haha if I ever find a bar that has "thing in a book" in the mp3 options I will become even more infamous and despised

― TOMBOT, Thursday, February 21, 2008 6:40 AM

placement would be unchanged including 1 vote for remix Second Hand, on comp Café Del Mar

This 3rd disc, with "Thing in a Book" and "Most 'Ospitable" is so ace. Thing In A Book would probably be a top 5 for me track, if we did a poll right now. Maybe even like, #1.

― frogbs, Saturday, November 1, 2014 1:06 AM

alternate version Man Loop, from their old website

I only ever listen to that Thing in a Book track when on the train to London, but it is good.

I don't like picking one from this kind of band, as it's not really about that for me, but Banstyle/Sappys Curry is as close as it gets.

Actually, there's one called Oich Oich that I like a lot too... Maybe that.

A poll without Faxed Invitation, Peach Tree, Trim, Best Mamgu Ever, Oich Oich, 8 Ball, Thing In A Book, and River of Bass is a poll not worth rolling out results for.

idk what there is to say about "thing in a book", just mesmerising its entire 20 minute runtime

ufo, Friday, 19 June 2020 11:46 (five years ago)

shh, it's playing

maf you one two (maffew12), Friday, 19 June 2020 11:47 (five years ago)

This was #18 on my ballot so can't argue with that placing. Sublime

groovypanda, Friday, 19 June 2020 11:56 (five years ago)

i've figured out 18 tracks that are surely left to place so one has to miss out and i can't imagine which it could possibly be

I make it 17 so not sure which one I'm missing

groovypanda, Friday, 19 June 2020 11:59 (five years ago)

that's a more fun position to be in. Math rots!

maf you one two (maffew12), Friday, 19 June 2020 12:02 (five years ago)

Finding out about Man Loop for the first time today is wonderful. It would be great if they would stick stuff like this up on their new Bandcamp

I am using your worlds, Friday, 19 June 2020 12:05 (five years ago)

Catching up and re-tracking down and trying to metadate their C21st sidebar tracks during Drift, while also tracking the release pattens for Drift, made me frequently imagine how beautifully convenient it could be if they handled the next Drift through Bandcamp, and different ideas for the in-between-episodes weeks.

After hardcore researching and listening over the last couple of months for this poll, now that they've launched a BC I basically reckon they should hire me to run it.

an, uh, razor of love (sic), Friday, 19 June 2020 12:27 (five years ago)

are there any recordings of original born slippy with .nuxx's lyrics out there?

― ufo, Friday, June 19, 2020 8:39 PM

Here's an October 1994 Slippy, an August 1995 (post-release) Slippy with Nuxx lyrics, and 2 weeks later Slippy with Waitress and Nuxx lyrics

pleasantly surprised by how high this is, i think this is exactly where i had it.

ufo, Friday, 19 June 2020 12:48 (five years ago)

incredible memory of listening to this on the plane on my first trip to nyc, feeling so alive, etc.

geoffreyess, Friday, 19 June 2020 12:56 (five years ago)

Could this mean Rez and Cowgirl are combined and will thus run away with the top spot?!

Have been anticipating this result for awhile now.

Dirty Epic H. (Eric H.), Friday, 19 June 2020 13:01 (five years ago)

"low burn" and "ova nova" are very og underworld while the rest is verrrryyyy different

― BradNelson, Tuesday, March 8, 2016 5:48 PM

piano cover

Brilliant, mesmerizing layers of dreamy highs and lows and travels through time and space Underworld style!

A tune that can lead your thoughts and emotions to a different state. I can enjoy it on the sofa or with a freak dancing, totally, unlimited.

Favourite dance track of the last decade. In fact, in the right mood, maybe favourite dance track ever. I fucking love you Underworld !!

KCRW session video 2016

Just watching Karl tweak with every minute change of direction this song takes. He really feels it. Born to make music.

Some bands and music are one time wonders...But Underworld's music is as appealing and awesome as ever....ageless.

I got introduced to Underworld quite late...in 2002...and the music i heard then is still a part of my daily playlist today!!!

an, uh, razor of love (sic), Friday, 19 June 2020 13:07 (five years ago)

Unlimited. Fuck numbers!

maf you one two (maffew12), Friday, 19 June 2020 13:13 (five years ago)

totally

cheek, Friday, 19 June 2020 13:24 (five years ago)

I think I listened to "Thing in a Book" five times, maybe more, when preparing my ballot. It made my top 10 (only new-to-me track to do so) but I suspect I'm still underrating it

"Low Burn" is my favorite Barbara track by far. So propulsive

Vinnie, Friday, 19 June 2020 13:51 (five years ago)

Earlier today I heard Rez playing loudly from a postal van. I think the thread should know.

Noel Emits, Friday, 19 June 2020 13:57 (five years ago)

This was the most pleasant part of my journey into town and back.

