okay so one thing I've noticed when relistening to a lot of this stuff is that a lot of UW's music sounds propulsive, particularly the sequenced bass lines on tunes like Spoonman, Deep Arch, King of Snake, Mo Move, This Must be Drum Street, etc. etc. I don't know much about music theory but there's something about the note progressions that Rick uses that gives a bunch of their work the feeling of leaning forward. obviously KoS is famous for sampling Summer/Moroder but that aesthetic is all over their catalogue.
― frogbs, Thursday, 18 June 2020 16:59 (four years ago) link
It's probably not just this but he uses very swung rhythms a lot. There's also conversely an odd kind of thick static presence to things like Rez, something to do with the density of high frequency percussive elements, or a buried breakbeat. Maybe a mixture of the two is characteristic of their stuff.

I noticed that about the Jumbo bassline, it's so short, and seemingly simple and repetitive but doesn't get even remotely boring. there's something special I can't quite articulate about how the last two notes are portamento'ed. masters of propulsion.

you're 45 minutes into an Underworld show and you think you recognise that bassline, but did it place they play it already or are you thinking of that other song, or are they mixing the two together, or was this something you weren't expecting to hear and

I love 8 Ball. Really great song and strangely very epic as well. One of my favorite 'walking around the city' songs. ― brotherlovesdub, Saturday, February 16, 2013 5:00 AM
Granted, a lot of my love for 8 Ball comes from how I still perceive it as the last truly great Underworld track. They've released some decent material since, but nothing that compares to their '90s output. If they'd ended their run with 8 Ball, I wouldn't have minded at all. ― Turkey, Friday, February 15, 2013 9:36 PM

This is probably my favourite track on Barking, and that's saying something. I gotta say, every time I listen to a new Underworld album I think, 'That was disappointing.' Then I listen to it a few more times and I end up absolutely loving it. With Barking it seemed very ordinary at first, samey, but wow, now it's one of my favourite things ever. Also, this film clip is incredibly brilliant.
