making me feel insane but i like that the song crosses into SNL band territory at certain points, it's a super cheesy song

J0rdan S., Thursday, 23 April 2020 18:52 (four years ago) link

feels to me like they've perfected the john hughes soundtrack cut aesthetic of the first record

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 23 April 2020 18:54 (four years ago) link

"heart out" goes to the prom

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 23 April 2020 18:56 (four years ago) link

i was expecting something super clean like "she's american" but this is a bit wonkier than i expected off the live performances

J0rdan S., Thursday, 23 April 2020 19:00 (four years ago) link

god "the birthday party" is so fucking good

J0rdan S., Thursday, 23 April 2020 19:01 (four years ago) link

I’m not too shy at all, Matty

self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Thursday, 23 April 2020 19:32 (four years ago) link

LOVE "if you're too shy"

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Thursday, 23 April 2020 19:47 (four years ago) link

sooo gooooood ugh this band

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 23 April 2020 19:48 (four years ago) link

this is my lifebelt.

Nourry, Thursday, 23 April 2020 19:48 (four years ago) link

sounds like they mixed it to stand out in a current pop environment like the bass is extra heavy

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Thursday, 23 April 2020 19:50 (four years ago) link

i suppose i could quibble w the mix. like the horns could be brighter/sharper ? but that seems to miss the point

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Thursday, 23 April 2020 19:54 (four years ago) link

feels to me like they've perfected the john hughes soundtrack cut aesthetic of the first record

k3vin k., Thursday, 23 April 2020 20:06 (four years ago) link

i love love love the weird instrumental intro bit!

petey v, Thursday, 23 April 2020 20:11 (four years ago) link

that weird instrumental bit is a conciser version of their instrumentals imo

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 23 April 2020 20:19 (four years ago) link

wish Love, Simon were re-released with "If You're Too Shy" as a non-diegetic piece in one of those eyeing-you-from-afar scenes.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 23 April 2020 20:20 (four years ago) link

it's all kinda smushed together into a granola bar of sound to me but w/e that's most music is now

J0rdan S., Thursday, 23 April 2020 20:26 (four years ago) link

i sort of like the symmetry of them doing another john hughes-y song but about avatar sex, stuff like "weird science" as a subtextual influence

J0rdan S., Thursday, 23 April 2020 20:27 (four years ago) link

This is amazing

k3vin k., Thursday, 23 April 2020 21:47 (four years ago) link

the chugging bass part makes me more sure i want to see them get into wax trax

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Thursday, 23 April 2020 21:52 (four years ago) link

"Well, I found the hotel/I called up the twins/It's seven in the morning so they won't let me in" is sharp writing.
