this record has made me realize that I don't like matty all that much anymore, or at least not enough to spend 80 minutes with ~matty thoughts~

nothing but hits

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 19 May 2020 16:42 (four years ago) link

on a stan nerd level it's like they dove back into the EP aesthetic and blew it up into its own world in a way that is distinctly post-everything that came after it

can you develop this?

there's nothing wrong with them really, I just find him exhausting at this length

On a purely aural level, it's their most delicious. The confidence of the singles -- their strongest run imo -- does complement the quieter Burial/Radiohead stuff; Healy can make these fabulous declarative statements, then disappear into the music for a while ("Shiny Collarbone," "Yeah I Know") before reemerging. It plays like a deejay set.

to me the overarching palate of this album is the electronic/shoegazey sound of the EPs, but it's also distinctly post-everything the band made after those EPs (maybe that part wasn't quite clear). there's the neo-soul stuff, the "tootime"ish pop, the cheesey "she's american" 80s numbers, acoustic tracks and flirting w/ country, the orchestral stuff from the last album. some of it is fully self-referential as well... "nothing revealed" opens in a way that calls back to "sincerity is scary" etc. again it all strikes me as pretty coherent as a standalone record and w/in the context of the band's career arc.

i think i agree!

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 19 May 2020 16:50 (four years ago) link

yeah i was gonna add to your point j0rd that it's like what would happen if the eps were released after a brief inquiry, so it's almost a more in-focus version of them, this mutable liquid space that can just as easily result in something like "roadkill" as "bagsy not in net" (incredible song btw vastly underrated itt)

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 19 May 2020 16:53 (four years ago) link

this is the album i've always wanted them to make without knowing it lol

j0rd thank-you for those posts, particularly the one referencing the EPs.
really interesting to think about.

i think i'm falling completely in love with this thing.

downright shocked at how many times i've listened to an 80-minute record today

the "chorus" payoff of "what should i say" is actually a bit underwhelming i'm finding. wish it wasn't wordless - feels a bit too spotifycore imo.

yes, highly recommended

have not heard this yet but encouraging signs include 1) the singles, 2) jordan and brad being all in 3) posts that start with “on a stan nerd level”

They really weren’t kidding about this thing having Burial beats!

Yeah. I got to know the 1975 through the music first, and only later started taking note of matty as a public figure. He has a big personality, obviously, but seems very assured and clear eyed on when to play the solipsism angle for artistic effect, and when to just get out, and make room for other sentiments.

Josh (phantompenguin), Tuesday, 19 May 2020 20:43 (four years ago) link

"if you're too shy" into "playing on my mind" into "having no head" into "what should i say" into "bagsy" really feels like the fully developed original thesis of the band to me. like if you heard the EP/first album and then that stretch it would make total sense to you as "growth" even if you hadn't heard the stuff in between

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 19 May 2020 21:02 (four years ago) link

'bagsy not in net' is channeling deep the streets-weak become heroes vibes.
this record is so weird and wonderful.

Nourry, Tuesday, 19 May 2020 21:55 (four years ago) link

Bagsy Not in Net is 100% sampling the intro to "Sailing", right?

its a gorgeous sophisti-pop track built around a temptations sample

ufo, Wednesday, 20 May 2020 00:33 (four years ago) link

i can kinda forgive the sequencing for being so weird because i really have no idea how you'd make something that flows at all coherently out of this stylistic grab bag. but iliwys was almost as long and expansive and that's a masterpiece of sequencing so, you know, i have high expectations for this band.

i did already make a radically resequenced playlist that cuts out like a third of the album and i like it a lot better but there's a lot of stuff that i like fine but couldn't make fit at all.

ufo, Wednesday, 20 May 2020 00:54 (four years ago) link

a lot of the shorter tracks feel like interludes but they don't actually work to bridge anything so they're just jarring where they are. like "bagsy not in net" is a nice enough loop but i wish they'd done more with it or placed it somewhere it would have actually worked as an interlude. "shiny collarbone" is a bit more substantial but the same thing goes for it. "then because she goes" is a great half of a song but again the sequencing does it no favours at all.

the other tracks that i like the least are "yeah i know" which has potential but just doesn't have enough to it to keep me interested, and "what should i say" which is a nice groove but i don't care for the vocals at all and it's just lacking something.

another thing with the sequencing is the start of the album is soooo slow with the 5 minute ambient/greta intro and another 4 minutes of orchestral interludes in the first 15 minutes.

the singles are all pretty much perfect except "people" and even that's grown on me. "roadkill" and "i think there's something you should know" are perfect too. "playing on my mind" is very good, it's nice they've finally gotten the acoustic tracks right on this album. no one's really said anything about "don't worry" but it's gorgeous. i'm not blown away by either "tonight" or "nothing revealed/everything denied" but they're still quite good. i like "having no head" a fair bit but not quite as much as "how to draw/petrichor" or the iliwys title track as far as their 6 minute electronic pieces go.

here's my current attempt at resequencing it to satisfy my frustrations with it:
The End (Music For Cars)
Frail State Of Mind
Me & You Together Song
Roadkill
Jesus Christ 2005 God Bless America
The Birthday Party
Having No Head
I Think There's Something You Should Know
Shiny Collarbone
Tonight (I Wish I Was Your Boy)
Nothing Revealed / Everything Denied
Playing On My Mind
If You're Too Shy (Let Me Know)
Don't Worry
Guys

i'm still not quite sure if this sequence is better with or without "shiny collarbone" there but in the spirit of the album i'm keeping it around for now. i really could not make "then because she goes" fit anywhere unfortunately. i've never been huge on "people".

ufo, Wednesday, 20 May 2020 02:59 (four years ago) link

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 20 May 2020 13:46 (four years ago) link

you did prove that you can edit this tight 80 minute record into a tight 58 minute record (which iirc is the length of a brief inquiry)

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 20 May 2020 13:47 (four years ago) link

this album is so many things but it's the opposite of tight

to be clear, outside of the like three tracks i'm not too into, everything on this album ranges from 'very good' to 'the best thing they've ever done'. this is a very good record in spite of the baffling sequencing which actively detracts from it. i've probably been a little too negative due to being underwhelmed on first listen, there's so much to love here anyway.

anyway i want a 10 minute version of "i think there's something you should know"

ufo, Wednesday, 20 May 2020 14:07 (four years ago) link

my edit is like 52 mins but I dare not share it lol

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Wednesday, 20 May 2020 14:08 (four years ago) link

58 mins already feels very sex and the city 2

megan thee macallan 18 year (||||||||), Wednesday, 20 May 2020 14:12 (four years ago) link

idk album feels like it whips by for me despite being 80 minutes. might be an oxymoron to consider that "tight" but
