Of all the songs on BF, "Push Upstairs" is the one whose estimation has risen the most since '99. (The rest have basically held steady. This is the one I underrated.)

MY NUMBAH 2
Very nearly my #1, and my introduction to Underworld? I thought I found it on a movie soundtrack as a youth or something but... it doesn't appear to be on any movie soundtracks as far as I can find?
I can only imagine this means that I stumbled across Underworld accidentally, on some kinda audiogalaxy type thing, because I didn't have a friend introduce me. i remember having it burned on a cd that i paid a kid named kyle $5 to make for me lol
Love the sinister-sounding synth at the end. Increasingly agitated sounding Karl is my favourite Karl lol

glad to see Mamgu so high. I think it's one of the best sounding tracks they ever did. crank it up and drown in an ocean of sound
― frogbs, Wednesday, 17 June 2020 21:00 (four years ago) link
as for Push Upstairs...well I love the accent Karl adopts for this one, kinda funny that he basically never used it again. that "wuhhh" sound always makes me laugh
a while ago my roommate and I had a playlist of songs for when we played online poker and this was one of them. "Push, push in..."
another song on there was YMO's "Cue" since the line "give me a cue" sounds like you're asking for a Queen
― frogbs, Wednesday, 17 June 2020 21:03 (four years ago) link
Push Downstairs holds a special place for me because, though there is a vast sea of places Underworld mention that I've never been to (found out from this thread that Barking is a location), they explicitly say my home state twice. "Maryland? yeah"

The real secret to learning to love “Push Upstairs” is realising it is a love song to Pusheen.
― Tim F, Wednesday, 17 June 2020 22:22 (four years ago) link
The secret to loving Push Upstairs for me was seeing it live with the green laser. There's a stuttering / skidding type sound that has rapid short stutters then finishes on a long note that just kills me live with that laser going overhead. Don't think i've ever put it on at home, but it's so fun live.

― Noel Emits, Thursday, 18 June 2020 16:57 (four years ago) link
okay so one thing I've noticed when relistening to a lot of this stuff is that a lot of UW's music sounds propulsive, particularly the sequenced bass lines on tunes like Spoonman, Deep Arch, King of Snake, Mo Move, This Must be Drum Street, etc. etc. I don't know much about music theory but there's something about the note progressions that Rick uses that gives a bunch of their work the feeling of leaning forward. obviously KoS is famous for sampling Summer/Moroder but that aesthetic is all over their catalogue.
― frogbs, Thursday, 18 June 2020 16:59 (four years ago) link
It's probably not just this but he uses very swung rhythms a lot. There's also conversely an odd kind of thick static presence to things like Rez, something to do with the density of high frequency percussive elements, or a buried breakbeat. Maybe a mixture of the two is characteristic of their stuff.
― Noel Emits, Thursday, 18 June 2020 17:07 (four years ago) link
great list, MUPPP!
― maf you one two (maffew12), Thursday, 18 June 2020 17:28 (four years ago) link
I noticed that about the Jumbo bassline, it's so short, and seemingly simple and repetitive but doesn't get even remotely boring. there's something special I can't quite articulate about how the last two notes are portamento'ed. masters of propulsion.

you're 45 minutes into an Underworld show and you think you recognise that bassline, but did it place they play it already or are you thinking of that other song, or are they mixing the two together, or was this something you weren't expecting to hear and