Noel Emits, Friday, 19 June 2020 14:05 (five years ago)

that rules

maf you one two (maffew12), Friday, 19 June 2020 14:10 (five years ago)

both these tracks are so great

I'd been listening to Second Hand for years before I knew about Thing in a Book. couldn't believe how great it was for a B-side. guessing it would've made an album if it weren't 20 minutes long

As for Low Burn...always thought of it as like a sequel to Jumbo

frogbs, Friday, 19 June 2020 14:25 (five years ago)

I like that Low Burn has this very chill hippie mantra throughout against such a, for them, deep dark river of bass.

nashwan, Friday, 19 June 2020 14:39 (five years ago)

Really enjoying this thread - I've hardly listened to new Underworld material this century, other than a little of Drift, and there's clearly a lot of amazing music to catch up on. (I'm amused to see myself quoted above on Beautiful Burnout - I would have guessed that I'd never listened to this album at all, so I wonder if I only heard it once, before the three plays in a row that I've just given it.)

toby, Friday, 19 June 2020 14:56 (five years ago)

I also count one too many. Could this mean Rez and Cowgirl are combined and will thus run away with the top spot?!

― maf you one two (maffew12), Friday, June 19, 2020 7:37 AM (five hours ago) bookmarkflaglink

lolololol i had them as one song from EE as my number 2 or 3 for a long time before i separated them and moved them down to make sic's life less difficult, this would truly be the funniest result

low burn as og underworld/jumbo sequel super OTM. so uplifting.

also ppl saying that there's one more song in their probable top remaining than spot left have me shook, i really don't know what "rates" i guess because i only have like... 14 and i am not even confident? i must be missing some v obvious ones!

TRANCED INTO RADIOACTIVE PUREE (Will M.), Friday, 19 June 2020 16:58 (five years ago)

I don't think I listened to the 20m Thing In A Book while I was going thru... big mistake eh?

TRANCED INTO RADIOACTIVE PUREE (Will M.), Friday, 19 June 2020 17:01 (five years ago)

the results have been a real unpredictable journey for me so far so i don't want to ruin that by guessing

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 19 June 2020 17:03 (five years ago)

much as i'm convinced that dirty epic is going to win

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 19 June 2020 17:03 (five years ago)

i am rooting for it but my guess for number one is one of the songs with MO in it (if u take groovypanda's alternate spelling to heart)

TRANCED INTO RADIOACTIVE PUREE (Will M.), Friday, 19 June 2020 17:06 (five years ago)

but yeah i am not looking to guess i'm just enjoying the RIDE

interesting, I think he'll be limping in around #5

maf you one two (maffew12), Friday, 19 June 2020 17:10 (five years ago)

I think Juanita will be #1

frogbs, Friday, 19 June 2020 17:12 (five years ago)

same, but only if Rez and Cowgirl keep their hands to themselves

maf you one two (maffew12), Friday, 19 June 2020 17:15 (five years ago)

Are all the dirties getting combined in a big dirty katamari?

Noel Emits, Friday, 19 June 2020 17:40 (five years ago)

Yeah, they must. "Repeat" votes could have that go real high, that's true. There was talk of keeping Rez and Cowgirl separate since they were both singles... but sic works in mysterious ways

maf you one two (maffew12), Friday, 19 June 2020 17:48 (five years ago)

(I'm amused to see myself quoted above on Beautiful Burnout - I would have guessed that I'd never listened to this album at all, so I wonder if I only heard it once, before the three plays in a row that I've just given it.)

Either way, nobody can say you didn't keep your promise:

(n.b. I hate the culture of commenting on albums while listening to them for the 1st time, so I'll try to make that the last thing I say about this for a while!)

-

could be an unpredictable sic combining in the mix

Or predicted:

However, since there are at least 31 tracks in the top 30,

QUICK STRAW POLL FOLKS

I'm delighted it's working for Snrub, but the rollout was never meant to stretch this long, and I'm not going to be able to post steadily through the daytime today.

If people are up for finishing on Saturday, we can bash through a few over a couple of hours and wrap up tomorrow.

If a Monday close is preferred, I'll drop one more today but stoke the thread occasionally through the weekend, with bonus downloads and other links & flotsam that hasn't made it in along the way*.

Fine with either, though if we go for Monday, there's the possibility of Tim F. catching up with the thread and posting thoughts. Also Will M. has been slacking on those prepared comments!

* maybe a youtube playlist or two, for easier catch-up/recap listening for everyone. Unless Noel's psychic powers can send a postal van round to each of us to just play everything?

an, uh, razor of love (sic), Friday, 19 June 2020 18:16 (five years ago)

Let's face it, it would take all weekend just to go back and listen to everything once while looking at nashwan's images.

an, uh, razor of love (sic), Friday, 19 June 2020 18:18 (five years ago)

We can take a break

I've been trying to follow the poll but have got seriously stuck listening to different versions of Twist. It would be in my top three if I voted again.

Anti-Cop Ponceortium (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 19 June 2020 18:19 (five years ago)

yes let's extend to monday imo. i might go through the rollout all weekend too
