i really enjoy the rosa album on that same label, they put out good stuff

donna rouge, Tuesday, 3 November 2020 18:19 (four years ago) link

New Domenique Dumont is excellent as expected, more subtle and less chirpy than previous releases but would have been ideal if it had came out in time for the end of summer.

Dog Latin, did you get the 10” reissue for Raw Silk and does yours also sound terrible? My copy has a lot of noise.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 24 November 2020 20:47 (three years ago) link

no, i only got an mp3 i'm afraid

Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Wednesday, 25 November 2020 17:56 (three years ago) link

new K-Lone album is quite different from his previous stuff and definitely fits the tropical balearic sound: https://wisdomteethuk.bandcamp.com/album/k-lone-cape-cira-lp

You mean new as in this year? It's been out since spring. Indeed it is so good! Check out The Falls EP while you're at it.

Evan, Wednesday, 25 November 2020 18:07 (three years ago) link

Ah well it's new to me. I was only familiar with his clubbier stuff till now

Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Wednesday, 25 November 2020 20:56 (three years ago) link

TBH I've only come to appreciate the term 'Balearic' as a loose concept recently, even if I've enjoyed the sound and vibe for a very long time.

Not even 100% sure what I've been playing really counts as such, but for me it's about painting images of liminal spaces and places: Be it a beach, a forest or an office building

she's pretty obscure, maybe slightly better known for being in a minimal wave group called "shiny two shiny" (red flame labelmates with severed heads and noted sabres-era weatherall collaborator david harrow)

captured tracks did a "collected works" reissue LP way back in 2005 but barring a track or two imo nowhere near as good as "higher"

So excited to see Test Pressing start a forum. This is good news. Thanks for sharing.

In the spirit of sharing, i've made an all vinyl mix of some balearic vibes. It's a brief 40min ride, and I think if you're on this thread, you'll enjoy the tunes.

i've missed this thread... so many good recs in the years since i last posted. been particularly enjoying the gr8080 playlists and of course the test pressing stay home and chill ones too <3

this is mentioned in the tp 2020 round up but super vibing on everything i've heard from pellegrino & zodyaco:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s3Hu0LwxgVg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHmyXJs9yFw

the label that put that out, early sounds, was also involved in the napoli segreta comps - those are also amazing and may or may not have already been mentioned itt but definitely worth checking out

a friend recently tipped me off to this older gem, you all might enjoy it too:

Thanks for the recs

This was linked a few weeks back in her own thread but posting it here as Charlotte Adigery's playlist on Spotify of the stuff she plays on her Studio Brussel show is an absolute treasure trove of Balearic classics, techno bangers, ambient, dub, disco, reggae, hip-hop, post-punk, pop, soul, jazz and just about everything in-between

Great new mix from Lexx via Danny Mclewin

Next up in our Idle Cellars mix series we are delighted to have the legendary Lexx deliver an exquisite selection of soft rock, soul jazz and smoky folk gems that truly only he can, with such effortless ease. Known for some of the most exquisite mixes for Test Pressing he’s delivered us a mix very much in the vein of those seminal Renaissance journeys. It is safe to say I am head over heels in love with this immaculate selection. Tune in and bliss out to this perfect Idle soundtrack

Sounds great! Thanks for the heads up.

Darn these international shipping rates. Oh well

Evan, Thursday, 20 May 2021 15:44 (three years ago) link

I got really really bored during a Teams call and ordered it without listening. Ummm listening now and it's... okay? Maybe a little too tidy and polite - like mid-period Nightmares On Wax or something. It's worth a listen though

Urbandn hope all ye who enter here (dog latin), Thursday, 20 May 2021 15:52 (three years ago) link

Yeah, definitely a stoned 90s downtempo breaks vibe in the Grand Central Records style, not in a bad way

Urbandn hope all ye who enter here (dog latin), Thursday, 20 May 2021 15:53 (three years ago) link

I didn't give it a formal listen (sampled some and then left it going from midpoint to the end) at low volume through laptop speakers, but what I heard of the 2nd half has been nice. Yes perhaps a bit sterile.

Evan, Thursday, 20 May 2021 15:56 (three years ago) link

It'll be good concentration music for when I'm working, whatevs. Not sure if there will be a standout track I'd put into a set.

Speaking of which, I've been invited to play a very short vinyl set to a sit-down crowd next week. I think it'll mostly be youngsters waiting for someone to play a bunch of acid and jungle. But figured I'd play a nice Balearic set seeing as my collection has been building up over lockdown. Not sure how it'll go down, but fuck em

Urbandn hope all ye who enter here (dog latin), Thursday, 20 May 2021 16:13 (three years ago) link

youngsters are into acid and jungle? I'm really out of the loop

Mr. Cacciatore (Moodles), Thursday, 20 May 2021 16:17 (three years ago) link

Drum n Bass seems to be having a resurgence amongst the youth but yeah, jungle never went away in Bristol. People never seem to tire of it

Urbandn hope all ye who enter here (dog latin), Thursday, 20 May 2021 17:35 (three years ago) link

I'm clearly living in the wrong part of the world, I'm not sure if jungle or DnB ever even existed in Texas

Mr. Cacciatore (Moodles), Thursday, 20 May 2021 17:40 (three years ago) link

Yeah, I always wonder whether there's some club around Boston that plays like jungle or balearic stuff, or really any cool club music. Haven't heard of one yet. Outside of like New York, I wonder how rare this sort of thing really is in the US.

OneSecondBefore, Friday, 21 May 2021 03:00 (three years ago) link

RIP Axis

Mr. Cacciatore (Moodles), Friday, 21 May 2021 03:05 (three years ago) link

Yeah, they closed before I moved here. Bums me out, that would have been right up my alley!

OneSecondBefore, Friday, 21 May 2021 12:53 (three years ago) link

I know they've probably been shut down by the pandemic but does The Phoenix Landing still have DJs? That was another that I went to a lot.

Mr. Cacciatore (Moodles), Friday, 21 May 2021 13:19 (three years ago) link

I've actually never been, but their website still talks about local DJs, so hopefully they'll be able to resume those kinds of events soon. Thanks for the tip, I'll check it out!

OneSecondBefore, Friday, 21 May 2021 14:42 (three years ago) link

it's been over 20 years since I was last there, but back in the 90s they brought in a surprisingly solid string of DJs

Mr. Cacciatore (Moodles), Friday, 21 May 2021 15:31 (three years ago) link

i came to this comp for the version of "food of love" and it turns out the whole thing is pretty excellent
