oooooh i missed the whole end because i was running my trivia night thing! here are some really stupid notes i had written before
9. Whenever I think about A hundred days off i think "yeah i don't like that album as much" but then I hear TWO MONTHS OFF and I'm like "oh yeah that song is all time"8. *well now that i know how high this song ranks i'm worried to post this one but) CUPS is a song I would've rated higher if the last two minutes were longer and the first nine minutes were shorter, but I still love it!7. GOD TALKING6. That skidding wheels bit though SKRI SKRI SKRI SKRI SKRI SKRI SKRI SKRI SKRI SKRI SKRI SKRI SKRI SKRI SKRI SKRI SKRIIIIIIIITCH THUNK i think about it a lot5. Making a song this sweet and like... not cloying? is an incredible achievement (and uh no pun intended)4. Not my personal fave, but probably the song I'd recommend to people who ask "what is Underworld?" The AUDACITY of making this track 1 lol3. Tin There is actually perfect. Pearl's Girl too I guess but especially Tin There.2. Dirty Epic was my (and apparently many others') My number one. It wasn't my introduction to Underworld, but the number of hours I spent listening to it on repeat at various points in my life cannot be understated. Such a sadness to it, really one of the most evocative Karl stories.1. If you could wear out a DVD, I would've worn out the Rez/Cowgirl part of everything everything. Weird to hear them separate to this day. so you can imagine my delight to see them combined!
bonus story - we fostered two cats starting in february so they've been with us a few months and we "upgraded" that i guess to fully adopting them. they are sweet but they are still pretty feral so we can't touch them yet. we collectively refer to them as "the boys" and occasionally call them each just "boy". well i want them to get more comfortable with me so i talk to them a lot even though i can't pet them yet, and for the past week i've started doing this ting where i start singing NUXX to them but changing the lyrics to be about what they're doing? "cat boy small boy chewing on cardboard boy in the kitchen boy he is a fuzzy boy" shit like that. they don't seem amused but i like it and it is actually making me like that song more again OK THE END

hard to argue with the #1. I don't think anything will ever match the high I got from hearing "Rez/Cowgirl" live on Everything Everything for the first time. I was 16, I think. Still, I thought "Juanita" would take it. was cool to see some newer stuff in the Top 20. Three of my top 5 were from the last 5 years.
― frogbs, Tuesday, 23 June 2020 19:47 (four years ago) link
Shenanigans. I had made my peace with "Juanita" coming in at #2, but #4 is some bullshit.

Juanita partistans are very much encouraged to think of it as the alternative #1 - I was actually planning to formally count down 6, 5, and 4 as the "real" top three, until literally yesterday I realised that with four different versions of Snake voted for, that didn't really work.
(J : K : TDOL still would have beaten Jumbo without votes for Juanita.) Have there been any other polls where the #1 got no #1 votes?!
Not really fair to compare :)

okay here we go with PLAYLISTS for relistening:
the MAIN COUNTDOWN playlist is designed just for listening: if there's a remastered version of a single, or a Drift piece that got reworked after the video, then the audio-only version will generally be in here. Most of the sibling tracks also appear in more than one form.
the VISUAL PLAYLIST is designed for either watching, or putting on the TV for your going-about-your-day listening. Everything that has a video of some kind has one of those videos appear, anything else which I could find a standalone pro-shot live video for shows up with one of those, and there are some audience-shot live videos of varying quality for a few others.
the ALTERNATE VERSIONS playlist has a different take, or a live reworking, of most of the countdown (The 15-minute Peach Tree and 20-minute Ancient Phat Farm Coat are both only here, as the Riverruns are on the countdown, and Spoon Deep is also here instead of the main countdown).
― an, uh, razor of love (sic), Tuesday, 23 June 2020 22:37 (four years ago) link
could we get a full countdown in text
also, wow. i was gonna joke about how long this rollout took but you really put together everything, everything
― mookieproof, Tuesday, 23 June 2020 22:56 (four years ago) link
At the risk of making Brad sadder, I feel compelled to note that while I like "8 Ball" a lot I don't really think of it as a peak UW tune - it kinda sounds like the band was asked to write a soothing instrumental dub of "Pure Shores".
Doubtless everyone will tell me "yes, that is why it is great" - and I agree it's nice! - but not so exciting that I would put it above anything else in the top 50 or so.
(although with such depth of quality in tunes that's not at all the put-down it looks like)

― maf you one two (maffew12), Thursday, 25 June 2020 22:48 (four years ago) link
What's with hard vs soft
I aimed to make each one a flowing listen as an album; they often did two (and occasionally three) different remixes on a job; the probably-the-last-ever-Emerson-and-Rick remixes were named Soft Mix and Hard Mix; the Hard album tends to be more knocking techno and the Soft album more housey or balaeric, but mostly both bang and it's just a way of separating the alternate mixes.
And bonus?!
Other stuff that doesn't really fit the definition of an Underworld '90s remix poll, but is of interest to hear / satisfyingly completist anyway.
(I threw some extra Karl stuff into the albummy-things to give him some more representation, and because they fit in the listening flow, but won't include 'em on an eligibility list.)

Examining Discogs afresh, the editors believe that their earlier attempts to scry the various mislabelled Cafe del Mar singles resulted in inaccurate conclusions; it is likely that the "Underworld Mix" here is in fact the Hip Hop Mix, and not by Underworld. Mix Three is probably the "regular" Underworld Remix, and the unnumbered two are different takes of Dub Heaven: a 10-minute version featuring Mr Hyde on guitar on the 1993 UK CD single, and a 12-minute guitarless version on the 1996 reissue 12".
